The Relationship Between Non-Native English Speakers' English Proficiency And Their Callings In The Lds Church In The United States, Dena Marie Wright Erickson
The Relationship Between Non-Native English Speakers' English Proficiency And Their Callings In The Lds Church In The United States, Dena Marie Wright Erickson
Theses and Dissertations
As part of BYU's Distance Learning Project to teach English for gospel purposes, a committee created a survey to assess the English needs of LDS non-native English speakers in native-language units in the United States. This thesis uses several sections of the survey to correlate proficiency, callings in the Church, and demographic information. In addition to survey data, this thesis uses qualitative information from focus groups, and interviews to illustrate the statistical findings. The theory underlying this research is that learning precedes involvement in a community. Although learning in the LDS Church community is multi-faceted, this study examines the learning …

Insoluble Ambiguity: Criticism And The Structure Of The Frame Narrative In The Turn Of The Screw By Henry James, Cecilia Rosenow
Insoluble Ambiguity: Criticism And The Structure Of The Frame Narrative In The Turn Of The Screw By Henry James, Cecilia Rosenow
Dissertations and Theses
Since its publication in 1898, The Turn of the Screw has been the focus of diverse critical interpretation. It has reflected shifts in critical theory that include the Freudian, psychoanalytic, mythological, structuralist, reader-response, linguistic, and new-historical schools.
The majority of critical interpretations have focused on the governess's narrative and have excluded the prologue, or frame narrative, that begins the novella. The critics who did examine the prologue overlooked James's departure from the traditional use of frame narration and the importance of the structure of the frame in creating a text of insoluble ambiguity.
James departed from traditional frame narration in …

Publications and Research
In her article" New Directions for Black Feminist Criticism," Deborah McDowell notes the" lack of precision and detail" that has marked Black feminist scholarship and theories. She posits what she sees as one essential for a more precise and complete definition: like feminist criticism in general, Black feminist theory can be seen as" a'corrective, unmasking the omissions and distortions of the past—the errors of a literary critical tradition that arise from and reflect a culture created, perpetuated, and dominated by men'"(186).

Placing The Places In Wordsworth's 1802 Sonnets, Stephen C. Behrendt
Placing The Places In Wordsworth's 1802 Sonnets, Stephen C. Behrendt
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Wordsworth's political sonnets of summer and fall 1802 recount the sights and sounds the poet encountered during the brief respite provided by the Peace of Amiens, which enabled him to return to France and to the woman and child who were the physical reminders of the time he had spent there ten years earlier in the spirited days following the French Revolution. Published together in 1807 in Poems, in Two Volumes, they juxtapose the dispirited and pathetic state of France in 1802 with the ebullience Wordsworth recalled from that earlier time. More important, the sequence documents his "return" to England, …

Anonymous Signatures, Circulating Libraries, Conventionality, And The Production Of Gothic Romances, Edward Jacobs
Anonymous Signatures, Circulating Libraries, Conventionality, And The Production Of Gothic Romances, Edward Jacobs
English Faculty Publications
Ever since circulating libraries first became commercially successful during the second half of the eighteenth century, social and literary critics have analyzed them primarily as institutions for distributing books. The dominant view has been that circulating libraries vulgarized literature, by pandering fiction to women, servants, and other people who had previously been excluded from reading by the high cost of books or by illiteracy. For instance, near the end of The Rise of the Novel, Ian Watt argues, as many eighteenth-century critics did, that during the last quarter of the eighteenth century "the pressures toward literary degradation which were …
