The Difficulty Of Translation Of Set Phrases And Idioms In English, Guzal Usmonova
The Difficulty Of Translation Of Set Phrases And Idioms In English, Guzal Usmonova
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
In this article we will discuss the difficulty of translation of set phrases and idioms in English and useful aspects of using them in oral speech. Generally speaking, the more difficult an expression is to understand and the less sense it makes in a given context, the more likely a translator will recognize it as an idiom.
Because they do not make sense if interpreted literally, the highlighted expressions in the following text are easy to recognize as idioms assuming one is not already familiar with them. Provided a translator has access to good reference works and monolingual dictionaries of …

Use Of Vague Language Elements In Spoken Discourse, Dilfuza Tursunova
Use Of Vague Language Elements In Spoken Discourse, Dilfuza Tursunova
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
Vague language exists in almost every culture and it denotes vague items, for example vague clauses, general extenders, general verbs, and general nouns, as well as vague modifiers such as, epistemic vague stance markers and vague quantifiers. Vague language in other words denotes phrases and words that are neither exact nor precise. This paper analyses the various definitions and theories of vague language and examines its use in the English language, in spoken discourse. There are some examples are provided in English context with Russian and Uzbek translations. It examines the ways in which vague language is used to convey …
Alchemical Word-Magic In 'The Winter’S Tale', Rana Banna
Alchemical Word-Magic In 'The Winter’S Tale', Rana Banna
Accessus
Within alchemical writing there is both a religious and scientific register in simultaneous coexistence. The linguistic symbols of alchemy are themselves to be understood as chemical matter embedded in the world by divine providence: a principle manifest in the doctrine of signatures. The natural world offers a complex but ultimately resolvable hermeneutic challenge to the natural scientist, whose job it becomes to be a reader of the book of nature wherein the Creator has inscribed a legible, if often allusive, meaning and purpose. This paper will proceed to explore how early modern alchemical-thinking impacted attitudes towards language and meaning …
John Gower's Magical Rhetoric, Georgiana Donavin
John Gower's Magical Rhetoric, Georgiana Donavin
Accessus
In Book 6 of the Confessio Amantis, telling the “Tale of Ulysses and Telegonus,” John Gower says of the former, “He was a gret rethorien / He was a gret magicien,” thereby capturing deep connections between rhetoric and magic. The seriously flawed necromancers of Book 6 exemplify only negative connections, however. Ulysses, by embracing verbal trickery and deploying his knowledge of the liberal arts for inferior aims, fails as both hero and speaker. Worse than Ulysses is Nectanabus, whose deceitful “carectes” seem to serve as a critique against spoken enchantments. Later in Book 7, however, Gower recuperates a concept …
The Effectiveness Of Cooperative Learning In Enhancing Students’ Vocabulary For Speaking, Ong Si Juan
The Effectiveness Of Cooperative Learning In Enhancing Students’ Vocabulary For Speaking, Ong Si Juan
Student Works (2020-2029)
Traditionally, English classes in Malaysian schools are rather teacher-centred and this method tends to impede students’ speaking skills. Coupled with the lack of vocabulary, it exacerbates their difficulty in using appropriate expressions in their speaking skills. Attempting to address these problems, the researcher used the Cooperative Learning (CL) method in her study because research has shown that it benefits greatly from the social interaction between students and improves the students' speaking skills, as its structured interaction design facilitates the accomplishment of group goals. This study examined the effectiveness of the CL framework in elevating L2 students’ vocabulary knowledge which consequently …

Translations As Representations Of Cultural Bias, Sarah Theimer
Translations As Representations Of Cultural Bias, Sarah Theimer
Faculty Publications
A presentation at the American Library Association's Midwinter Conference this presentation discusses how translations are not simply the movement of a resource from the source language to the target language. Transitioning a work into another language necessarily carries with it the bias of the target culture. Bias is demonstrated in different ways. Publishers decide what should and should not get published. Translators decide what should get included in the text to be meet the expectations of the source culture. Translations are often are incompletely described in library catalogs, which further inhibit the users' ability to make an informed choice.

Chapter 13: Preparing Graduate Students And Contingent Faculty For Online Writing Instruction: A Responsive And Strategic Approach To Designing Professional Development Opportunities, N. Claire Jackson, Andrea R. Olinger
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This chapter describes a responsive and strategic approach to the development of an asynchronous online mini-course in online writing instruction (OWI) for both graduate TAs and contingent faculty in the University of Louisville’s Composition Program. Demonstrating the importance of responding to local contexts, the authors reflect on the conditions shaping their own course design and, based on their experience, provide suggestions for WPAs who are in similar positions. This reflection is organized around seven key questions for WPAs to consider as they design their own professional development in OWI.

The Roles And Functions Of Metaphors In The Malaysian Education Blueprint, Linggatharani Kesavan
The Roles And Functions Of Metaphors In The Malaysian Education Blueprint, Linggatharani Kesavan
Student Works (2020-2029)
Abstract: The Malaysian Education Blueprint (2013 - 2025) seeks to revamp the entire education system in Malaysia, targeting institutions of learning and the stakeholders via a series of radical changes in policy and governance. Upon scrutiny, it was also found to contain several metaphors that are carefully constructed and layered to deliver the contents to the readers. Metaphors have been identified as an effective linguistic tool that can be used to achieve cognitive, semantic and pragmatic goals effectively. More importantly, they are also found to create or alter realities and evoke powerful emotions. This research applies the Conceptual Metaphor Theory …
Broken Harts: Mourning The Human/Animal Divide In Shakespeare’S As You Like It And Wordsworth’S “Hart-Leap Well”, Jennifer Jourlait
Broken Harts: Mourning The Human/Animal Divide In Shakespeare’S As You Like It And Wordsworth’S “Hart-Leap Well”, Jennifer Jourlait
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis compares the deer scenes in Shakespeare’s As You Like It and Wordsworth’s “Hart-Leap Well.” Both raise questions about man’s right to hunt animals with impunity. Shakespeare’s Jaques superficially takes up the issue of animal rights whereas Wordsworth’s personification of the stag evokes the reader’s sympathy for the animal.

The Orient In The Empire’S Poetry: Scholarship, Translation, And Imaginative Geography (1770-1857), Zeeshan Riyaz Reshamwala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation uses the idea of imaginative geography to study literary and scholarly representations of what writers in Europe referred to as the Orient during the long nineteenth century. Imaginative geography refers to a subjective collection of associations that accumulate around a place about which positive knowledge is limited, such that the imaginative associations overpower and structure any empirical knowledge about it, even when further knowledge is acquired. The imaginative geography of the Orient emerged from texts, images, and artifacts that traveled from Asia to Europe through sustained colonial contact. This dissertation studies how writers in India and Britain constituted, …

(Re)Defining Writing Instruction: Implementing An Anti-Racist Approach To Writing Instruction And Assessment In The Secondary English Classroom, Emily Wisniewski
(Re)Defining Writing Instruction: Implementing An Anti-Racist Approach To Writing Instruction And Assessment In The Secondary English Classroom, Emily Wisniewski
West Chester University Master’s Theses
The traditional writing workshop model and assessment practices commonly used in secondary classrooms are systematically racist and harmful to the development of young writers. To counter the damaging effects of racially discriminatory practices in secondary writing classrooms, educators must review and redefine their pedagogical approaches to create a safe, anti-racist environment for all students. By centering the scholarship of Felicia Rose Chavez and Asao Inoue, this thesis establishes a model of anti-racist pedagogy in the secondary classroom to help educators dismantle white supremacy in writing instruction and assessment so that students are empowered to find their voices without the fear …
Acquisition Of The Spanish Preterite And Imperfect By Non-Native Students In A Traditional Classroom Vs. A Hybrid Setting, Erin Christine Paulli Weldon
Acquisition Of The Spanish Preterite And Imperfect By Non-Native Students In A Traditional Classroom Vs. A Hybrid Setting, Erin Christine Paulli Weldon
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
High school students learning Spanish often struggle with the acquisition of the past tense. Spanish requires differentiation between aspects (preterite and imperfect) of the past tense; a linguistic contrast that does not exist in English. While this has been researched for years in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), the increasing availability of technology offers a new angle from which to explore students’ ability to master this concept. In the 2020-2021 school year, the presence of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) forced schools to overhaul and adapt the learning environment during a pandemic in which a fully traditional in-person model was not a …
Beyond Realism: Reading The Ongoing Wounds Of Enslavement In Beloved And Kindred, Stephanie Fawell
Beyond Realism: Reading The Ongoing Wounds Of Enslavement In Beloved And Kindred, Stephanie Fawell
Honors Theses
In an introductory chapter, I synthesize a genealogy of African Diasporic thinkers that challenge traditionally conceptualized bounds of realism and modernism both aesthetically and intellectually. In the chapters that follow, I look closely at Morrison’s Beloved and Butler’s Kindred, as well as the scholarly discussions surrounding the elements in these novels that stretch the bounds of conventionally defined realism. In both novels the linearity of time and concreteness of space is challenged: in Beloved, the ghost of Sethe’s child continues to haunt her family after her death and then physically manifests as Beloved, crossing a mysterious bridge between …
