The Classical Background As A Factor In The Spiritual Development Of Walter Pater’S ‘Marius The Epicurean’, Margaret Harris

A study of Walter Pater's work reveals the fact that from childhood he was actuated by an instinctive love of beauty apprehended through the senses and by an innate seriousness bordering almost on melancholy.

The Oberammergau Passion Play As A Survival Of The Medieval Miracle Play, Carolyn Pulciver Timm Jan 1934

The Oberammergau Passion Play As A Survival Of The Medieval Miracle Play, Carolyn Pulciver Timm

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The contributions of the Mediaeval Miracle Play to that of the Passion Play of Oberammergau are like those of a parent to a child. Life and form have been inherited but the development has gone far beyond the origin. Yet certain elements have continually been preserved in this same form and life

The material for the story of the Oberammergau Play was in the Mediaeval Miracle Play. In both cases the dramatic climax was reached on Good Friday with the gospel of our Lord's death upon the cross. Christ's entry into Jerusalem, the story of His birth, His active career, …

The Treatment Of Nature In The Poetry Of Coleridge, Esther S. Brenton Jan 1934

The Treatment Of Nature In The Poetry Of Coleridge, Esther S. Brenton

Graduate Thesis Collection

The treatment of nature by the English Romantic poets of the nineteenth century is commonly thought to be confined to the poetry of Wordsworth. Although the bulk of Wordsworth's poetry is concerned with nature, a study of the poetry of the period reveals that the other great Romanticists were also interested in nature. This thesis is written to show how great a factor the treatment of nature is in the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

A Comparison Of The Fables Of La Fontaine With The Fables Of Aesop, Mary Louise Dougherty Aug 1933

A Comparison Of The Fables Of La Fontaine With The Fables Of Aesop, Mary Louise Dougherty

Bachelors’ Theses

In this Thesis, La Fontaine and Aesop will be studied and compared by means of those works of theirs which are, perhaps, the best remembered: The Fables.

La Fontaine's and Aesop's Fables are well known for the moral inculcated in each. They have always in mind one purpose ... to teach the reader. La Fontaine used many of the Fables of Aesop as a background for his own Fables. Those of Aesop possessed no graces of style, and so La Fontaine added graces of style to those he wrote.

The Oriental Theatre, Marylouise Hempstead May 1933

The Oriental Theatre, Marylouise Hempstead

Bachelors’ Theses

Most students of drama would never consider the oriental drama of much consequence to the development of occidental drama and literature. Yet out of the east rises the mother of all drama, the ritualistic dance. Although this thesis s. in no wise a complete treatment of oriental drama and its theatre for that would take yea.rs of research, however, it presents a brief development of the drama of India, China, Japan and Java, the outstanding asiatic countries. The treatment of the mythical and legendary origins or acted drama up to the modern legitimate stage took over 3,000 years if not …

In this thesis my problem is to compare the philosophy of Seneca and the philosophy of Bacon. Signs, Omens, And Portents In Nebraska Folklore, Margaret Cannell Jan 1933

Signs, Omens, And Portents In Nebraska Folklore, Margaret Cannell

University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism

The signs, omens, and portents in the following collection have been reported by inhabitants of Nebraska and most of them are beliefs or sayings commonly known in the central western region. Although the list must be far from complete, it is probably representative of the bulk of current superstitions of Nebraskans. Informants have been persons from practically every part of the state, so that the beliefs presented are not limited to any particular region. No attempt has been made to indicate from what community the different signs were reported, since a sign which may be common in the Sand Hills …

Proverbial Lore In Nebraska, Emma Louise Snapp Jan 1933

Proverbial Lore In Nebraska, Emma Louise Snapp

University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism

The following study attempts to list and to classify the proverbs and proverbial phrases in current oral use in Nebraska. My chief source for the collection was the talk of persons with whom I have been in contact for the last six months. The amount of proverbial lore on the lips of representatives of many walks of life is astonishing; one can have no conception of its extent until he consciously listens for it and keeps a record of what he hears. Further, friends in Lincoln and in other parts of the state gathered and sent to me many lists …

Critical And Literary Principles Of Alexander Pope, Mary Robertine Welsh Jan 1933

Critical And Literary Principles Of Alexander Pope, Mary Robertine Welsh

Bachelors’ Theses

It is the purpose of this thesis to attempt to show how Alexander Pope through his critical and literary principles put new life and vigor into English verse. He may not be a poet of the first order, as some of his critics would have us believe, but he undoubtedly was exactly the poet his age required. That age needed discipline as a restorative after the anarchy of the previous century, that Pope succeeded in bringing order out of well-nigh chaos even hie enemies concede.

An Evaluation Of The Place Occupied By The Greek Pastoral Elegy From Its Earliest Appearance To The Present, Alfred Carney Jan 1933

An Evaluation Of The Place Occupied By The Greek Pastoral Elegy From Its Earliest Appearance To The Present, Alfred Carney

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

To the student versed in the classics the influence of Greek and Latin pastoral poetry on English Literature is well known. Starting at the time of the Italian Renaissance and encouraged by the Greek Revival several centuries later, the classical influence has permeated our literature more than any other factor. During the time of the Renaissance pastoral poetry had a place of importance equal to that of the equip and the drama. The sweet melodies of Greek rural life reechoed in the eclogues of Vergil had such a charm for later poets that they could not be resisted. Pastoral poetry …

A Thesis On Shakespeare, Literature's Master Dramatist, Hilda Mary Armstrong Jul 1932

A Thesis On Shakespeare, Literature's Master Dramatist, Hilda Mary Armstrong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, presents a survey of the life and dramatic works of William Shakespeare, situated within the broader history of English drama. The thesis traces English drama's origins in medieval Catholic Church miracle plays and moralities through the development of Bible drama, interludes, and early English comedy and tragedy, before turning to the Elizabethan stage on which Shakespeare wrote.

A biographical account of Shakespeare's life at Stratford-on-Avon and London is followed by a description of the physical conditions of the Elizabethan theatre, including stage construction, scenery, …

Goethe And Beethoven By Roman Rolland, Lillian S. Thekan Jun 1932

Goethe And Beethoven By Roman Rolland, Lillian S. Thekan

Bachelors’ Theses

Goethe, the great poet and Beethoven, the likewise great musician had known each other for a long time, but only from a distant. Beethoven, no doubt, had the greatest comprehension of the two. From his infancy he nourished himself with the works of Goethe. He read his works every day and finally Goethe occupied the place of Klopstock in his heart. Beethoven remarks, "Klopstock always wished to die and this happened very soon. Goethe, on the other hand, lived and we all must live with him. This is the reason that his works can be so easily set to music."

Comparison Of The Gods And Goddesses Of The Iliad And The Aenid, Viola G. Strunk May 1932

Comparison Of The Gods And Goddesses Of The Iliad And The Aenid, Viola G. Strunk

Bachelors’ Theses

Anyone who studies classical literature must have a knowledge of mythology. Without this it is almost impossible to read and understand the ancient Greek and Latin authors. Many books have been written on the mythology of the ancients, but in my research work I have never found one that has been entirely devoted to a comparison of the mythology of the Iliad and the Aeneid. It is to offset this that I have undertaken to write this thesis. To claim, though, that this is the only work of its kind would be presumptuous. In this thesis, I have used as …

A Comparison Of Gaius Valerius Catullus And Robert Herrick, Mary Jeanne Bizjak May 1932

A Comparison Of Gaius Valerius Catullus And Robert Herrick, Mary Jeanne Bizjak

Bachelors’ Theses

In writing this thesis my object has been to compare the poetry of Catullus with that of Herrick. I have tried to bring out the influence of Catullus upon Herrick. I have also tried to make a critical study of each poet's works, and to bring out the similarity of their poetry. It was necessary to read all the poems of Catullus with the aid of the translation by F. W. Cornish, and to read the complete poems of Herrick.

The Dramatic Monologues Of Robert Browning, Vernon H. Erbstoeszer Jan 1932

The Dramatic Monologues Of Robert Browning, Vernon H. Erbstoeszer

Bachelors’ Theses

It shall be the purpose of this work so to study the Dramatic Monologues of Robert Browning that a true understanding and a sound evaluation of their significance may be obtained. To this end there are treated hereinafter such groups of monologues, and such individual poems in each group, as are sufficient to suggest Browning's range of subject matter, to hint at his high ideals, to show his unusual knowledge of and interest in mu.sic, art, and obscure history, and finally,to demonstrate thereby the worth of the Dramatic Monologue. Because of obvious impossibility, and for the sake of avoiding repetition, …

The Use Of Classical Mythology In Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene Book I And Ii, Laura E. Rupp Jan 1932

The Use Of Classical Mythology In Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene Book I And Ii, Laura E. Rupp

Graduate Thesis Collection

For the proper understanding of this thesis, it is necessary to state explicitly what it does not attempt to do. It is absolutely not an examination into the sources of Spenser's classical mythology. That research work has already been done in two published studies; namely, The Sources of Spenser's Classical Mythology by A. E. Sawtelle and a second work with the same title by A. S. Randall. The connection of Virgil and Spenser has been treated by M. G. Hughes in Virgil and Spenser.

English Character-Writers And Their Relation To The Essay, Lu Verne A. Kloeckner Jun 1931

English Character-Writers And Their Relation To The Essay, Lu Verne A. Kloeckner

Bachelors’ Theses

Literary critics have for the most part passed over the Character-writers. They have made the history of the essay consist in a mere evaluation of the relative merits of the Essais of Montaigne; the periodical essays of Addison, Steele and others; the familiar essay of Lamb; and the more or less formal essays of Bacon and Carlyle; not to mention a host of other classical essayists like Newman, Ruskin, De Quincey, and Hazlitt. Besides these we have our modern essayists, among whom are Belloc, Morley, and Chesterton, chronicled in almost every History or Criticism. Not only do we find them …

Evolution And Development Of The Sentimental Comedy, Mary Mina May 1931

Evolution And Development Of The Sentimental Comedy, Mary Mina

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer has purposed in this essay to trace the rise, development, arid evolution of the comedy. of sensibility, from about the year 1700 to 1177. The movement was one, intricated with not a few interwoven trends. The fusion of sentimentalism into the comedy through social, moral, philosophic, literary, and historical factors has, in part, accounted for the intricacy of the genre, known as the comedy of sensibility. Few authors have considered it worth while to devote much time to the amassed dramatic productions of the eighteenth century. Thus, the complexity ·of the problem is increased.

Predecessors Of Scott In The Historical Novel, H. W. Mcdougal May 1931

Predecessors Of Scott In The Historical Novel, H. W. Mcdougal

Bachelors’ Theses

When Sir Walter Scott gave life and being to the historical novel , his was by no means the first attempt.

There existed a mass of material and subject matter popularized and used by the terror-romanticists, the creators of the Gothic romance. That Scott was influenced by the writings of his predecessors in the romantic novel and that he embodied in his writings to a great extent the elements that were essential to the Gothic arose romance, that the same basic spirit that created the romance of terror lives on in his novels, perfected and modulated though it be, it …
