Irving Babbitt As Critic And Humanist, C. Carroll Hollis Jun 1936

Irving Babbitt As Critic And Humanist, C. Carroll Hollis

Bachelors’ Theses

To become legendary while living is, generally speaking, unfortunate. Such as Irving Babbitt's lot. Probably his death will gradually evoke a legend of a more accurate and objective kind. He was by many regarded as a conscientious pedant, and was never what might be called "popular". It must be admitted that his gift was of a nature that has always made for unpopularity.

Friedrich Wilhelm Koenig: A Study In Biography And Background Based On Documentary Evidence And Family Tradition, Paul King May 1936

Friedrich Wilhelm Koenig: A Study In Biography And Background Based On Documentary Evidence And Family Tradition, Paul King

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

It was my first intention to write a biography of my grandfather. This was to be an entirely creative piece of work, based on his Army discharge, an account of his death and burial in the local paper, and the traditions of the family. Because his life after 1875-when he left the 5th Cavalry was so closely connected with the history of Hays, the biography was to stop short, twenty-three years before his death. Hays City from 1875 to 1898, the people, the colorful English colonists east in Victoria, the Russian-Germans, the change of troops at the fort, the fort …

A Study Of Byron's Oriental Tales, Winifred H. Kexel May 1936

A Study Of Byron's Oriental Tales, Winifred H. Kexel

Bachelors’ Theses

While numerous editions of the poems of Lord. Byron, biographies of him, and his letters and journals are available, there has been little mention made of that portion of his poetry known as ’The Oriental Tales.’ It seems rather strange that this has been neglected, coming as it did at one of the critical periods of his life, and being, in itself, a series of very fine narratives.

Typical Women Characters In Three Of Gerhart Hauptmann's Naturalistic Dramas, Florence Cohen May 1936

Typical Women Characters In Three Of Gerhart Hauptmann's Naturalistic Dramas, Florence Cohen

Bachelors’ Theses

Innumerable papers dealing with various phases of Hauptmann's works have been written. Many, if not, all of them emphasize the story of his Dramas, the construction from the standpoint of naturalism, etc. Few, if any, however, have stressed Hauptmann as a character delineator, nor have they emphasized his treatment of the women. It is for this reason that the writer wishes to discuss three of Hauptmann 's Naturalistic Social Dramas emphasizing the treatment of the women with special regard to heredity and environment.

The purpose of this thesis is to discover the relationship of Oliver Goldsmith to the sentimental movement in progress in the England of his time. The author has endeavored to present a clear picture of the times with reference to the theatres, the type of audiences, and popular tastes. In a general way the writer has gone into the period before Goldsmith, which is known as the period of the Restoration and before that into the age of Puritanism. Under the heading of Restoration Drama is included a discussion of the Comedy of Manners and its chief adherents, Etherege, Wycherly, …

The Kentucky Novels Of James Lane Allen, Hessie Brister Ivey Aug 1935

The Kentucky Novels Of James Lane Allen, Hessie Brister Ivey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Kentucky, following in the footsteps of her parent state, Virginia, has given to America some of her most distinguished statesmen. She gave to the Confederacy its only president, Jefferson Davis, and to the Federal Union its war president, Abraham Lincoln. Housed in a noble pile of imperishable granite, on its exact original site, near Hodgenville, the humble log cabin in which Lincoln was born is now preserved as a national shrine. At Fairview a towering obelisk marks the birthplace of Jefferson Davis.

These two statesmen were born, one year between them, of the same pioneering stock. One moved north of …

The Significance Of The Influence Of The American One-Act Play On The Little Theatre, John H. Hennessey May 1935

The Significance Of The Influence Of The American One-Act Play On The Little Theatre, John H. Hennessey

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis shall not be t.o prove, that the American one-act play is the only possible type of drama that has a tendency toward a national drama, but rather to bring to light that the American one-act play, through the influence, which it exerted on the Little Theatre, is the driving force, which strives toward this national dramatic movement. That there is a laxity of and a need for a folk drama and folk-theatre is taken as an indisputable fact.

The one-act playwrights and their one-act plays are discussed, not from the aspect of a criticism of …

Nebraska Folk Cures, Pauline Monette Black Jan 1935

Nebraska Folk Cures, Pauline Monette Black

University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism

Folk cures form a conspicuous part of Nebraska lore. Nebraska pioneers from many states and many countries brought with them certain remedies which they believed particularly efficacious, and which became a tradition in families or communities throughout the state. The cures in the following collection have come directly from the residents of the state and are not limited to any specific locality. They have been recorded as nearly as possible just as the informants gave them. Some alterations have been made in diction and sentence structure to clarify ambiguity. The collection is doubtless incomplete, but it lists, I believe, most …

Life And Works Of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Lorraine T. Pallanch Jan 1935

Life And Works Of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Lorraine T. Pallanch

Bachelors’ Theses

In this treatise I have attempted to make a study of the life and works of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward. The only material available to me was her autobiography and her numerous works. Since I have been unable to find any critical material other than brief comments published in periodicals at the time of her death, I have discussed rather than criticized her works for the most part.

The Study Of Browning's Paracelsus And Its Historical Background, Mary Jane Crangle Jan 1935

The Study Of Browning's Paracelsus And Its Historical Background, Mary Jane Crangle

Bachelors’ Theses

In this treatise I have attempted careful study of Browning's poem Paracelsus. The primary object was to relate the historical life of Paracelsus and to show how correctly it correlated with Browning's poem. Secondly, I sought to analyze the character of Paracelsus as he appeared in his own background and environment, and to state the reasons wherefore Browning used him as the hero of his poem. Lastly, I have tried to outline the various points of philosophy found in the poet's spiritual interpretation of the man, which are universal because they are the eternal questions of mankind today, re-echoing …

The Treatment Of Sir Gawain In English Literature From Geoffrey Of Monmouth To The Twentieth Century, Bertha C. Cook Jan 1935

The Treatment Of Sir Gawain In English Literature From Geoffrey Of Monmouth To The Twentieth Century, Bertha C. Cook

Graduate Thesis Collection

One of the greatest sources for literary productions during the Middle Ages was the material which dealt with King Arthur and his followers. These heroes were very popular, and the fame of their exploits was wide spread. As early as the eleventh century, the Arthurian stories were current in Italy, and some of the episodes were carved in a cathedral in Modena in the early twelfth century. Many romances filled with the adventures of the knights were written in France, and some of the heroes were popular in Germany.

The Formation Of Folk Literature As Illustrated In Mother Goose, Milo H. Stuart

Graduate Thesis Collection

The following thesis really began some fifteen years ago, when our children were little. Repeating Mother Goose Rhymes to them over and over again, a great curiosity overcame me to know whence these rhymes came and what they mean. It was only natural to read everything available to me on the subject.

The Influence Of Cyrano De Bergerac's "Voyages To The Sun And The Moon" On Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels", Nancy Crampton

Graduate Thesis Collection

It has been claimed by the French that Cyrano de Bergerac was the source for Jonathan Swift's GULLIVER'S TRAVELS. In the following paper an effort will be made to show the Englishman's indebtedness to the French writer, but in so doing it will be necessary to give some of the more indirect influences upon de Bergerac as well as upon Swift.

The American Short Story From 1865 To 1900, Wendel W. Crosby

Bachelors’ Theses

Toe purpose of this thesis is to trace the development of the .American short story from about 1865 to about 1900. I propose to do this by dividing the material studied into four periods and then to weigh, examine, and compare the chief exponents of the American short story during each period. The divisions are: The Period Following the Civil War, of which I shall consider the stories of Bret Hart, Aldrich, Twain and James; The Era of Localized Romance, of which the stories of Cable and Jewett will be considered; The Reign of Dialect, dominated by Murfree. Harris and …
