The Poetry Of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Geraldine Cox Jan 1938

The Poetry Of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Geraldine Cox

Bachelors’ Theses

The late Thomas Hardy once remarked that there were only two great things in the United States: what he called our "recessional buildings", and the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. Such praise of Miss Millay's work is proof that she has reached an enviable position in twentieth century literature. To our way of thinking such approbation from the late dean of modern novelists exceeds even the honor of winning the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1922 with the poem, The Ballad of the Harp-Weaver.

A Study Of The Graveyard School Of Poetry, Mary Teresa

Bachelors’ Theses

Interest in the death theme has been pronounced all through the ages because the subject is of such vital importance to man. Poets and writers have expended their best literary efforts in treating death in its every aspect. The purpose of this thesis is to study in particular, a certain group of poets commonly spoken of as The Graveyard School. Their poetry on death will be treated in such a way as to show the hopelessness and pessimism of the various writers.

The writings of Irving Babbitt have caused considerable comment in Catholic circles. First of all, because his criticism of the trends of thought developed by Rousseau in the nineteenth century is so nearly like their own.

English Didactic Verse Of The Eighteenth Century, Mary Bernard Byrnes

The Story Of A Pioneer Family : A Literary Study Of The Pioneer Life Of The Reverend And Mrs. C. E. Hirschler In Harvey And Hodgeman Counties, Kansas, And Nobles County In The Cherokee Strip, Oklahoma, Edward E. Hirschler

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part tells about the European homes of my parents and about their coming to Kansas. The second part is about their marriage and moving into Hodgeman County where they and other Mennonite families formed a Mennonite colony. Various pioneer experiences are recounted. The third part tells about the opening of the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma Territory and my parents moving to the Strip to take up pioneer life farther south. In this work I attempted to portray the pioneer life of my parents and show that their experiences were typical of …

The Attitude Toward Nature In Eighteenth Century English Poetry, Julien Pontier Apr 1937

The Attitude Toward Nature In Eighteenth Century English Poetry, Julien Pontier

Bachelors’ Theses

Philosophy tells us that many arguments and seeming differences of opinion may be avoided if the parties involved would simply define the terms of the question under discussion. It will, perhaps, be well then to follow this advice in the treatment of our subject which is Nature as it is found in eighteenth century English poetry. Just what terms then must be defined or made clear? Nature as it is expressed in poetry must be defined, but along with it must also be defined, if possible, the two rather ambiguous terms classicism and romanticism. What relationship, it may be asked, …

Thomas Moore The Poet, Mary Magdalene Steckel Mar 1937

Thomas Moore The Poet, Mary Magdalene Steckel

Bachelors’ Theses

Thomas Moore started writing at an early age. His parents were extremely interested in their son's education and consequently had sent him to school as soon as possible. At the excellent grammar school which he attended young Thomas was well-versed in the fundamentals of grammar and of writing besides being taught and reminded never to neglect the habit of rhyming. To these practices he was ever afterwards indebted and before his fifteenth birthday two of his lyrical verses were printed in a popular Dublin magazine.

A Discussion Of The Rogue Novel La Celestina With Special Reference To The Social Conditions Of The Time, Blanche Todes

Bachelors’ Theses

Because the picaresque novel is so intimately connected with the Spanish people, and so clearly expresses their spirit, I have always been extremely interested in this genre. Therefore, I have written on the Celestina because it is the forerunner of this genre and is one of the most worth while and important works in Spanish literature.

The Little Theatre Movement In Wisconsin, Austin Norbert Robert Rodeman Mar 1937

The Little Theatre Movement In Wisconsin, Austin Norbert Robert Rodeman

Bachelors’ Theses

The decline of the professional theatre in Wisconsin, and in this country as a whole, has brought with it the rise of what is known as the Little Theatre Movement. This decline of the professional theatre has been brought about by the distraction of modern life, the cost of railroad transportation as it affects traveling companies and especially the diversion of the masses to the motion pictures. With the decline of the commercial trouping companies, many cities found themselves without any spoken drama except the synthetic production, motion pictures, which to the genuine lover of the theatre is, in a …

The Revolutionary Philosophy Of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Jean H. Wood Jan 1937

The Revolutionary Philosophy Of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Jean H. Wood

Graduate Thesis Collection

In approaching the subject of Coleridge's Revolutionary Philosophy, one finds that the scope of the problem necessitates dividing it into different periods. This division is made not for the purpose of classifying Coleridge's ideals within set limitations, but of viewing his philosophy from varying perspectives. Throughout his life, regardless of age, he was a disciple of Liberty. His pursuit of this ideal furnishes the continuity that we seek throughout his political philosophy.

The Political Ideas In Colonial Literature, 1607-1800, Alberta J. Mckenna Sep 1936

The Political Ideas In Colonial Literature, 1607-1800, Alberta J. Mckenna

Bachelors’ Theses

Over three centuries ago at Jamestown, Virginia, a group of Englishmen settled and erected a few rude huts on the edge of the primeval forest. Here one must go to find the beginning of English occupancy in America, and since it proved to be a permanent occupancy one must of necessity find the early beginning of literature - American literature.
