The Use Of Obsessions And Delusions As A Tragic Device In The Major Plays Of Eugene O'Neill, Ruth Bartlett Thomas
The Use Of Obsessions And Delusions As A Tragic Device In The Major Plays Of Eugene O'Neill, Ruth Bartlett Thomas
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This introductory chapter contains definitions of obsessions and delusions, and examines the validity of these ideas as tragic devices. It discusses obsessions from the point of view of Freud and Jung.
The major plays of Eugene O’Neill have been divided into three psychological types: the first type we shall call the statement-of-the-problem plays; the second, the simple anima plays; the third, the complex anima plays. These terms and divisions will be explained as we proceed.

An Essay On Character Portrayal, Style, And Technique Of Writing In Maxwell Anderson's Biographical Plays In Verse, Henry E. Hobson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this chapter is to acquaint the reader with the general scope and trend of Maxwell Anderson's work in order to give a more complete conspectus for the discussion of his plays. By so doing a foundation will be laid for a more intelligible discussion of the specific aspects of the seven plays concerned in the thesis proper, the title of which is, "An Essay on Character Portrayal, Style, and Technique of' Writing in Maxwell Anderson's Biographical Plays in Verse."
There Were Thirteen: A Pioneer Novel Of Western Kansas, Gwen Lane Funston
There Were Thirteen: A Pioneer Novel Of Western Kansas, Gwen Lane Funston
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
In my thesis, I wish to present the story of my maternal grandmother as it is revealed in the lives of her thirteen children. I have been interested in the story since I can remember. My earliest memories are of sitting on Grandma’s lap and listening to tales of Indians on the warpath, of Kansas prairie sod houses and rattlesnakes, and of what my aunts, uncles, and my mother used to do when they were small. To avoid any possible embarrassment to living persons, I have fictionized the names of my characters. I have, however, retained all actual dates and …
Tom Plumb, A Novel, Gwendolyn Dimmitt
Tom Plumb, A Novel, Gwendolyn Dimmitt
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
This is a true story, as far as actual dates and the verification of the incidents is concerned. The writer has filled in the conversation and the human interest bits as it seemed the people of that day might have talked or acted. Mr. Plumb is a true character, and the story of his life is given according to the facts as the writer was able to find them. That Mr. Plumb was a typical, and yet individual character, is proved by the fact that one year before his death he was chosen by the Red Willow County, Nebraska, Pioneer …

The Importance, Influence, And Continuity Of Bronte Juvenilia In Reference To The Mature Works, Thelma Lucile Cooley
The Importance, Influence, And Continuity Of Bronte Juvenilia In Reference To The Mature Works, Thelma Lucile Cooley
Graduate Thesis Collection
It is the purpose of this thesis to discuss the Bronte juvenilia only in reference to the mature works and to make clear what influences and likenesses there are between the two, and what currents of continuity exist from the childhood writing through the adult accomplisbment. In such an inquiry Charlotte Bronte, of course, provides the richest reward. For only hers and Branwell's juvenile writings remain to us, and of these two only she wrote significantly with a mature purpose. But the search is barren in none of the four: in all--Charlotte and Branwell, Emily and Anne--the investigation becomes the …

The North American Indian As Presented In Early Chronicles, Edith Stephens Blessing
The North American Indian As Presented In Early Chronicles, Edith Stephens Blessing
English Language and Literature ETDs
The inhabitants of the newly discovered North American continent were of great interest to contemporary Europeans. What manner of creatures lived in this new land? Were they monsters? Were they men? A few Indians were brought back to Europe by Columbus, by Cartier, and by Smith, but these were seen by a limited number of the populace. The widespread impressions of the natives came, therefore, from the early writings, the chronicles, the reports, and the letters of the explorers and the first settlers. It is from these sources that the picture of the North American Indian was created for the …
Noel Coward's Contribution To The Comedy Of Manners., Clara-Marie Doughtry
Noel Coward's Contribution To The Comedy Of Manners., Clara-Marie Doughtry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An estimate of Noel Coward's contribution to the comedy of manners necessitates an understanding of: (1) the nature and the place of the comedy of manners in modern drama, (2) Noel Coward's background, and (3) an analysis of Noel Coward's formula for the comedy of manners. We find in the material relating to modern drama. little discussion of the comedy of manners. Occasionally plays may be mentioned as comedies of manners, but there is no discussion as to the specific nature of the comedy of manners in modern drama. The only book that discusses fully the comedy of manners in …

The Physician In Shakespeare And Jonson, Eleanor W. Kahn
Graduate Thesis Collection
The science of medicine is probably linked more closely to the daily life of man than any other science. The sheer necessity of healing brought forth first remedies, and whether the art of healing was practiced by the wise-woman, the priest, or the medicine man, the practitioners of this art were undoubtedly a very important factor in the lives of their contemporaries.

Aldous Huxley : A Study In A Changing Philosophy, Lee Quellen Charette
Aldous Huxley : A Study In A Changing Philosophy, Lee Quellen Charette
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
"Art," besides being art, "is also philosophy," Aldous Huxley says in Vulgarity in Literature. Throughout the years in which he has been writing, Huxley has never lost sight of this dictum. His philosophy has ever formed an integral part of all that he has produced, and especially has it been basic in his novels.
Because of the importance of philosophy to Huxley, the artist, I have aimed in this study at following the course of his changing philosophy. I have tried to present Huxley in his early years advocating a philosophy of meaninglessness and then, after becoming dissatisfied with such …
A Study Of The Interrelations Between Dos Passos' Personal Philosophy, Objectives, And Techniques And The Influence Of The Zeitgeist On Them, James R. Wilson
A Study Of The Interrelations Between Dos Passos' Personal Philosophy, Objectives, And Techniques And The Influence Of The Zeitgeist On Them, James R. Wilson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
For several reasons Dos Passos is important to the development of American literature. His novels, with their integrity, breadth, and architectonic form, are painted on a larger canvas than any other American writers. In Manhattan Transfer, his fourth novel, he attempted to portray the greatest metropolis in the world, New York City. He succeeded as well as anyone ever has. Then, refusing to rest on his cars, he went on to the trilogy U. S. A., which takes all of twentieth century American life as its subject. This is Dos Passos' epic of modern Americanlife, the most successful of the …

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The purpose and method of the study have been to find and read the novels of the period in order that some judgment might be formed concerning the use of Kansas and other materials and the worth of the contributions discovered both in relation to each other and in relation to the literature of the nation as a whole.
