Properties Of Radar Augmentation For Missile Targets., Warren T. Randall

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This thesis presents a study made to investigate problems involved in the design of certain radar augmentation devices. The task arose from the requirement to add realistic simulation of radar reflection characteristics to drone targets during an evaluation of the performance capability of the Falcon missile, conducted by Hughes Aircraft Company at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico. In addition to performing a mathematical analysis of the problem, the author who asked to design and build equipment which would present a visual demonstration of the reflection activities. The necessary definition of radar properties and a description of the test equipment …

The Performance Of Beams And Columns Continuously Braced With Diaphragms, George Pincus, Gordon P. Fisher Feb 1963

The Performance Of Beams And Columns Continuously Braced With Diaphragms, George Pincus, Gordon P. Fisher

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION In Progress Report No.1, it was reported that the initial conception of the problem was that diaphragms act almost exclusively in shear when called upon to brace compression members, and that it had been decided to test single columns with finite widths of diaphragm attached, with width of the sheet being varied to provide a range of lateral support up to that which permitted full column strength, based on strong axis to be developed. However, the first test of this kind, Test CB-l, clearly indicated that the diaphragm acted essentially in flexure only and thus had the same effect …

Some Effects Of Fabrication Practices On The Strength Characteristics Of Reinforced Concrete Culvert Pipe, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens Feb 1963

Some Effects Of Fabrication Practices On The Strength Characteristics Of Reinforced Concrete Culvert Pipe, Robert C. Deen, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Underground conduits have been used for hundreds of years for drainage and water supply purposes. With the advent of railway and auto-mobile transportation, the use of underground conduits for drainage purposes beneath the roadways increased greatly. It soon became apparent that there was a definite need for knowledge concerning the manufacture, installation, and field behavior of pipe culverts. Accordingly, in the first half of the century, much attention and research has been directed toward the development and establishment of acceptable techniques and specifications fot the manufacture and installation of pipe culverts. This work has been accomplished by many individuals and …

Concrete, Bridge Decks: Deterioration, Coatings And Repairs, James H. Havens, William B. Drake Feb 1963

Concrete, Bridge Decks: Deterioration, Coatings And Repairs, James H. Havens, William B. Drake

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report is not wholly a culmination of a planned or programmed research project. It is a historical account of damage sustained by both new and old concrete bridge-decks -- through freeze-thaw, salt action, etc, -- and of some expedient repairs which have been effected. The problem of durability in concrete bridge-decks has become increasingly critical during the past ten years or so and is now a major concern to highway engineers throughout the northern tier of states. While there is not yet a concerted agreement in regard to the cause of the trouble, relief is being sought through improved …

Swing Fence Flood Crossing For Creeks In The Kimberleys, A L. Payne Jan 1963

Swing Fence Flood Crossing For Creeks In The Kimberleys, A L. Payne

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FENCING is the basis of the regeneration programme on the eroded Ord River catchment area, and the fences constructed must cross numerous creeks.

But heavy downpours of short duration characterise the wet season experienced in this area.

Because the rain falls on to bare, compacted ground, run-off is intense and gullies and creeks rise rapidly, causing serious damage to conventional fences and flood gates across watercourses.

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the chemical oxidation of alkyl benzene sulfonates with potassium permanganate. ABS concentrations of 3, 5 and 10 mg/1, and potassium permanganate dosages of 0.5, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 20.0, 40.0 and 80.0 mg/1 were used. The study was made in deionized water at room temperature and a pH value of 8.5. A 5-hour detention period was provided. The ABS concentration, potassium permanganate concentration, foam volume and foam stability were the main parameters employed.

It was found that potassium permanganate significantly reduced the ABS concentration and foam volume. The rate of the oxidation …

A Time Optimum Bang Bang Control System Under Specified Inputs., John F. Curtin Jan 1963

A Time Optimum Bang Bang Control System Under Specified Inputs., John F. Curtin

Masters Theses

"The problem presented is a study, by simulation on an analog computer, of a time optimum "bang bang" control system with a second order plant. Phase plane analysis techniques are used to describe the performance of the second order plant under the action of a maximum effort controller. From this, the system logic is developed for time optimum response to a step reference input. A fast time model of the plant is used to obtain repeated high-speed extrapolations of the plant outputs, at the same time a linear predictor generates future values of the reference. The error functions thus found …

Liquid Mercury Embrittlement Of Thin-Walled 2024 Aluminum Tubes, Edward J. Beckemeyer

Masters Theses

"The dislocation theory, Zener-Stroh crack model, and the Petch relationship, which correlates fracture stress and grain size, were used to analyze the embrittlement of 2024 aluminum alloy tubes by liquid mercury.

Surface energy ratios, [formula], were determined for biaxial stress ratios of 1/2, 1, ∞. The values of the surface energy ratios considered were 4.24, 1.79, 1.46, respectively. As part of this study, an approximate Nabarro-Peierls frictional stress was calculated for each stress ratio"--Abstract, page 2.

Developing A State Water Plan Utah's Water Resources--Problems And Needs--A Challenge, Utah Water Research Laboratory Jan 1963

Developing A State Water Plan Utah's Water Resources--Problems And Needs--A Challenge, Utah Water Research Laboratory

Reports

Of all the natural resources with which Utah has been endowed none is more vital to the social and economic well-being of the people than it water resource. We cannot manufacture water. We have found no acceptable substitute. Not one more drop of water is available for our use today than was available to the pioneers. Yet water uses and water demands have multiplied over the years. Since we can do little to change nature's water allotment to Utah we must learn how to utilize our existing supplies more judiciously. This means devoting increasingly more attention to problems of water …

A Study Of The Hydraulics Of Drop-Inlet-Type Culvert Models, Ronald D. Hughes Jan 1963

A Study Of The Hydraulics Of Drop-Inlet-Type Culvert Models, Ronald D. Hughes

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In certain unique situations, a drop-inlet-type of culvert might be employed to a greater advantage than the standard box- or pipe-type culvert. A drop-inlet consists merely of a vertical drop-section at the upstream end of the culvert. The drop section is connected to the main barrel of the culvert by means of an elbow or merely a rightangle intersection. The entrance to the drop-section must collect and funnel the channel water into the drop section. Thus, intercepting dams and sidewalls may be needed to form the entrance. Figure 1 illustrates, in a general way, some of the options which may …

Third Annual Performance Survey Of Reinforced Concrete Pipe Culverts, Ronald D. Hughes Jan 1963

Third Annual Performance Survey Of Reinforced Concrete Pipe Culverts, Ronald D. Hughes

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In April, 1957, under Circular Memorandum 22-40, the Bureau of Public Roads issued a rational criterion covering beddings of reinforced concrete pipe, construction methods, and simplified methods for determining the allowable heights of fill over pipe having given D-load strengths. The states were urged to adopt the criterion; and, accordingly, the Kentucky Department of Highways issued Amendments No. 15 and 16 (Feb, 28, 1958) to its 1956 edition of Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction and Standard Drawings Nos. 11.22 and 11.23. These amendments and standard drawings were patterned after the criterion of the Bureau of Public Roads but …
