The Chemical Constituents Of Cast Iron And Their Effect On Its Physical Properties, Frank H. Paatsch Jun 1914

The Chemical Constituents Of Cast Iron And Their Effect On Its Physical Properties, Frank H. Paatsch

Bachelors’ Theses

Carbon is an element of great importance and very - extensively diffused in nature. It exists in large quantities in the mineral kingdom and is the most abundant constituent of animal and vegetable matter. It assumes a greater number of aspects than any of the elements we deal with in connection with iron. In the crystallized state it constitutes the diamond and more or less pure, it forms the substance called plumbago, graphite, black-lead, anthracite and bituminous coal, coke, animal and vegetable charcoal.

Flotation Applied To Joplin Sludge, Thaddeus C. Wilson, Gustaf Axel Hellstrand Jan 1913

Flotation Applied To Joplin Sludge, Thaddeus C. Wilson, Gustaf Axel Hellstrand

Bachelors Theses

"The sludge (fine material) which daily is being sent to the tailing dump by the Joplin mills contains values in lead and zinc often in excess, as to percentage, of that of the crude ore. At present no attempt is being made to treat this It is at this point that it is proposed to introduce some flotation process to supplement the ordinary scheme of wet concentration. With this end in view we have conducted a series of experiments in the flotation of a Joplin sludge"--page 2-3.

Two Lincoln (Nebraska) Typhoid Fever Epidemics Of 1911 And 1912., Herbert H. Waite Jan 1913

Two Lincoln (Nebraska) Typhoid Fever Epidemics Of 1911 And 1912., Herbert H. Waite

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

On August 29, 1912, I was requested by the Board of Health of the city of Lincoln to make an investigation to determine if possible the origin and cause of an outbreak of a disease reported as typhoid fever which was then prevailing. This outbreak was said to be most prevalent in one particular portion of the city and consequently attention was turned to that portion. Of the cases reported an investigation was made of over 60 individuals and after considering all the probable causes for the majority of those affected the conclusion was reached that all could be logically …

Roasting Pyrite For Magnetism With Minimum Sulphur Volatilization, Dale Irwin Hayes, Clark Watson Wright Jan 1912

Roasting Pyrite For Magnetism With Minimum Sulphur Volatilization, Dale Irwin Hayes, Clark Watson Wright

Bachelors Theses

"In Wisconsin and other zinc mining districts the blende is frequently found associated with pyrite and marcasite. In the Wisconsin district, especially, the marcasite content of the mine-run ore is high being frequently equal to and in many cases greater than the sphalerite content. At time the marcasite and sphalerite together constitute as much as 25 or 30% of the min-run ore. The characteristic milling treatment of this ore is; first, hand-picking, and then over grizzlies, tromells, rougher and cleaner jigs. Owing to the fact that marcasite and sphalerite differ but slightly in specific gravity the jig concentrate obtained is …

Energy Loss In Commercial Condensers, Walter Roland Allen May 1910

Energy Loss In Commercial Condensers, Walter Roland Allen

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The investigation of the energy loss in condensers is one which electricians and experimenters have long carried on. Their efforts have been restricted chiefly to alternating currents. Many methods have been proposed and used with varying success. The losses in condensers are due to dielectric hysteresis and leakage. That the dielectric of a condenser becomes heated when an alternating current is applied to terminals has long been known. A condenser which has been charged does not lose its entire charge when it is discharged, part of it remaining as a residual charge. Kleiner used the thermo-couple embedded in the dielectric …

A Study Of The Electrical Resistance Of Coke, Gas-Carbon, And Kryptol Under Varying Conditions, Benton Franklin Murphy, Reuben Conrad Thompson Jan 1910

A Study Of The Electrical Resistance Of Coke, Gas-Carbon, And Kryptol Under Varying Conditions, Benton Franklin Murphy, Reuben Conrad Thompson

Bachelors Theses

"This thesis was undertaken to make a study of the resistance of coke, gas-carbon, and kryptol when used as resistors in the electric resistance furnace, which daily is becoming of increasing industrial importance. It would appear at first sight that the calculation and design of an electric resistance furnace would be an extremely simple problem, since the whole effect is the change of electrical energy into heat according to Joule's Law; but this is by no means the case, as the resistance of the resistor may change enormously during the run of the furnace. The great difficulty met with is …

Reheating Compressed Air By Internal Combustion, Norman L. Ohnsorg Jan 1910

Reheating Compressed Air By Internal Combustion, Norman L. Ohnsorg

Professional Degree Theses

"The perfection of a reheater of high efficiency has been discussed and experimented upon for a period of time nearly as long as the application of compressed air itself. At the present time all the reheaters are by the external combustion of fuel as in the case of stoves or furnaces, where the air pipes are carried through the flames or is surrounded by steam pipes, or by some similar contrivance, all of which the heating efficiency of the fuel upon the compressed air is low, due to the great loss by radiation, and hot escaping gases. Reheating compressed air …

The Relation Of The Composition Of A Mineral To Its Properties, Edwin Phelps Murray Jan 1909

The Relation Of The Composition Of A Mineral To Its Properties, Edwin Phelps Murray

Professional Degree Theses

"The attempt has been made to bring together and to classify the properties of minerals and to show that there is some simple qualitative relation between their composition and physical properties, or in other words, to show that minerals containing different percentages of a certain element will all have similar properties dependent upon the proportion of that element. Further investigation of this subject would be in determining the modifying influence of crystal form"--page 1.

Aluminum As A Commercial Conductor Of Electric Energy, George Edwin Lyman, Edward J. Morris Jan 1902

Aluminum As A Commercial Conductor Of Electric Energy, George Edwin Lyman, Edward J. Morris

Bachelors Theses

"In considering the adaptability of any metal to serve as a distributing agent of electrical energy, the investigation must shape itself along three lines, viz, - the electrical, the physical and the chemical properties which the metal may possess. Evidently a deficiency in any of these properties, if serious, will debar it from successfully coping in the market with its competitors. A metal may have excellent conductivity and its behavior electrically may be thoroughly satisfactory, but if it lacks strength, physically, or ability to resist the destructive forces of the atmosphere, chemically, it is obviously inadaquate sic to serve as …
