Tamoxifen (TMF) is an anticancer agent used for managing estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. It has limited therapeutic efficacy against breast cancer, which could be enhanced by the coadministration of herbal drugs like piperine (PIP). However, the hydrophobic nature of TMF and PIP restricts their therapeutic application. Therefore, the present study focuses on the impact of the anticancer activity of TMF in combination with PIP and after entrapping them into liposomes (TMF-PIP-LPs and TMF-PIP-PEG-LPs). The liposomes were prepared using the thin film hydration method. In addition, the morphology of the prepared liposomes was found spherical after SEM and TEM analyses. Further, …

Public Health Emergencies And The Second Amendment, Amy Swearer, Paul J. Larkin Dec 2024

Public Health Emergencies And The Second Amendment, Amy Swearer, Paul J. Larkin

Denver Law Review

For many decades, gun control advocates, hoping to shift the terms of the debate to more favorable terrain, have argued that gun violence should be viewed primarily through the lens of public health. In September 2023, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and New Mexico Secretary of Health Patrick Allen pushed that rationale to its extreme and beyond. Under the auspices of the state’s public health emergency laws, they issued an executive order and agency directive that effectively eliminated the right of ordinary citizens to bear arms in public in the state’s most populous county. That attempt to circumvent the …

Victim Impact Statements In Mass Tort Bankruptcy Cases: Balancing Chapter 11'S Proceduralism With Tort Law's Commitment To Nonmonetary Recovery, Julia Boccagno

Denver Law Review

Bankruptcy has evolved into tortfeasors’ choice of law for resolving mass tort litigation. The United States Bankruptcy Code is equipped with procedural devices designed to maximize litigants’ financial recovery and enhance judicial efficiency. Although bankruptcy procedures aim to resolve widespread liability and open the courthouse doors to litigants who may not otherwise recover, they simultaneously overlook the nonmonetary and dignitary objectives underlying tort law. This Note uses the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Harrington v. Purdue Pharma—a high-profile example of mass tort litigation resolved through bankruptcy—to examine the extent to which bankruptcy procedures are unable to fulfill the nonmonetary objectives …

"Recognize Me As Who I Am": Names, Pronouns, And The Intersection Of Title Vii And Title Ix, Ariell Bachman

Denver Law Review

In 2020, the Supreme Court decided Bostock v. Clayton County, a case about Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Bostock interpreted Title VII to prohibit employers from using an employee’s sexual orientation or gender identity in adverse employment decisions. Many federal circuit courts and the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) have used Bostock’s reasoning to conclude that Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 prohibits schools from treating a student adversely based on that student’s sexual orientation or gender identity. However, many states and school districts have mandated the intentional use of the incorrect name and …

Causality Analysis For Neural Network Security, Bing Sun Dec 2024

Causality Analysis For Neural Network Security, Bing Sun

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

While neural networks are demonstrating excellent performance in a wide range of applications, there has been a growing concern on their reliability and dependability.Similar to traditional decision-making programs, neural networks inevitably have defects that need to be identified and mitigated at times. Neural networks are usually inherently black-boxes and do not provide explanations on how and why decisions are made. As a result, these defects are more ``hidden" and more challenging to eliminate. It is thus crucial to develop systematic approaches to identify and mitigate defects in a neural network in a rigorous way.

In this dissertation, we focus on …

Robust Learning With Probabilistic Relaxation Using Hypothesis-Test-Based Sampling, Zilin Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In recent years, deep learning has been a vital tool in various tasks. The performance of a neural network is usually evaluated by empirical risk minimization. However, robustness issues have gained great concern which can be fatal in safety-critical applications. Adversarial training can mitigate the issue by minimizing the loss of worst-case perturbations of data. It is effective in improving the robustness of the model, but it is too conservative, and the plain performance of the model can be unsatisfying. Probabilistic Robust Learning (PRL) empirically balances the average- and worst-case performance while the robustness of the model is not provable …

A General Model For The Ductility Of Intermetallics Applied To Fe-Co Alloys, Wesley Everhart, Joseph Newkirk Dec 2024

A General Model For The Ductility Of Intermetallics Applied To Fe-Co Alloys, Wesley Everhart, Joseph Newkirk

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mechanical properties, specifically ductility, of high performing soft magnets such as Fe-Co alloys are a limiting factor to their broader use in a number of systems. The understanding of the mechanical robustness in these materials is currently insufficient to be able to support the growing interest in applications such as magnetic shielding or electric motors. Fe-Co alloys provide the highest commercially available magnetic saturation and high magnetic permeability but have very poor ductility. The addition of vanadium to these alloys has allowed for significant commercialization and some ductility improvements, but the fundamental reasons for the observed improvements are not …

Between 1972 and 1986, Ferdinand E. Marcos of the Philippines headed an autocratic system that allowed him to rule with little to no accountability. Some 36 years after FM (as he is popularly called) and family were driven from power into exile in Hawaii, his son, Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos, Jr., was overwhelmingly elected President in the May 2022 general elections. This turnaround seemed puzzling to many, but others saw a long-term deliberate process of rehabilitation after the family returned to the Philippines. Our paper explores how Filipinos remembered FM in the years after his ouster. What drives the memory of …

Dynamical association of Efimov trimers in thermal gases by means of modulated magnetic fields has proven very fruitful in determining the binding energy of trimers. The latter was extracted from the number of remaining atoms, which featured oscillatory fringes stemming from the superposition of trimers with atom-dimers. Subsequent theoretical investigations utilizing the time-dependent three-body problem revealed additional association mechanisms, manifested as superpositions of the Efimov state with the trap states and the latter with atom-dimers. The three atoms were initialized in a way to emulate a thermal gas with uniform density. Here, this analysis is extended by taking into account …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate magneto-optical trap-loss spectroscopy of Rydberg excited Rb85 (66≤n≤68S1/2) atoms, placed inside a tailored microwave cavity. The cavity frequency at 13.053 GHz is in resonance with the 67S1/2→66P3/2 transition, inducing a ladder multiphoton microwave Rydberg absorption and emission. The observed spectra are modeled with an extended Jaynes-Cummings formalism that accounts for nonlinear multiphoton absorption from and emission into the cavity, the loss from the trap due to Rydberg excitation, and cavity imperfection. We calculate the average photons in each spectral feature and find evidence for fractional photon emission into the cavity modes within the loss spectra. The microwave cavity …
