In 1952 the University of Michigan Law School, as a part of its summer session program, offered an Institute entitled "Industrial and Legal Problems of Atomic Energy. " The 1946 Atomic Energy Act, creating a virtually complete government monopoly, was then in effect, and private development of peaceful uses of atomic energy was for the most part merely a gleam in the eyes of a few forward-looking individuals. "This thesis will concern itself primarily with the preparation, handling and calcination of Missouri fire clays that are subsequently used as "grog" for manufacture of fire brick. This "grog", i.e., calcined flint, burley or diaspore clay is then mixed with ether clays having plastic qualities to form desired shapes of high temperature refractories, and burned as a final product in tunnel kilns and as required, in “beehive” or periodic kilns. "1. The Froude number criterion for weir flow was shown to be sound and accurate by experimental verification of the theoretical correlation of Froude number and critical depth. It was proved that sub-critical, critical and super-critical flows are correctly identified by the Froude number.

Theses

The object of this project ras to obtain a reasonable correlation of the effect of velocity, concentration and particle size on apparent viscosity of non-Newtonian slurries.

Through the use of dimensional and graphical analysis an equation, μ/μ_w=1.02(Ak/GC)^.105, was developed which filled these conditions. The average deviation of the apparent viscosity calculated from this equation compared to the experimental value was 14.4%.

The authors believe that this correlation should be tested under a greater variety of conditions of particle size and particle thermal conductivity and for suspending mediums other than water.

This paper contains results of analyses with asphalts of various composition and derivation. The objective of the study is to define and correlate constitution and fundamental character of asphalts in a manner significant to their use in highway pavements.

Further confirmation of the existence of three discrete solubility fractions in asphalts was obtained by extraction methods and by paper partition chromatography. Paraffin bodies were revealed by microscopic examination of thin films. Asphaltene fractions showed the presence of particulate material by electron microscopy and also revealed indications of peptized asphaltene bodies. Oils dialyzed from asphalt exhibited u.v. fluorescence similar to components …

"In recent years, considerable interest has been shown in the manufacture of titanium metal because of its outstanding properties both physical and chemical. The commercial process for the preparation of metallic titanium, known as the Kroll process, consists essentially of the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium in an inert atmosphere to produce titanium metal with magnesium chloride as a by-product.
