Decentralized Digital Fabrication Of Flexible Micro/Nano Devices Using A Laserjet Printer, Arshya Bamshad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The fabrication of traditional micro/nano devices requires access to cleanrooms, complex and expensive tools, and highly-skilled labor. A facile and digital do-it-yourself (DIY) technique for the fabrication of low-cost devices on flexible substrates (paper, cloth, and plastic films) is presented in this work. A set of office-grade equipment (i.e., laserjet printer, thermal laminator, computer-aided paper cutter), and commercially available supplies (i.e., baking wax paper, furniture restoration metal-leaf) are utilized. The presented technology enables community-embedded production by removing a high technological barrier. The validity of the proposed technology was proved by designing three levels of experiments, i.e., patterns, devices, and systems. …

In recent years, the emerging technology of cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) has grown rapidly along with the many medical applications of cold plasma (e.g., cancer, skin disease, tissue repair, etc.). Plasma-activated liquids (e.g., culture media, water, or normal saline, previously exposed to plasma) are being studied as cancer treatments, and due to their advantages, many researchers prefer plasma-activated liquids as an alternative to CAP in the treatment of cancer. In this study, we showed that plasma-activated-saline (PAS) treatment significantly inhibited tumor growth, as compared with saline, in melanoma, and a low-pH environment had little effect on tumor growth in …

Challenges Of Constructing Entrainment Map For Arbitrary Circadian Models, Yuxuan (Nelson) Wu Jan 2022

Challenges Of Constructing Entrainment Map For Arbitrary Circadian Models, Yuxuan (Nelson) Wu

Honors Theses

The entrainment map, developed by Dr.Diekman and Dr.Bose, is claimed to be a 1-dimensional map that produces a better prediction for phase-locking than methods than the phase response curve for circadian models. In his paper, he constructs the entrainment map for the two-dimensional circadian model, the Novak-Tyson model, and the other two higher-dimensional circadian models. For this thesis, we concentrate on exploring if it is viable to construct the entrainment map for other circadian models that are not included in his paper: the Becker-Weimann model and the Relogio model. In addition, we discuss the challenges of constructing the entrainment map …

Stimuli-Responsive Chitosan-Based Hydrogels For Antibiotic Delivery, Tu Tran Vo Minh Jan 2022

Stimuli-Responsive Chitosan-Based Hydrogels For Antibiotic Delivery, Tu Tran Vo Minh

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study aims to investigate hydrogels fabricated via green approaches for drug delivery application. Biocompatible polymer-based drug delivery systems (DDS) have gained popularity in recent years because of their ability to improve the efficacy and safety of drug delivery by providing targeted and sustained release of drugs to reduce the frequency of dosing, making it more convenient for patients. Chitosan is one of the polymers commonly used for this purpose due to their higher water retention and porosity, which create space for loading medicine into the matrix. However, the potential utilization of endogenous and exogenous stimuli controlling drug release still …

Computational Modeling Of Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation Coupled With Hydrogen Production In A Photoelectrochemical Reactor, Thorfhan Hanamorn Jan 2022

Computational Modeling Of Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation Coupled With Hydrogen Production In A Photoelectrochemical Reactor, Thorfhan Hanamorn

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells, hydrogen production at the cathode must be coupled with the oxidation reaction at the anode. Selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol into benzaldehyde is an attractive alternative pathway due to its lower overpotential than the traditional oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, simulation of selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol into benzaldehyde paired with hydrogen production in 2 chambers of 2-dimensional PEC reactor was studied using COMSOL Multiphysics (5.6). Charge transport and electrochemical kinetics were simulated using Nernst Planck’s and Butler Volmer's equations, respectively. The results have showed that hydrogen and benzaldehyde concentrations on electrode surfaces increased …

Analysis Of Non-Conventional Radiological Terrorism, James N. Padgett Jan 2022

Analysis Of Non-Conventional Radiological Terrorism, James N. Padgett

Theses and Dissertations

Nuclear terrorism has been a risk since the dawn of the first atomic bomb. Though state sponsored nuclear weapons development is of concern for countries, non-state sponsored terrorism with radiological material can be of even greater concern. This stems from the fact that the material is under less stringent or no safeguards and can readily change hands between different terrorist groups or innocent civilians may accidently come into contact with the material.

Within this paper an analysis of previous accidents using orphan radiological sources, malicious use of orphan radiological sources, and how these sources could be used by terrorists is …

Universal Design In Bci: Deep Learning Approaches For Adaptive Speech Brain-Computer Interfaces, Srdjan Lesaja Jan 2022

Universal Design In Bci: Deep Learning Approaches For Adaptive Speech Brain-Computer Interfaces, Srdjan Lesaja

Theses and Dissertations

In the last two decades, there have been many breakthrough advancements in non-invasive and invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. However, the majority of BCI model designs still follow a paradigm whereby neural signals are preprocessed and task-related features extracted using static, and generally customized, data-independent designs. Such BCI designs commonly optimize narrow task performance over generalizability, adaptability, and robustness, which is not well suited to meeting individual user needs. If one day BCIs are to be capable of decoding our higher-order cognitive commands and conceptual maps, their designs will need to be adaptive architectures that will evolve and grow in …

Antagonistic Co-Contraction Can Minimize Muscular Effort In Systems With Uncertainty, Anne D. Koelewijn, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Muscular co-contraction of antagonistic muscle pairs is often observed in human movement, but it is considered inefficient and it can currently not be predicted in
simulations where muscular effort or metabolic energy are minimized. Here, we investigated the relationship between minimizing effort and muscular co-contraction
in systems with random uncertainty to see if muscular co-contraction can minimize effort in such system. We also investigated the effect of time delay in the muscle, by varying the time delay in the neural control as well as the activation time constant. We solved optimal control problems for a one-degree-of-freedom pendulum actuated by two identical …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The detection of energetic compounds – better known to the public as explosives – has is an important cornerstone of counterterrorism and homeland security . While significant advances have been achieved for the detection of trace explosives in various matrices such as soil, wastewater, and clothing, the detection of explosives in the gas phase remains challenging due to their infamously low vapor pressures. In this thesis, we leverage the high sensitivity of direct analysis in real-time mass spectrometry (DART-MS) and the microporosity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to adsorb and therefore concentrate explosives from the vapor phase and subsequently detect them …
