Using Rsm, Doe, And Linear Regression To Develop A Metamodel To Predict Cargo Delivery Of A Time Phase Force Deployment Document, Kenneth S. Browne
Using Rsm, Doe, And Linear Regression To Develop A Metamodel To Predict Cargo Delivery Of A Time Phase Force Deployment Document, Kenneth S. Browne
Theses and Dissertations
Air Mobility Command (AMC) uses the Airlift Flow Model as their primary tool to estimate the amount of cargo delivered in a Time Phase Force Deployment Document (TPFDD). The primary objective of this research was an exploratory investigation in the development of a metamodel to predict the amount of cargo delivered from a TPFDD by AMC into a theater. In creating a valid metamodel the analyst would be able to quickly provide the decision-maker with accurate insights should input parameters change. This would save valuable time and replace the need to physically change the input parameters and re-run the simulation. …
Effects Of Moisture Content In Solid Waste Landfills, Craig P. Eck
Effects Of Moisture Content In Solid Waste Landfills, Craig P. Eck
Theses and Dissertations
Solid waste landfills are an extremely complex and heterogeneous environment. Modeling the biodegradation processes within a landfill must involve an understanding of how environmental factors affect these processes. Arguably, the most important environmental factor influencing biodegradation processes is solid waste moisture content. This research effort, which is an extension of a system dynamics model previously presented by Colborn (1997) and amended by Benter (1999), attempts to understand and model the effects of moisture content on waste degradation and landfill gas generation. The new moisture structure that was added to the previous models provides a better representation of the impact of …

A Distributed Agent Architecture For A Computer Virus Immune System, Paul K. Harmer
Theses and Dissertations
Information superiority is identified as an Air Force core competency and is recognized as a key enabler for the success of future missions. Information protection and information assurance are vital components required for achieving superiority in the Infosphere, but these goals are threatened by the exponential birth rate of new computer viruses. The increased global interconnectivity that is empowering advanced information systems is also increasing the spread of malicious code and current anti-virus solutions are quickly becoming overwhelmed by the burden of capturing and classifying new viral stains. To overcome this problem, a distributed computer virus immune system (CVIS) based …

Civil and Environmental Engineering
Surface coatings (biofilms and associated minerals) were collected on glass slides in the toxic surface waters of Cayuga Lake (New York State, U.S.A.) and were used to evaluate the relative contributions of Fe, Mn and Al oxides and organic material to total observed Pb and Cd adsorption by the surface coating materials. Several alternative selective extraction techniques were evaluated with respect to both selectivity and alteration of the residual unextracted material. Pb and Cd adsorption was measured under controlled laboratory conditions (mineral salts solution with defined metal speciation, ionic strength 0.05 M, 25°C and pH 6.0) before and after extractions …

On The Assessment Of Stability And Patterning Of Speech Movements, Anne Smith, Michael T. Johnson, Clare Mcgillem, Lisa Goffman
On The Assessment Of Stability And Patterning Of Speech Movements, Anne Smith, Michael T. Johnson, Clare Mcgillem, Lisa Goffman
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Speech requires the control of complex movements of orofacial structures to produce dynamic variations in the vocal tract transfer function. The nature of the underlying motor control processes has traditionally been investigated by employing measures of articulatory movements, including movement amplitude, velocity, and duration, at selected points in time. An alternative approach, first used in the study of limb motion, is to examine the entire movement trajectory over time. A new approach to speech movement trajectory analysis was introduced in earlier work from this laboratory. In this method, trajectories from multiple movement sequences are time- and amplitude-normalized, and the STI …
Finite Fraction Method For Tracking Desinfection By-Product Precursors In Water Treatment, Doanh Van
Finite Fraction Method For Tracking Desinfection By-Product Precursors In Water Treatment, Doanh Van
Dissertations
Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) has been the subject of recent regulatory activities and agenda. Among them are the Infonnation Collection Rule (ICR), the Disinfectants/Disinfection By-Product Rule (D/DBPR) and the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (ESWTR). Both the latter two have provisions to limit the formation of disinfection by-products (DBP) by controlling reactivity and removal of DOM or both. Brief regulatory review of these rules was given.
Although the topic of DBP formation potential and DBP precursor removal have been studied by many researchers since Rooks (1974), the efficacy of methods that have been developed to date has been handicapped …

Measurement Of Microcarrier Weighted Floc Using The Environmental Electron Microscope, Viriya Vithayaveroj
Theses
Utilizing the concept of coagulation in conjunction with the sediment enhancement by microcarrier, the microcarrier process has been demonstrated in a laboratory investigation as an effective and economic operation in removing colloidal particles in an aquatic system. The microcarrier, an inert aluminum silicate particulate (Ottawa Sand) of 53 to 75 micrometers in diameter was used in this study. The interaction between the flocs and the microcarriers plays an important role in the mixing process. The principal objective of this study is to examine the structural interaction between the flocs and the microcarrier.
The study was designed into two stages, the …
Investigation Of The Relevance Of Heart Rate Variability Changes After Heart Transplantation, Sheeba Arnold
Investigation Of The Relevance Of Heart Rate Variability Changes After Heart Transplantation, Sheeba Arnold
Theses
Heart transplantation has become an established treatment for end-stage heart disease. However, the shortage of donor organs is a major problem and long-term results are limited by allograft rejection. Heart rate variability (HRV) has emerged as a popular noninvasive research tool in cardiology. Analysis of HRV is regarded as a valid technique to assess the sympathovagal balance of the heart. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the relevance of heart rate variability changes after heart transplantation. It was found that spectral analysis of HRV is useful in detecting rejection episodes. Heart transplantation leaves the donor heart denervated. …
Intelligent Process For Uasb Reactors, Sita Mohan
Intelligent Process For Uasb Reactors, Sita Mohan
Theses
The Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor is widely used for the anaerobic treatment of concentrated municipal / industrial wastewaters and sludges. Ability to handle high organic loading rates and cost effectiveness are often the most cited merits of the UASB process. Numerous mathematical models have been developed to describe the process and mechanistic phenomena in these systems. However, evidence in the literature of these models having been applied, either as control or diagnostic tools is limited. The use of intelligent process control mechanisms can greatly ease problems associated with operating these reactor systems.
The objective of this study is …

Purification Of Immunoglobulins From Serum Using Thiophilic Cellulose Beads, Anuradha Subramanian
Papers in Biotechnology
This study evaluates the chromatographic performance of a support obtained by the reaction of mercaptoethanol with cellulose beads activated with divinyl sulfone. Cellulose beads 500-800 microns (pm) in diameter and with a solids content of 3.5% were selected for this study. A two-step sequence of permeation and reaction was used to install thiophilic sites throughout the cross section of the bead. The distribution of thiophilic sites was visualized by immobilizing fluorescent antibodies. Human and porcine serum proteins were separated on the thiophilic support at different linear velocities. Thiophilic cellulose beads were observed to bind human and porcine immunoglobulins (IgG) selectively …
Development Of Exponential-Fitted Numerical Methods For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi
Development Of Exponential-Fitted Numerical Methods For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi
Conference papers
Simulation of energy flows in buildings is computationally intensive. Consequently, improvements in computing power and algorithm efficiency can always be utilized. Commonly used implicit solvers require extensive matrix processing while standard explicit methods have limited stability and progress in very small time increments. In this work, a number of stable numerical methods are examined which are explicit in nature and therefore do not require the use of matrices. One such algorithm and two proposed developments of it are assessed using a building related test problem prepared for this purpose, and their performances are compared with that of an efficient implicit …
Use Of The Generalized Integral Transform Method For Solving Equations Of Solute Transport In Porous Media, Chongxuan Liu, Jim E. Szecsody, John M. Zachara, William P. Ball
Use Of The Generalized Integral Transform Method For Solving Equations Of Solute Transport In Porous Media, Chongxuan Liu, Jim E. Szecsody, John M. Zachara, William P. Ball
United States Department of Energy: Publications
The generalized integral transform technique (GITT) is applied to solve the one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation (ADE) in heterogeneous porous media coupled with either linear or nonlinear sorption and decay. When both sorption and decay are linear, analytical solutions are obtained using the GITT for one-dimensional ADEs with spatially and temporally variable flow and dispersion coefficient and arbitrary initial and boundary conditions. When either sorption or decay is nonlinear the solutions to ADEs with the GITT are hybrid analytical-numerical. In both linear and nonlinear cases, the forward and inverse integral transforms for the problems described in the paper are apparent and straightforward. …
Improved Direct Solver For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi
Improved Direct Solver For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi
Articles
Finite difference methods, when applied to the differential equations modelling energy flows in buildings, give rise to a system of non-linear difference equations. A frequently used direct solution method involving linearization is analysed and a related method proposed. These and one other connected method are compared using a building related test problem prepared for this purpose. The proposed numerical method is found to produce least error, about 30% less than the commonly used method, and it is recommended for inclusion in building energy simulation software. A fundamental method for estimating the pre conditioning period of a building, arising from the …

Response Of A Sage Grouse Breeding Population To Fire In Southeastern Idaho, John W. Connelly, Kerry P. Reese, Richard A. Fischer, Wayne L. Wakkinen
United States Army: Publications
Prescribed burning is a common method to eliminate sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) and has been suggested as a tool to enhance the habitat of sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus). Effects of this practice on sage grouse have not been evaluated rigorously. We studied effects of prescribed fire on lek (traditional breeding display areas) attendance by male sage grouse occupying low-precipitation (<26 cm) sagebrush habitats in south- eastern Idaho from 1986 through 1994. During the preburn period (1986-89), average declines for male attendance were 48% and 46% for treatment and control leks, respectively. Lek counts were similar for treatment and control leks during the preburn years (G-test, 0.25>P>0.10). During the postburn period (1990-94), male attendance at treatment leks declined 90% and control leks declined 63%. Although declines were similar between treatment and control leks during the preburn period, postburn declines were greater for treatment …26>

Development Of Vaccines For Prevention Of Botulism, Michael P. Byrne, Leonard A. Smith
United States Army: Publications
Botulism is a potentially lethal disease caused by one of seven homologous neurotoxic proteins usually produced by the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. This neuromuscular disorder occurs through an exquisite series of molecular events, ultimately ending with the arrest of acetylcholine release and hence, flaccid paralysis. The development of vaccines that protect against botulism dates back to the 1940s. Currently, a pentavalent vaccine that protects against BoNT serotypes A-E and a separate monovalent vaccine that protects against BoNT serotype F are available as Investigational New Drugs. However, due to the numerous shortcomings associated with the toxoid vaccines, several groups have efforts …

Although dissimilatory iron reducing bacteria (DIRB) are capable of reducing a number of metals in oxides and soluble forms, the factors controlling the raterextent of magnetite reduction and the nature of the mineral products resulting from magnetite reduction are not well understood. This study was carried out to investigate mechanisms and biogeochemical processes occurring during magnetite reduction by the DIRB, Shewanella putrefaciens strains CN32 and MR-1. Reduction experiments were performed with biogenic and synthetic magnetite in well-defined solutions. Biogenic magnetite was generated via microbial reduction of hydrous ferric oxide (HFO). Biogenic magnetite in solutions buffered with either bicarbonate (HCO3 …

Bottom-Up Design Of Artificial Neural Network For Single-Lead Electrocardiogram Beat And Rhythm Classification, Srikanth Thiagarajan
Bottom-Up Design Of Artificial Neural Network For Single-Lead Electrocardiogram Beat And Rhythm Classification, Srikanth Thiagarajan
Doctoral Dissertations
Performance improvement in computerized Electrocardiogram (ECG) classification is vital to improve reliability in this life-saving technology. The non-linearly overlapping nature of the ECG classification task prevents the statistical and the syntactic procedures from reaching the maximum performance. A new approach, a neural network-based classification scheme, has been implemented in clinical ECG problems with much success. The focus, however, has been on narrow clinical problem domains and the implementations lacked engineering precision. An optimal utilization of frequency information was missing. This dissertation attempts to improve the accuracy of neural network-based single-lead (lead-II) ECG beat and rhythm classification. A bottom-up approach defined …
