Early space radiation shield code development relied on Monte Carlo methods and made important contributions to the space program. Monte Carlo methods have resorted to restricted one-dimensional problems leading to imperfect representation of appropriate boundary conditions. Even so, intensive computational requirements resulted and shield evaluation was made near the end of the design process. Resolving shielding issues usually had a negative impact on the design. Improved spacecraft shield design requires early entry of radiation constraints into the design process to maximize performance and minimize costs. As a result, we have been investigating high-speed computational procedures to allow shield analysis from …

Air Vehicle Path Planning, Jeffrey M. Hebert
Air Vehicle Path Planning, Jeffrey M. Hebert
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores optimal path planning for air vehicles. An air vehicle exposed to illumination by a tracking radar is considered and the problem of determining an optimal planar trajectory connecting two prespecified points is addressed. An analytic solution yielding the trajectory minimizing the received radar energy reflected from the target is derived using the Calculus of Variations. Additionally, the related problem of an air vehicle tracked by a passive sensor is also solved. Using the insights gained from the single air vehicle radar exposure minimization problem, a hierarchical cooperative control law is formulated to determine the optimal trajectories that …

The objective of this study was to develop an X-ray computed tomographic method for pulmonary arterial morphometry. The lungs were removed from a rat, and the pulmonary arterial tree was filled with perfluorooctyl bromide to enhance X-ray absorbance. At each of four pulmonary arterial pressures (30, 21, 12, and 5.4 mmHg), the lungs were rotated within the cone of the X-ray beam that was projected from a microfocal X-ray source onto an image intensifier, and 360 images were obtained at 1° increments. The three-dimensional image volumes were reconstructed with isotropic resolution with the use of a cone beam reconstruction algorithm. …
A Theory Of Volumetric Growth For Compressible Elastic Biological Materials, Stephen M. Klisch, Timothy J. Van Dyke, Anne Hoger
A Theory Of Volumetric Growth For Compressible Elastic Biological Materials, Stephen M. Klisch, Timothy J. Van Dyke, Anne Hoger
Mechanical Engineering
A general theory of volumetric growth for compressible elastic materials is presented. The authors derive a complete set of governing equations in the present configuration for an elastic material undergoing a continuous growth process. In particular, they obtain two constitutive restrictions from a work-energy principle. First, the authors show that a growing elastic material behaves as a Green-elastic material. Second, they obtain an expression that relates the stress power due to growth to the rate of energy change due to growth. Then, the governing equations for a small increment of growth are derived from the more general theory. The equations …

Will Voluntary And Educational Programs Meet Environmental Objectives? Evidence From A Survey Of New York Dairy Farms, Gregory L. Poe, Nelson L. Bills, B. C. Bellows, Patricia Crosscombe, Richard K. Koelsch, Michael J. Kreher, Peter Wright
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
This paper presents the results from a survey of New York dairy farms that links manure management practices and farmer willingness to participate in voluntary environmental programs, focusing on those operations that are not automatically designated as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations. A wide divergence is found between actual and recommended manure management practices on individual dairy farms (high), the apparent ability of farms to divert financial resources to environmental practices (mixed), and the willingness to participate in voluntary programs at various annual costs per cow (low). These findings have policy implications for the USDA/USEPA National Strategy for Animal Feeding Operations.

High-elevation red spruce [Picea rubens Sarg.]-Fraser fir [Abies fraseri (Pursh.) Poir] forests in the Southern Appalachians currently receive large nitrogen (N) inputs via atmospheric deposition (30 kg N ha(-1) year(-1)) but have limited N retention capacity due to a combination of stand age, heavy fir mortality caused by exotic insect infestations, and numerous gaps caused by windfalls and ice storms. This study examined the magnitude and timing of the N fluxes into, through, and out of a small, first-order catchment in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It also examined the role of climatic conditions in causing interannual variations in …

Non-Repressing Carbon Sources For Alcohol Oxidase (Aoxi) Promoter Of Pichia Pastoris, Mehmet İnan, Michael M. Meagher
Papers in Biochemical Engineering
The growth of Pichia pastoris in a mixture of either glycerol or glucose and methanol follows a diauxic growth, with C1, utilizing enzymes being repressed. Therefore, these carbon sources can not be used as a mixture with methanol to simultaneously grow P. pastoris and induce C1, utilizing enzymes, especially in shake flask cultures of AOX-deficient P. pastoris. Among the alternative carbon sources tested, alanine, sorbitol, mannitol and trehalose, did not repress β-gal production when methanol was used as an inducer in mut- strain of P. pastoris. Our results show that either one of alanine, sorbitol, …
Monte Carlo Simulations Of Peptide Adsorption On Solid Surfaces (Monte Carlo Simulations Of Peptide Adsorption), D. Song, Daniel Forciniti
Monte Carlo Simulations Of Peptide Adsorption On Solid Surfaces (Monte Carlo Simulations Of Peptide Adsorption), D. Song, Daniel Forciniti
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of a short peptide in bulk water and at charged and neutral surfaces were performed. To pursue the objective of finding whether or not the water structure around the peptide changes upon adsorption and how these changes affect the orientation of the peptide at the surface, the water structure around the peptide in the bulk and at charged and neutral surfaces were compared by analyzing the pair correlation functions (PCFs) between selected groups in the peptide and the surrounding water. In general, evidence was obtained that water is not homogeneously distributed over the peptide surface.

Taylor Cone And Jetting From Liquid Droplets In Electrospinning Of Nanofibers, Alexander L. Yarin, S Koombhongse, Darrell Hyson Reneker
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
Sessile and pendant droplets of polymer solutions acquire stable shapes when they are electrically charged by applying an electrical potential difference between the droplet and a flat plate, if the potential is not too large. These stable shapes result only from equilibrium of the electric forces and surface tension in the cases of inviscid, Newtonian, and viscoelastic liquids. In liquids with a nonrelaxing elastic force, that force also affects the shapes. It is widely assumed that when the critical potential phi (0*) has been reached and any further increase will destroy the equilibrium, the liquid body acquires a conical shape …

Papers in Biochemical Engineering
Phosphoglycolate phosphatase (PGPase), a key en¬zyme of photorespiration in photosynthetic organisms, was purified from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The en¬zyme was an ~65-kDa homodimer with a pI value of 5.1 composed of ~32-kDa subunits not connected by any S–S bridges. It was also highly specific for phosphoglycolate with a Km value of 140 μM and an optimal pH between 8 and 9. The activity was strongly inhibited by CaCl2, and it recovered competitively following the addition of MgCl2 or EGTA. A mobility shift was observed in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis by the addition of CaCl2, indicating that the enzyme binds to Ca2+ . …

Low Proof Load Prediction Of Ultimate Strengths Of Fiberglass/Epoxy I-Beams Using Acoustic Emission, Edward C. Fatzinger Jr.
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Acoustic emission (AE) nondestructive testing was used to monitor fiberglass/epoxy I-beams. The experiment consisted of loading the I-beams in cantilever fashion with a hydraulic ram. While testing, AE waveforms were collected from the onset of loading to failure. After acquisition, the AE data from each test were filtered to include only data collected up to 50% of the theoretical ultimate load for further analysis.
A Kohonen self-organizing map was utilized to separate each individual data point (hit) into failure mechanism clusters. Then a multiple linear regression analysis was performed using the percentage of hits associated with each failure mechanism along …

Evolutionary Polymorphic Neural Networks In Chemical Engineering Modeling, Li Gao
Evolutionary Polymorphic Neural Networks In Chemical Engineering Modeling, Li Gao
Dissertations
Evolutionary Polymorphic Neural Network (EPNN) is a novel approach to modeling chemical, biochemical and physical processes. This approach has its basis in modern artificial intelligence, especially neural networks and evolutionary computing. EPNN can perform networked symbolic regressions for input-output data, while providing information about both the structure and complexity of a process during its own evolution.
In this work three different processes are modeled: 1. A dynamic neutralization process. 2. An aqueous two-phase system. 3. Reduction of a biodegradation model. In all three cases, EPNN shows better or at least equal performances over published data than traditional thermodynamics /transport or …

Dynamic Friction Of Uhmwpe Angular Compliant Bearing For Joint Implants And Machinery, Max Roman
Theses
The feasibility of a unique design of orthopedic- joint implant is investigated. The work focuses on the dynamic friction characteristics of a new joint. This unique design can be also useful in machinery involving oscillating motion similar to that of the hip joint during walking. An elastomeric layer bonded behind the rigid acetubular cup can be beneficial in improving the durability of prosthetic implants. Angular compliance offered by the elastomeric layer reduces relative sliding between the surfaces, lowers contact stresses by distributing pressure more evenly, and reduces the possibility of incongruent loading conditions caused by misalignment. The application of a …

The biotransformation of four different classes of aromatic compounds by the Escherichia coli strain DH5α(pTCB 144), which contained the chlorobenzene dioxygenase (CDO) from Pseudomonas sp. strain P51, was examined. CDO oxidized biphenyl as well as monochlorobiphenyls to the corresponding cis-2,3-dihydro-2,3-dihydroxy derivatives, whereby oxidation occurred on the unsubstituted ring. No higher substituted biphenyls were oxidized. The absolute configurations of several monosubstituted cis-benzene dihydrodiols formed by CDO were determined. All had an S configuration at the carbon atom in meta position to the substituent on the benzene nucleus. with one exception, the enantiomeric excess of several 1,4-disubstituted cis-benzene dihydrodiols formed by CDO …

A composite media containing particles with a high internal field of magnetic anisotropy (hexagonal ferrites) useful for numerous EMC applications in a wide frequency band is considered. Effective constitutive parameters of a high-loss composite gyromagnetic media are represented in the Lorentzian form. It is convenient for the numerical analysis using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm with a recursive convolution procedure. The equations for the electric and magnetic field updating in such media are represented.

The Effect Of Ethanol And Acetate On Protein Expression In Pichia Pastoris, Mehmet İnan, Michael M. Meagher
Papers in Biochemical Engineering
Pichia pastoris is an excellent host for high-level heterologous gene expression, but there is still much interest in improving the productivity of recombinant protein production. P. pastoris produces a small amount of ethanol as a by-product during the glycerol fed-batch phase and the mixed-feed induction phase (glycerol-methanol) of high cell density fermentations, regardless of the phenotype (Mutf, Mut" or Mut-). We have investigated ethanol repression of the AOXl promoter using strains, GS115 (Mutf) and MC100-3 (Mut-), expressing an AOXI-lac2 fusion. The addition of 10 mg t1 ethanol at the start of methanol induction delayed P-galactosidase production and methanol utilization …
