Spatial And Temporal Temperature Distributions In Municipal Solid Waste Landfills, James L. Hanson, Nazli Yesiller, Nicolas K. Oettle
Spatial And Temporal Temperature Distributions In Municipal Solid Waste Landfills, James L. Hanson, Nazli Yesiller, Nicolas K. Oettle
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Long-term spatial and temporal variations in temperatures have been investigated in covers, wastes, and liners at four municipal solid waste landfills located in different climatic regions: Alaska, British Columbia, Michigan, and New Mexico. Temperatures were measured in wastes with a broad range of ages from newly placed to old (up to 40 years). The characteristic shape of waste temperature versus depth relationships consisted of a convex temperature profile with maximum temperatures observed at central locations within the middle third fraction of the depth of the waste mass. Lower temperatures were observed above and below this central zone, with seasonal fluctuations …

Structural Bioinformatics Based Method For Predicting The Initial Adsorbed Protein Orientation On A Surface, Aby Thyparambil
Structural Bioinformatics Based Method For Predicting The Initial Adsorbed Protein Orientation On A Surface, Aby Thyparambil
All Theses
In any molecular simulation of protein-surface interaction, the selection of the initial orientation with which the protein would interact with the surface must be first made and is found to be critical in the determination of the bioactive state of the adsorbed protein. While various molecular simulation methods have been developed to identify the preferred orientation, these methods are generally computationally expensive and time consuming, especially for large molecules thereby motivating the current study.
The computational implementation for identifying a preferred orientation was done in MATLAB¨ and directly addresses the current research problem by assuming the protein to be rigid …
Process Development For The Fractionation And Isolation Of Corn Fiber Hemicellulose, Justin Montanti
Process Development For The Fractionation And Isolation Of Corn Fiber Hemicellulose, Justin Montanti
All Theses
Corn fiber is a co-product of the corn wet-milling process that holds potential to become a value-added product. A process was developed to fractionate and isolate the hemicellulose B component of corn fiber generated by corn wet milling. The process consisted of pretreatment by soaking in aqueous ammonia (SAA) of starch-free corn fiber followed by enzymatic cellulose hydrolysis, during which the hemicellulose B was solubilized by cleavage into xylo-oligosaccharides. The hemicellulose A and B fractions were separated by adjustment of pH, and the hemicellulose B recovered by precipitation with ethanol.
The pretreatment step resulted in a high retention of major …

Surface Characterization And Electrochemical Behavior Of Colloidal Particles, Cinta Pepin
All Theses
There is an ongoing interest in research focused on developing polymeric organic-light-emitting-devices (OLED) to replace inorganic devices. Compared to inorganic devices, OLEDs could present better properties such as higher efficiency, lower cost and simpler device fabrication. In an attempt to get a device with high efficiency, the hole transporting group and the electron transporting group were combined into a polymer to make an individual 'particle device'. The idea was to create a polymer particle containing both charge transporting moieties via emulsion polymerization. In this presentation, different techniques will be described that were used to determine the stability and the surface …

Blast traumatic brain injury (BTBI) has become an important topic of study because of the increase of such incidents, especially due to the recent growth of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). This thesis discusses a project in which laboratory testing of BTBI was made possible by performing blast loading on experimental models simulating the human head. Three versions of experimental models were prepared – one having a simple geometry and the other two having geometry similar to a human head. For developing the head models, three important parts of the head were considered for material modeling and analysis – the skin, …
State Estimation For Diffusion Systems Using A Karhunen-Loeve-Galerkin Reduced-Order Model, Justin Mattimore
State Estimation For Diffusion Systems Using A Karhunen-Loeve-Galerkin Reduced-Order Model, Justin Mattimore
All Theses
This thesis focuses on generating a continuous estimate of state using a small number of sensors for a process modeled by the diffusion partial differential equation(PDE). In biological systems the diffusion of oxygen in tissue is well described by the diffusion equation, also known by biologists as Fick's first law. Mass transport of many other materials in biological systems are modeled by the diffusion PDE such as CO2, cell signaling factors, glucose and other biomolecules.
Estimating the state of a PDE is more formidable than that of a system described by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). While the state variables of …

Evaluation Of Toxicity Analysis For Foundry Sand Specifications, M. Katherine Banks, A. Paul Schwab
JTRP Technical Reports
Byproducts from many industries have the potential to be used as construction materials, but some means is required to determine if the material is environmentally benign. Foundry sands are produced in many states and can be useful as in transportation projects. However, INDOT currently requires the use of the MICROTOX test to assess the potential toxicity of the sands, and this requirement is viewed as an unnecessary impediment by the producers of foundry sands and is a requirement not encountered in other states. Therefore, the goal of this project was to review current requirements for testing of recycled materials, determine …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Performance of a diesel engine, equipped for ethanol and water fumigation, was studied. The method implemented allowed for non-destructive introduction of liquids in advance of the turbocharger. Engine torque, speed, emission components, diesel and ethanol fuel rates were recorded and analyzed for each mixture of inputs. Based on the results of the study, thermal efficiency was not significantly different from the baseline diesel performance when using several ethanol and water mixtures. On the other hand, ethanol fumigation caused a significant reduction in NOx emissions and an increase in HC and CO emissions. No significant changes in CO2 or O2 occurred.

Investigation Of Potential Pathways And Multi-Cycle Bioregeneration Of Ion-Exchange Resin Laden With Perchlorate, Mohamadali Sharbatmaleki
Investigation Of Potential Pathways And Multi-Cycle Bioregeneration Of Ion-Exchange Resin Laden With Perchlorate, Mohamadali Sharbatmaleki
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Ion-exchange (IX) is possibly the most feasible technology for perchlorate removal and perchlorate-selective and non-selective IX resins are commercially available for this purpose. The use of both resins has shortcomings. Selective resins are incinerated after one time use, and non-selective resins produce a regenerant waste stream that contains high concentration of perchlorate. A process involving directly contacting of spent IX resin containing perchlorate with perchlorate-reducing bacteria (PRB) to bioregenerate the resin has been developed and proven recently. In this process PRB biodegrade perchlorate ions which are attached to the functional groups of the resin.
Although its feasibility has been proven, …

Automated Procedures For Quantification Of Rhizosphere Physical Properties In Micro Ct Images, Natarajan S. Pillai
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The rhizosphere, i.e. the zone of soil immediately surrounding plant roots plays a prominent role in supplying plants with water and nutrients. However, surprisingly little is known about rhizosphere physical properties and how they affect root growth, water and nutrient uptake. The lack of non-invasive and non-destructive imaging techniques necessary to observe living roots growing in undisturbed soil have been a main reason for this shortcoming. Recent advances in synchrotron X-ray micro tomography (CMT) provide the potential to directly observe soil physical properties around living roots in-situ.In this work we develop procedures for assisting scientist to study the soil properties …

Thermal Excitation And Piezoresistive Detection Of Cantilever In-Plane Resonance Modes For Sensing Applications, Luke A. Beardslee, Assim M. Addous, Stephen M. Heinrich, Fabien Josse, Isabelle Dufour, Oliver Brand
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Thermally excited and piezoresistively detected bulk-micromachined cantilevers vibrating in their in-plane flexural resonance mode are presented. By shearing the surrounding fluid rather than exerting normal stress on it, the in-plane mode cantilevers exhibit reduced added fluid mass effects and improved quality factors in a fluid environment. In this letter, different cantilever geometries with in-plane resonance frequencies from 50 kHz to 2.2 MHz have been tested, with quality factors as high as 4200 in air and 67 in water.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment on anthocyanin extraction from red cabbage using water as a solvent. Mashed cabbage was placed in a batch treatment chamber and subjected to PEF (2.5 kV/cm electric field strength; 15 μs pulse width and 50 pulses, specific energy 15.63 J/g). Extracted anthocyanin concentrations (16 to 889 μg/mL) were determined using HPLC. Heat and light stabilities of the control and PEF-treated samples, having approximately the same initial concentrations, were studied. PEF treatments enhanced total anthocyanin extraction in water from red cabbage by 2.15 times with a higher …
In Vitro Analysis Of Auto-Loom Woven Test Patches For Hernia Repair, Bryant Mersereau
In Vitro Analysis Of Auto-Loom Woven Test Patches For Hernia Repair, Bryant Mersereau
All Theses
Hernias are defects in the layers of the abdominal wall that can cause discomfort or pain and lead to serious health problems if left untreated. A significant portion of the world's population is afflicted by hernia formation, and the cost of treating those affected is in the billions of dollars in the US alone. The current best practices for repairing hernias involve the surgical implantation of polymeric meshes over and around the defect site. The mesh, acting as a synthetic replacement for the damaged abdominal wall layers, provides a barrier to further visceral protrusions through the defect, a support framework …
Probing The Mechanisms Of Platelet Adhesion To Adsorbed Plasma Proteins, Balakrishnan Sivaraman
Probing The Mechanisms Of Platelet Adhesion To Adsorbed Plasma Proteins, Balakrishnan Sivaraman
All Dissertations
Despite over three decades of research in blood-material interactions, the biomaterials field has been unsuccessful in developing a truly non-thrombogenic biomaterial. This is due to an incomplete understanding of the factors underlying biomaterial-associated thrombosis, especially the mechanisms mediating the interactions of platelets with the adsorbed plasma protein layer(s) on the implant surface. The work presented here is motivated by the primary goal of delineating these mechanisms, and understanding the platelet receptors involved, as well as the domains/amino acid sequences they bind to in the protein molecules.
It is critical to differentiate between the amount and the conformation of the adsorbed …
Modeling Of Cell Transfer And Process-Induced Cell Damage In Laser-Assisted Cell Direct Writing, Wei Wang
Modeling Of Cell Transfer And Process-Induced Cell Damage In Laser-Assisted Cell Direct Writing, Wei Wang
All Dissertations
Laser-assisted cell direct-write technique has been obtaining more and more attention in different biomaterial direct writing applications. A typical laser-assisted cell direct-write process can be divided into two main stages: the cell droplet ejection and cell droplet landing. The objective of this study is to model the cell mechanical profile during the cell droplet ejection and cell landing and further model the cell damage.
The possible cell damage during the droplet ejection process in laser-assisted cell direct writing may come from two different sources: the phase explosion-induced bubble expansion and the thermoelastic stress wave. The bubble expansion-induced stress wave is …
Microcantilever Dynamics In Liquid Environment Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy When Using Higher-Order Cantilever Eigenmodes, Daniel Kiracofe, Arvind Raman
Microcantilever Dynamics In Liquid Environment Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy When Using Higher-Order Cantilever Eigenmodes, Daniel Kiracofe, Arvind Raman
Birck and NCN Publications
Dynamic atomic force microscopy is currently evolving from a single to a multifrequency instrument for nanoscale imaging often employing higher-order microcantilever eigenmodes for improved resolution and force spectroscopy. In this work the authors study the fundamentals of cantilever dynamics and energy dissipation when soft cantilevers are driven at their second flexural eigenmode and interact with samples in liquid environments. Contrary to the conventional first eigenmode operation, second eigenmode operation in liquids is often dominated by a subharmonic response (e.g., one tap every four drive cycles) and there is an energy transfer to the first eigenmode creating a new channel of …
A Framework For Automatically Repairing Gui Test Suites, Si Huang
A Framework For Automatically Repairing Gui Test Suites, Si Huang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Testing is an effective means for assuring the quality of software. In programs with Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs), event sequences serve as test cases for executing system tests. To aid in the test generation process, researchers have developed methods that automatically derive graph models from GUIs, which can then be traversed to create sequences for testing. Recent advances using these graph models incorporate combinatorial interaction testing sampling techniques to generate longer GUI test cases, which exercise more event interactions and have been shown to improve fault detection. However, because the models extracted are only approximations of the actual event interactions, …
Immunohistochemical Mapping Of Hypoxia In Ischemic Mouse Hindlimb Skeletal Muscle, Emily Deckert
Immunohistochemical Mapping Of Hypoxia In Ischemic Mouse Hindlimb Skeletal Muscle, Emily Deckert
Biomedical Engineering
The study of blood vessel growth and remodeling is a complex endeavor. Hypoxia, the lack of oxygen in a tissue, is known to stimulate angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels), and have little effect on arteriogenesis (the enlargement of existing blood vessels). However, the role of hypoxia in vessel function is unknown, but may be determined using the results and methods developed in this experiment.
Supplied by the bloodstream, oxygen is required by all cells and tissues to remain healthy. If the bloodstream supplying a certain tissue with blood is disrupted, the tissue becomes ischemic, often leading to hypoxia. …
