Glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs) containing aluminum-free borate glasses having the general composition Ag2O-Na2O-CaO-SrO-ZnO- TiO2-B2O3 were evaluated in this work. An initial screening study of sixteen compositions was used to identify regions of glass formation and cement compositions with promising rheological properties. The results of the screening study were used to develop four model borate glass compositions for further study. A second round of rheological experiments was used to identify a preferred GPC formulation for each model glass composition. The model borate glasses containing higher levels of TiO2 (7.5 mol %) …

Passive sampling methods (PSMs) allow the quantification of the freely dissolved concentration (Cfree ) of an organic contaminant even in complex matrices such as sediments. Cfree is directly related to a contaminant's chemical activity, which drives spontaneous processes including diffusive uptake into benthic organisms and exchange with the overlying water column. Consequently, Cfree provides a more relevant dose metric than total sediment concentration. Recent developments in PSMs have significantly improved our ability to reliably measure even very low levels of Cfree . Application of PSMs in sediments is preferably conducted in the equilibrium regime, where freely dissolved concentrations in the …
Tissue Engineering Scaffold Fabrication And Processing Techniques To Improve Cellular Infiltration, Casey Grey
Tissue Engineering Scaffold Fabrication And Processing Techniques To Improve Cellular Infiltration, Casey Grey
Theses and Dissertations
Electrospinning is a technique used to generate scaffolds composed of nano- to micron-sized fibers for use in tissue engineering. This technology possesses several key weaknesses that prevent it from adoption into the clinical treatment regime. One major weakness is the lack of porosity exhibited in most electrospun scaffolds, preventing cellular infiltration and thus hosts tissue integration. Another weakness seen in the field is the inability to physically cut electrospun scaffolds in the frontal plane for subsequent microscopic analysis (current electrospun scaffold analysis is limited to sectioning in the cross-sectional plane). Given this it becomes extremely difficult to associate spatial scaffold …

Study On The Vortex Wake Of An Airfoil Equipped With Flexible Trailing Edge Fringes, Zhengkai He
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
With the inspiration of owl's silent flight, a traditional airfoil S833 equipped with flexible fringes on the trailing edge is investigated through numerical simulation and experiments in a wind tunnel. The newly constructed airfoil is modeled and numerically investigated. An incompressible, 2D and viscous flow solver in the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software FLUENT is utilized to conduct the numerical simulation on the vortex flow feature in the wake of the airfoil. A User Defined Function code was applied to generate the defined motion of flexible fringes. The effects of the flapping frequency of the fringe and the deformation pattern …
Hierarchical Porous Structures Functionalized With Silver Nanoparticles: Adaptation For Antibacterial Applications, Anil Kumar Karumuri
Hierarchical Porous Structures Functionalized With Silver Nanoparticles: Adaptation For Antibacterial Applications, Anil Kumar Karumuri
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
For a large number of applications involving surface interactions, there is an ever growing demand for materials with high specific surface area (surface area to volume ratio). Porous materials and nanomaterials offer higher specific surface area (SSA) each with their respective advantages and disadvantages. This research program is focused on bringing the two approaches together to create truly "hierarchical" materials that combine advantages of both while minimizing their disadvantages. In this study, various carbon based porous geometries were fabricated by grafting carbon nanotubes (CNT) onto highly porous reticulated carbon foams. These structures were further modified by functionalizing metal nanoparticles such …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a relatively young technique in the field of medical imaging. As such, it has yet to be widely implemented for clinical use, despite its promising advantages. However, unlike fMRI-its much bulkier and costly counterpart-fNIRS has yet to be proven as a standalone imaging tool within a clinical setting, particularly that of ophthalmology or physical therapy.
Methods: Ten healthy young adults (23.8 ± 4.8 years) participated in the study. Activation of the visual cortex was achieved utilizing various reversing checkerboard stimuli across three data collection sessions for each participant. Further, activation of the motor cortex …

This study presents novel predictive equations for von Mises stresses and deflection of bones in the frontal and lateral regions of the skull. The equations were developed based on results of a finite element model developed here. The model was validated for frontal and lateral loading conditions with input values mimetic to fall scenarios. Using neural network processing of the information derived from the model achieved R2 values of 0.9990 for both the stress and deflection. Based on the outcome of the fall victims, a threshold von Mises stress of 40.9 to 46.6 MPa was found to indicate skull fracture …

Use Of Vibrotactile Feedback And Stochastic Resonance For Improving Laparoscopic Surgery Performance, Robert Douglas Hoskins
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Vibrotactile feedback, used as sensory substitution for loss of haptic feedback, has been utilized to improve performance in manual control, teleoperation and during minimally invasive surgical tasks. Stochastic resonance (SR), introduced into the human control system as white noise at a sub-threshold level, has shown promise to improve the sensitivity of tactile receptors resulting in enhancement of performance for a variety of manual tracking and sensorimotor tasks. The purpose of this study was to determine if SR could improve performance (accuracy, speed) in a simulated laparoscopic palpation task and to compare it to vibrotactile feedback (VIB). It was hypothesized that …
Design Of Thermal Structures Using Topology Optimization, Joshua D. Deaton
Design Of Thermal Structures Using Topology Optimization, Joshua D. Deaton
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The design of structures subjected to elevated temperature environments has long been an important area of study in the aerospace industry. This is especially true in the modern day, where new problems related to embedded engine aircraft and high temperature exhaust-washed structures present new structural design challenges not found in past applications. In this work, the response of a class of thermal structures whose responses are characterized by significant amounts of restrained expansion, to which exhaust-washed structures belong, are studied. To address the complex design challenges that become evident in these investigations, structural topology optimization is applied due to its …
The Properties Of Property Alignment On The Semantic Web, Michelle Andreen Cheatham
The Properties Of Property Alignment On The Semantic Web, Michelle Andreen Cheatham
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Ontology alignment is an important step in enabling computers to query and reason across the many linked datasets on the semantic web. This is a difficult challenge because the ontologies underlying different linked datasets can vary in terms of subject area coverage, level of abstraction, ontology modeling philosophy, and even language. The alignment approach presented here centers on string similarity metrics. Nearly all ontology alignment systems use a string similarity metric in one form or another, but it seems that the choice of a particular metric is often arbitrary. We begin this dissertation with the most comprehensive survey to date …
End-To-End Classification Process For The Exploitation Of Vibrometry Data, Ashley Nicole Smith
End-To-End Classification Process For The Exploitation Of Vibrometry Data, Ashley Nicole Smith
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Laser vibrometry provides a method to identify running vehicles' unique signatures using non-contact measurements. A vehicle's engine, size, materials, shape, and other attributes affect its vibration signature. To develop the capability to classify and identify these signatures, a robust aided target recognition (AiTR) end-to-end process is evaluated and expanded. The main challenge in classifying a vehicle's vibration signatures is presented by the operating conditions and parameters that vary as a function of sensor, environment, and collection locations on the target, among others. Some of the parameters affecting the vibration signatures include weather, terrain, sensor location, sensor type, and engine speed. …
Flash Hydrolysis Of Microalgae Biomass For Biofuels Intermediates Production, Protein Extraction, And Nutrients Recycle, Jose Luis Garcia Moscoso
Flash Hydrolysis Of Microalgae Biomass For Biofuels Intermediates Production, Protein Extraction, And Nutrients Recycle, Jose Luis Garcia Moscoso
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Microalgae have shown much higher growth rates and productivity when compared to conventional agricultural crops, aquatic plants and tree species, requiring much less land area than other biodiesel feedstock. To harness that potential the hydrothermal liquefaction of algae biomass was studied and a new process called "Flash Hydrolysis" was developed to use water under subcritical conditions, this process capitalizes on the difference in reaction kinetics of algae polymeric components and fractionates proteins in liquid phase in seconds of residence time.
The main objectives for this study are: Analyze the effect of temperature in FH process to maximize the extraction of …
