Rice production is a key indicator of food security and agricultural stability in Southeast Asia, especially among Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries. Despite shared regional goals, disparities in rice production remain, and previous studies mainly rely on descriptive statistics, lacking structured multicriteria decision-making frameworks and computational tools for cross-country comparisons. This study addresses these gaps by proposing an integrated Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)–Python framework to evaluate and rank ASEAN rice production from 2013 to 2022. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most widely used polymers in plastics packaging. However, the increasing demand for PET has created challenges in waste disposal. Previous research has shown that PET can be deconstructed using ammonium hydroxide (CDPET). Microorganisms capable of utilizing the product as a sole carbon source can be converted to single-cell protein (SCP). A custom microbial inactivation unit was developed to ensure the safety and stability of generated SCP. We are reporting the development of a high-performance, non-enzymatic electrochemical biosensor for selective lactate detection, integrating laser-induced graphene (LIG), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) synthesized from poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). The LIG electrode offers a highly porous, conductive scaffold, while electrodeposited AuNPs enhance catalytic activity and signal amplification. The PEDOT-based MIP layer, electropolymerized via cyclic voltammetry, imparts molecular specificity by creating lactate-specific binding sites. Cyclic voltammetry confirmed successful molecular imprinting and enhanced interfacial electron transfer. The resulting LIG/AuNPs/MIP biosensor demonstrated a wide linear detection range from 0.1 µM to 2500 µM, with a sensitivity of 22.42 µA/log(µM) and …

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects over 22 million Americans today. Typically, ADHD is first presented during childhood, the exact cause of ADHD is unknown. Genetic mutations, such as those in the DRD4 gene on chromosome 11, have been linked to ADHD. This gene encodes for dopamine receptor D4, which inhibits adenylyl cyclase, an enzyme involved in cell signaling. A missense mutation in DRD4 could hinder the receptor function, contributing to inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity--core symptoms of ADHD. Harlem Baking Co. (HBC) is a business located in New York City that handmakes "Little Jars of Happiness." Their desserts come in a variety of flavors (from New York cheesecake to chocolate lava cake) and are baked inside reusable Jars. The team was tasked with redesigning their logo and packaging in partnership with Dr. Jeff Binczyk's marketing class, and designed a website, fridge wrap, and AD campaign. HBC was also kind enough to send samples of their desserts for a photoshoot, which resulted in some amazing photos that are currently on display in their current ads.

This research focuses on enhancing the value of coffee waste by converting it into activated carbon for removing Pb²⁺ ions from contaminated water. Coffee grounds were activated with KOH and carbonized at 600°C for 4 h to produce activated carbon (CGAC), then modified with arginine via hydrothermal treatment at 120°C for 48 h to create Arg-CGAC. The adsorbents' chemical and physical properties were analyzed using SEM, FT-IR, BET, and pHpzc methods. Batch experiments revealed that Arg-CGAC exhibited superior Pb2+ adsorption (223.10 mg∙g‒1) compared to CGAC (119.23 mg∙g‒1) under optimal conditions. To develop a cost-effective alternative to noble metal catalysts for photocatalysis, we synthesized a series of bimetallic Co-Ni nanoalloys on core-shelled SiO2@TiO2 nanostructures via a chemical reduction approach. Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica are major foodborne pathogens. Biofilm formation may potentially contribute to product contamination by these pathogens at meat processing facilities. Further, pathogen stress tolerance may vary significantly due to the interactions with the multispecies microbial community at meat plants, which may be affected by processing activity, animal species, and the local selective pressure caused by sanitization practices.

We characterized natural microorganisms collected from floor drains at various areas at three beef plants and two pork plants and analyzed their impact on pathogen sanitizer tolerance.

The diel variations of viruses (< 0.2 μm), picoplankton (0.2-2 μm; heterotrophic bacteria, Synechococcus spp., and picoeukaryotes), and nanoflagellates (2-20 μm; heterotrophic and pigmented nanoflagellates) were examined for 2 days with approximately 4 h of temporal sampling in the spring of 2024 in coastal surface waters of the subtropical western Pacific. The abundance of bacteria did not follow a consistent diel pattern, and viral abundance was positively correlated with bacterial abundance. Synechococcus spp. was found to grow during the light period and with peak abundance at night, exhibiting a remarkably diel pattern; however, the pattern was opposite in picoeukaryotes. Non-invasive electrotherapies offer promising treatments for a wide range of conditions such as pain, headaches, depression, addiction, cognitive decline, wound healing, and drug delivery. However, patient compliance remains low due to the high initial cost, cumbersomeness and inconvenience of existing technology compared to pharmaceuticals. Current electrotherapy devices are often bulky and require users to connect disposable electrodes, initiate programs, and manage charging cycles, which hinders widespread adoption.

This dissertation investigates how food donation policies in New York State influence the recovery, redistribution, and waste of surplus fresh produce, with a focus on fruits and vegetables. Using an interdisciplinary, systems-based approach that integrates system dynamics modeling with qualitative, community-engaged research, the study analyzes the effectiveness and unintended consequences of three major policies: Nourish New York, the Farm to Food Bank tax credit, and the Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling Law.

Mesophotic and deep-sea gorgonian octocorals in the Gulf of Mexico were significantly damaged following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, prompting a major federal investment in developing restoration techniques for these fragile, slow-growing communities. Asexual, in-situ coral propagation offers a biologically viable path for restoration at depth. The mammary microenvironment has been shown to suppress tumor progression by redirecting cancer cells to adopt a normal mammary epithelial progenitor fate in vivo. However, the mechanism(s) by which this alteration occurs has yet to be defined. Here, we test the hypothesis that mitochondrial transfer from normal mammary epithelial cells to breast cancer cells plays a role in this redirection process. We evaluate mitochondrial transfer in 2D and 3D organoids using our unique 3D bioprinting system to produce chimeric organoids containing normal and cancer cells. Anthropogenic activities such as improper waste disposal, excessive fertilizer use, and industrial effluents cause heavy metal contamination in water, soil, and the atmosphere. Herein, the water quality index (WQI) was used to characterize heavy metal (i.e., cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg)) contamination in the Bang Pakong River, Thailand. The complex aromatic structures of synthetic dyes in contaminated water bodies make them difficult to degrade, posing a serious environmental challenge and representing a significant emerging pollutant that warrants urgent intervention. This study evaluated the biodegradation and detoxification potential of a halotolerant, marine-derived fungal strain, Penicillium oxalicum M6A, isolated from the Nigerian coastline, against Indigo carmine (IC) and Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR). This study assessed heavy metal contamination in roadside vegetables (Ipomoea batatas and Moringa oleifera) across five urbanized localities in Bukidnon, Philippines, and evaluated potential human health risks. Metal concentrations (Cd, Cr, Cu, Co, Fe, Mn, and Zn) were analyzed via atomic absorption spectro-photometry and compared against FAO/WHO maximum permissible limits. The results revealed severe contamination, with Mn (575.27–862.17 mg kg-1) and Fe (256.46–706.68 mg kg-1) dominating natural soil mineralogy (Adtuyon series) and anthropogenic inputs. To achieve sustainable development goals, addressing food waste requires evidence-based solutions grounded in a nuanced understanding of waste generation rates and the factors influencing them. This study explores the intricate dynamics of food waste generation in Thai households, encompassing both liquid and solid waste streams. Empirical data were collected from 2,700 diverse households across urban and rural areas over a four-week period. The study revealed an average food waste generation rate of 0.332±0.003 kg per capita per day when liquids were included and 0.228± 0.002 kg per capita per day when liquids were excluded.
