A Study Of The Variation Of The Fluoride Content Of Certain Waters In The Vicinity Of Albuquerque, E. Metz Beahm Jan 1957

A Study Of The Variation Of The Fluoride Content Of Certain Waters In The Vicinity Of Albuquerque, E. Metz Beahm

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

In the first part of 1935, the City of Albuquerque was investigating the possibility of obtaining an additional water supply from the Jemez Mountains, which are about fifty miles to the north of the City. Black and Veatch, consulting engineers for the City, were asked to make a complete study of the problem. The question of fluorides in the water came up because it was known that the fluorides would cause mottled enamel in human teeth when the water was used during childhood, if the content was above 0.9 parts per million by accepted fluorine analysis methods. The question arose …

Hydrolysis Of Sodium Silicofluoride, Frank Arthur Graf Jun 1956

Hydrolysis Of Sodium Silicofluoride, Frank Arthur Graf

Theses

The kinetics of an apparent solubility decrease of commercial sodium fluoride encountered in a piece of equipment designed to produce saturated sodium fluoride solution was Investigated, in order to understand why a consistently saturated solution was not possible to achieve with plain tap water as solvent.

The main impurity, about 1 percent sodium silicofluoride, coats the sodium fluoride crystals, resulting in an equilibrium shift during dissolution of the salt in water; and under certain conditions results in the formation of a protective gel. Therefore, in order to produce a constant strength sodium fluoride solution, this coated impurity must be decomposed …

Composting Coffee Waste, Lawrence James Hickey Jun 1956

Composting Coffee Waste, Lawrence James Hickey

Theses

Disposal of waste, and specifically organic waste, has become a serious problem in such industries as the canning, meat-packing, dairy and other food producing industries. Recently, with the introduction of instant coffee powder, this particular industry now has a waste disposal problem with the resultant coffee residue. Composting or biologically decomposing this waste to yield an organic fertilizer is one of the many ways to solve this problem.

There are no papers in the literature concerning composting of coffee waste and only one paper (65) is available covering studies of high rate composting of garbage and refuse. It is known …

Workshops On Legal Problems Of Atomic Energy, University Of Michigan Law School

Summer Institute on International and Comparative Law

In 1952 the University of Michigan Law School, as a part of its summer session program, offered an Institute entitled "Industrial and Legal Problems of Atomic Energy. " The 1946 Atomic Energy Act, creating a virtually complete government monopoly, was then in effect, and private development of peaceful uses of atomic energy was for the most part merely a gleam in the eyes of a few forward-looking individuals. The 1952 Institute was devoted to the task of obtaining a preview of atomic affairs to come. The speakers on the program could do no more than look forward and speculate on …

A Study Of Gas Porosity In Aluminum Casting Alloys Using Radioactive Hydrogen As A Tracer, Osborne Milton Jan 1956

A Study Of Gas Porosity In Aluminum Casting Alloys Using Radioactive Hydrogen As A Tracer, Osborne Milton

Professional Degree Theses

"A method will be described wherein the absorption of hydrogen by aluminum is evaluated using hydrogen 3 as a tracer element. Results show that hydrogen gas is readily absorbed into the melt when it is injected directly, but is not taken on from the combustion products, that quantities of it are released when the metal freezes, and that the commonly used methods of fluxing with chlorine and nitrogen gas are of value for degassing"--Preface, page iii.

Technical Report Writing, Civilian Personnel Division, Office Of The Chief Of Engineers, Department Of The Army, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

This is a brief manual intended primarily to instruct junior engineering personnel working on civil works for the Corps of Engineers in the proper procedures for preparing reports. Some of the contents were papers delivered at a conference on the use of English in Corps of Engineers reports.

The manual is complicated by the Corps of Engineer’s roles as a military organization and as an organization managing civil public works projects and public facilities and by the special problem of having to answer inquiries of members of Congress.

Shortly before this guide was issued, the Engineer School had issued a …

Survey Of Personnel Practices In Selected Industrial Organizations Of Utah, George R. Clawson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study deals with the factors which were responsible for the origin of personnel functions in a selected group of industrial organizations in the State of Utah. Although material is available concerning the factors which affected the establishment of personnel functions in the United States in general, there is little information regarding these factors in any one region. For this reason, an area study should be of value.

The Development Of Executives, Joseph Ralph Messineo May 1953

The Development Of Executives, Joseph Ralph Messineo

Theses

The ever-increasing trend toward improved industrial efficiency creates the problem of supplying capable executives. The supply of executive manpower in business corporations ever needs replenishing. Expansion of operations, retirements, and other circumstances cause executive demands and vacancies which must be filled. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to analyze and report on what industry is actually doing today to develop executives to meet present and future requirements. Also, it is the author's intent to formulate a comprehensive executive development program that can be adopted with some limitations by industry for the building of an executive reserve.

An Investigation As To The Uses Of The Topographic Map And Improvements Desired By The General Public, George O. Boeckman Jan 1952

An Investigation As To The Uses Of The Topographic Map And Improvements Desired By The General Public, George O. Boeckman

Masters Theses

"The demand for topographic maps from hunters, fishermen, vacationers, professional engineers etc, has been increasing with each passing year. In 1940 people bought some 700,000 copies of topographic maps. In 1946 sales had jumped to well over 2,000,000 copies. Civilian use of these maps by veterans has contributed substantially to the tremendous expansion of demand for maps since World War II. In recent years, the quality of topographic maps has been greatly improved by refinements in methods and by the use of aerial photography in map compilation. This advancement, and an ever-increasing demand from engineers, geologists, and many others for …

Rehabilitation Of Land Stripped For Coal, Richard Matthaei Jan 1952

Rehabilitation Of Land Stripped For Coal, Richard Matthaei

Masters Theses

"The usual connotation of the word rehabilitation as applied to land areas is the restoration of that land to its former efficiency. However, in the spirit of conservation that is essential to our standard of living, the word has begun to have added meaning. In the fullest concept, rehabilitation involves a study of soil characteristics and capabilities, and creation of productive uses of which the land was not capable in its original condition. The true conservationist has an opportunity to make a useful contribution to the future generations of this country. The United States Forestry Service and the United States …
