The Public Health Engineer's Part On A Health Program, Walter Eric Casey Jan 1932

The Public Health Engineer's Part On A Health Program, Walter Eric Casey

Professional Degree Theses

"In this work the Public Health Engineer should not be confused with the Sanitary Engineer as the term is commonly used today. The Sanitary Engineer is primarily a designer or builder. He is, in fact, a civil and hydraulic engineer specializing in a rather restricted field, confined for the most part to works relating to municipal water supply and sewage. The Public Health Engineer on the other hand is primarily a student and worker in the field of public health. The range of his activities is wider, and his training and knowledge are of essentially different character. It is not …

Japan, Van Hoose Smith Jan 1931

Japan, Van Hoose Smith

Professional Degree Theses

"This ore is mined from a quartz vein which is refined by small seams of graphitic clay material, and the walls of the vein consist of a sort of graphitic shaley material. The above graphitic materials break down under treatment into a rather peculiar clay which was called primary colloidal slime. The milling process in use consists of stamp milling followed by the separation into sand and primary slime in Dorr Duplex Classifiers. The primary slime overflow from these classifiers, which is all practically thru 220 mesh, is thickened and treated by flotation. Normally and with a good supply of …

The West Side Sewage Treatment Works Of The Sanitary District Of Chicago, John Edwin Mccauley Jan 1930

The West Side Sewage Treatment Works Of The Sanitary District Of Chicago, John Edwin Mccauley

Professional Degree Theses

"Herein following is a thesis on the West Side Sewage Treatment Works of the Sanitary District of Chicago. I have endeavored to cover a large field in one thesis, but think is giving the material I have, the fundamental points have been covered. The local need of sewage treatment is so involved with county, state, Federal, and even International issues that to write solely of local conditions would be to leave out the main part of the story. So, in writing, I have tried to dover enough of the subject to give the historical facts along with the construction side …

The North Side Sewage Treatment Works Of The Chicago Sanitary District, Floyd Allen Gerard Jan 1930

The North Side Sewage Treatment Works Of The Chicago Sanitary District, Floyd Allen Gerard

Professional Degree Theses

"My aim in writing this thesis has been to give a clear and concise picture of the Plant, its construction, operating experiences, results and the need for sewage treatment. For this reason, I have incorporated much information, which, while not dealing directly with the subject in hand, is closely allied to it and forms a very necessary background. As the Sanitary District considers its actual operating results confidential, I have refrained from including them. Much useful information can be derived from a careful study of the photographs and drawings included"--page ii.

A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Missouri Vegetables And Soils, Charles Jackson Potter Jan 1930

A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Missouri Vegetables And Soils, Charles Jackson Potter

Masters Theses

"Investigations have shown that the iodine content of vegetables, water, and soils has a direct relationship to the goiter incidence of a given region. A few countries, notably New Zealand and Switzerland have made a rather complete survey. In the United States, South Carolina has made the most progress in this direction.

At the present time there are no available records of vegetable and soil analysis for iodine in Missouri. Hunze determined the amount of iodine in waters in Missouri. The connection of his results with the author's results will be seen later.

The present investigation was carried out at …

A Few Notes From The Sanitary Engineering Field, Ronald Davies Ward Jan 1928

A Few Notes From The Sanitary Engineering Field, Ronald Davies Ward

Professional Degree Theses

"This paper, it is felt, may appear to be a somewhat disconnected discussion of a few points that have come to the writer's attention from his limited experience and practice in the field of Sanitary Engineering. It has not been the intention, however, to provide a discussion of continuity which would take the reader from the ground up through the process involved in the design and construction of any particular structure, system, or plant; but rather is it to be considered the writer's attempt - although probably a somewhat feeble one - to set forth in a note-book, as it …

The Economics Of Engineering Testing, Gerald Franklin Rackett

Professional Degree Theses

"...It becomes the province of the engineer in his functions of designing and building the various units so prominent in our contemporary civilization, to guild with due regard for economic and mortal safety. To do these things he must have reliable data of the behavior and characteristics of those materials with which he works. The data can only be obtained by the systematic testing of engineering materials and the articulated units and fabricated structures that are built with them"--Safety, page 7-8.

A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Representative Missouri Waters, Edmond Carl Hunze Jan 1927

A Study Of The Iodine Content Of Representative Missouri Waters, Edmond Carl Hunze

Masters Theses

"Investigations have shown that the iodine content of natural waters bears a direct relationship to the goiter incidence of a given region. A number of the states have analysed [sic] their water for this constituent in the development of this hypothesis. A search of the literature revealed the fact that with the exception of two instances the iodine content of Missouri water had not been determined. Since in certain regions of Missouri there is quite a prevalence of goiter, it was deemed important to determine the iodine content of Missouri waters. It was believed that such information would be a …

Accident Prevention In Cement Plants, Edward Rees Abbott Jan 1924

Accident Prevention In Cement Plants, Edward Rees Abbott

Bachelors Theses

"The cement industry as a whole took up accident prevention work along with the pioneers. With the organization of the Portland Cement Association, a Bureau of Accident Prevention was formed. This Accident Prevention Bureau, by sending out literature, holding competitions, collecting and tabulating results of accidents collected from every cement manufacturer and affiliating with National Safety Council as the Cement Section, has made rapid strides each year, until today it is doubtful if any other branch of manufacturers can show more improvement in accident records than the cement industry. In spite of their marked improvements each year, there were 47 …

The Movement Of Ground Water And Its Relation To The Drainage Of Irrigated Lands, Ernest O. Larson Jun 1923

The Movement Of Ground Water And Its Relation To The Drainage Of Irrigated Lands, Ernest O. Larson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One needs but to review the history of the irrigated projects of the West to see clearly the importance of drainage. Since the passing of the Reclamation Act in 1902, the construction of drainage work by the United States Reclamation Service on seventeen projects located in thirteen western states represents about 12 percent of the expenditures from the Reclamation Fund. The portion for drainage has been spent during the last few years. This work has required an annual expenditure of about $1,000,000 or a total of $8,000,000 to July, 1922(1). The work completed is estimated to have reclaimed …

Land Drainage In Central Iowa, Ernst Lorenze Chamberlain Jan 1916

Land Drainage In Central Iowa, Ernst Lorenze Chamberlain

Professional Degree Theses

"The problems encountered in land drainage are comparatively simple when seen from an engineering point of view. Most problems do not require a fine scientific or mathematical analysis but are rather questions to be decided by good judgment or practical common sense. The most difficult problems encountered are financial, legal and political, therefore, in this paper considerable attention is paid to the Iowa drainage law, facts learned from practical drainage men and to the organization and operation of the different financing systems for drainage"--page 1.

Two Lincoln (Nebraska) Typhoid Fever Epidemics Of 1911 And 1912., Herbert H. Waite

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

On August 29, 1912, I was requested by the Board of Health of the city of Lincoln to make an investigation to determine if possible the origin and cause of an outbreak of a disease reported as typhoid fever which was then prevailing. This outbreak was said to be most prevalent in one particular portion of the city and consequently attention was turned to that portion. Of the cases reported an investigation was made of over 60 individuals and after considering all the probable causes for the majority of those affected the conclusion was reached that all could be logically …

Modern Cyanide Practice, Harvey Edson Smith Jan 1910

Modern Cyanide Practice, Harvey Edson Smith

Bachelors Theses

"It is noticable sic that about all of the recent improvements in cyanide practise sic have been along mechanical rather than chemical lines. the use of oxidizers such as air, ozone, sodium peroxide, etc., the use of the salts of lead, and even the addition of a coating of lead to the zinc shavings in the extractor boxes were all recommended when the process was first advocated but sometimes for different reasons. In the early days of the process the addition of hypochlorites, alkaline persulphates, and the use of mercuric cyanide was also investigated but has not proven satisfactory owing …

Interoceanic Canal Projects, Frank W. Wilson

Professional Degree Theses

"The construction of a canal to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans has been discussed since the discovery of the New World and the whole world has only been waiting until some feasible and economical plan should be offered by which this construction could be made.

The narrow neck of land lying between the continents of North America and South America seems especially adapted to this purpose and has for years tempted exploring parties thither to seek for a practicable canal route. Of late years however another scheme has been proposed which surpasses in magnitude and in economy as well, …
