Performance Evaluation Of A Highway Embankment Constructed Using Waste Foundry Sand, Barry K. Partridge, James E. Alleman Jan 1998

Performance Evaluation Of A Highway Embankment Constructed Using Waste Foundry Sand, Barry K. Partridge, James E. Alleman

JTRP Technical Reports

Over 9 million Mg of waste foundry sands (WFS) are produced annually in the United States as a by-product of the metal casting industry. The majority of WFS are deposited in restricted or sanitary waste landfills. Considerable savings is available to the metal casting industry through the development of reuse applications for their WFS and generators are often willing to provide WFS to a job site at no cost to the end user. Laboratory investigations have indicated that WFS from ferrous foundries can provide the necessary engineering properties for a highway embankment and that the MicrotoxTM bioassay test can be …

Identification And Quantification Of Radionuclides In Coal Ash, James E. Alleman, Franklyn M. Clikeman, Thomas Skronski Jan 1998

Identification And Quantification Of Radionuclides In Coal Ash, James E. Alleman, Franklyn M. Clikeman, Thomas Skronski

JTRP Technical Reports

One of the important environmental issues raised recently in regard to coal ash reuse for highway construction purposes (e.g., embankment development) is that of worker, and public, exposure to radiation which might possibly be emitted by these types of residuals. Radiation emission is, in fact, a natural phenomenon for most materials, both natural and man-made, but in the case of coal ash residuals the process of combustion produces an inevitable concentration of radionuclides from the original virgin coal. INDOT’s corresponding environmental concern consequently focuses on the following basic question: does this magnification of radionuclides found within these coal ash residuals …

Multiresolution Detection Of Spiculated Lesions In Digital Mammograms, Sheng Liu, Charles F. Babbs, Edward Delp Jan 1998

Multiresolution Detection Of Spiculated Lesions In Digital Mammograms, Sheng Liu, Charles F. Babbs, Edward Delp

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper we present a novel multiresolution scheme for the detection of spiculated lesions in digital mammograms. First, a multiresolution representation of the original mammogram is obtained using a linear phase nonseparable 2-D wavelet transform. A set of features is then extracted at each resolution in the wavelet pyramid for every pixel. This approach addresses the difficulty of predetermining the neighborhood size for feature extraction to characterize objects that may appear in different sizes. Detection is performed from the coarsest resolution to the finest resolution using a binary tree classifier. This top-down approach requires less computation by starting with …

Thermodynamic Modeling And Analysis Of Human Stress Responses, Satish C. Boregowda

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A novel approach based on the second law of thermodynamics is developed to investigate the psychophysiology and quantify human stress level. Two types of stresses (thermal and mental) are examined. A Unified Stress Response Theory (USRT) is developed under the new proposed field of study called Engineering Psychophysiology. The USRT is used to investigate both thermal and mental stresses from a holistic (human body as a whole) and thermodynamic viewpoint. The original concepts and definitions are established as postulates which form the basis for thermodynamic approach to quantify human stress level. An Objective Thermal Stress Index (OTSI) is developed by …

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The toxicity of common compounds of lead, cadmium and zinc was evaluated in waters similar to that found in the world's largest lead producing area in Missouri. Static, acute toxicity tests were performed using fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and water fleas (Daphnia magna) respectively. Test organisms were subjected to varying amounts of sulfide, carbonate, chloride and sulfate salts of lead, zinc and cadmium mixed in hard, alkaline waters typical to this region. Median lethal concentrations were calculated using nominal versus measured metal concentrations. Measured metal concentrations included four different metal fractionation (extraction/filtration) techniques at different pH …

Metabolic Inhibition Of A Toluene-Enriched Microbial Population Due To Lead (Pb2+): Verification Of A Free Metal Ion Toxicity Model, Patrick J. S. Marbas Dec 1997

Metabolic Inhibition Of A Toluene-Enriched Microbial Population Due To Lead (Pb2+): Verification Of A Free Metal Ion Toxicity Model, Patrick J. S. Marbas

Theses and Dissertations

A dissolved oxygen probe and an ion specific electrode were used to study the lead-induced metabolic inhibition in a toluene-enriched microbial population. Predicted toxicity values were compared to the actual toxicity responses using a free metal ion toxicity model (TM) which linked metabolic inhibition with lead activity. Experimentally derived values for the model parameters (lead activity and a lead distribution coefficient) were used in the TM. It was postulated that cellular metabolism is disrupted by the conformational changes to the cell's plasma membrane produced by lead ion adsorption. The predicted toxicity values were higher than the actual toxicity response. This …

Pressure Impulses During Microsecond Laser Ablation, Hanqun Shangguan, Lee W. Casperson, Scott A. Prahl Dec 1997

Pressure Impulses During Microsecond Laser Ablation, Hanqun Shangguan, Lee W. Casperson, Scott A. Prahl

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The collapse of laser-induced cavitation bubbles creates acoustic transients within the surrounding medium and also pressure impulses to the ablation target and light-delivery fiber during microsecond laser ablation. The impulses are investigated here with time-resolved flash photography, and they are found to occur whether or not the light-delivery fiber is in contact with the target. We demonstrate that the impulses depend primarily on the energy stored in the cavitation bubble. They are not directly dependent on the mode of light delivery (contact versus noncontact), and they are also not directly correlated to the other acoustic transients. The pressure impulses do …

Energy Needs During Disasters: Workshop Summary Report, Florida Solar Energy Center, Gerard Ventre Nov 1997

Energy Needs During Disasters: Workshop Summary Report, Florida Solar Energy Center, Gerard Ventre

FSEC Energy Research Center®

When natural disasters, such as hurricanes, earthquakes and floods, occur, thousands of people can be left without homes, electrical power, communications, potable water, and food storage capabilities. Adequate electrical power is imperative for both disaster relief operations and community rebuilding. However, the disaster may have disrupted the commercial power supply to a community, requiring disaster relief agencies to rely on alternative sources of power. Photovoltaic-powered equipment provides electrical power which is renewable, quiet, and safe, and which can be used for many essentials of disaster relief efforts, such as refrigeration, communications and lighting. However, at present, photovoltaic (PV) technology is …

Accuracy Of Irrigation Efficiency Estimates, A. J. Clemmens, Charles M. Burt Nov 1997

Accuracy Of Irrigation Efficiency Estimates, A. J. Clemmens, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Evaluation of actual irrigation system performance should rely on an accurate hydrologic water balance over the area considered. In a companion paper, water uses are categorized as consumptive or nonconsumptive, and beneficial or nonbeneficial. Real performance is based on water uses over a specified period of time, rather than observation of a single irrigation event (with associate potential, but not yet actual, consumptive and/or beneficial uses). Once the components in the water balance have been determined, it is shown that the accuracy of irrigation performance parameters can be determined from the accuracy of the components in the water balance, using …

Spinal Cord Stimulation For Chronic Pain Management: Towards An Expert System, Kenneth M. Alo, Richard Alo, Andre De Korvin, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 1997

Spinal Cord Stimulation For Chronic Pain Management: Towards An Expert System, Kenneth M. Alo, Richard Alo, Andre De Korvin, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Chronic pain is a serious health problem affecting millions of people worldwide. Currently, spinal cord simulation is one of the most effective methods of easing the chronic pain. For most patients, a careful selection of weak electric currents enables to drastically decrease the pain level. The first devices offered only a few possible regimes, and it was possible to choose an appropriate regime simply by exhaustive search. Continuous engineering progress leads to more and more flexible devices that offer a wide variety of millions of possible simulation regimes. With this variety, it is no longer possible to test all of …
