Are Cycles Of Neural Activity The Algorithm Of The Brain?, Edwin Omondi Onyango
Are Cycles Of Neural Activity The Algorithm Of The Brain?, Edwin Omondi Onyango
Computer Science Senior Theses
We propose that precisely timed neural activity cycles can serve as structural primitives for memory and computation in a system that exhibits associative learning like the brain. Inspired by biologically grounded mechanisms such as calcium-dependent plasticity, spike-timing-dependent learning, and phase-sensitive excitability, we construct a spiking neural network model in which repeated temporal coincidences drive the formation of self-sustaining activity loops. These cycles, once formed, persist as dynamic memory traces: not stored as static weights, but as reverberating patterns that replay in time when these loops are restarted. We show that noise alone fails to induce stable structure, but even sparse, …
Detection And Mitigation Of Out-Of-Band Channel Wormhole Attack In Wireless Network Using Propagation Delay, Harry May
Doctoral Dissertations
Wireless networks, susceptible to a range of attacks due to their simplicity and ease of evasion, face a significant threat from control data attacks, notably the elusive wormhole attack. Detecting and mitigating such attacks poses challenges, particularly in the absence of a digital signature. This dissertation introduces an innovative approach that utilizes the propagation delay associated with malicious nodes’ timing characteristics for detection, employing the Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) algorithm as its foundation. The inherent propagation delay in the AODV protocol is calculated for each node link along the entire communication path, offering a distinctive timing method that provides …

Design And Optimization Of Low-Loss, High-Gain Metamaterial-Based Log-Periodic Dipole Array Antenna For Full Ka-Band Coverage, Mohamed El Moniar, Ahmed Abd El Hady, Yasser Ismail, Nihal Areed
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This work describes a microstrip log-periodic dipole array (MLPDA) antenna that uses metamaterials and operates across the whole Ka-band. The suggested MLPDA antenna layout provides a wide bandwidth with fewer dipole elements than traditional MLPDA antennas while maintaining the same resonance frequencies. To reduce size while covering a wide operational spectrum, the antenna design includes bending dipoles as radiating elements, as well as an incomplete ground plane. Furthermore, the proposed MLPDA antenna’s energy loss has been reduced while boosting its signal strength (gain) by inserting a metamaterial-based structure in front of it at a certain distance and on the same …

Biomaterials are increasingly used as implants in the body, but they often elicit tissue reactions due to the immune system recognizing them as foreign bodies. These reactions typically involve the activation of innate immunity and the initiation of an inflammatory response, which can persist as chronic inflammation, causing implant failure. To reduce these risks, various strategies have been developed to modify the material composition, surface characteristics, or mechanical properties of biomaterials. Moreover, bioactive materials have emerged as a new class of biomaterials that can induce desirable tissue responses and form a strong bond between the implant and the host tissue. …

Evaluation Of Schoenoplectus Californicus In An Artificial System For E. Coli Removal, Kimia Ahmadiyehyazdi
Masters Theses (Archived)
Green technologies and nature-based solutions like constructed wetlands have be come more popular due to their environmentally friendly approach to remediation, low cost of construction, and maintenance. Also, they have shown efficiency in removing a wide range of contaminants. However, choosing a suitable aquatic plant for this system is one of the questions that should be answered wisely. Schoenoplectus californicus– Giant Bulrush is an aquatic plant that was tested in this controlled constructed wetland, and the final concentration of the targeted microbial contamination, which is E. coli, was reduced remarkably. Also, for this study, soil was removed from the …
Removal Of Diisopropylamine From Water Using Ultraviolet- And Thermal-Activated Persulfate Degradation, Eric Soliz
Removal Of Diisopropylamine From Water Using Ultraviolet- And Thermal-Activated Persulfate Degradation, Eric Soliz
Masters Theses (Archived)
UV light-activated persulfate degradation of diisopropylamine (DIPA) was explored as a means for improving water quality in product water derived from oil and natural gas produced water. A set of temperature swing solvent extraction (TSSE) tests was conducted to investigate the effect of varying ratios of DIPA to feed ratios on water recovery and conductivity and also to reinforce available data suggesting that TSSE may remove saline ions from synthetic produced water enough to improve water quality sufficient enough at sufficient quantities enough for reuse. TSSE may result in residual DIPA remaining in the product water. A three-part test to …

Development And Evaluation Of A Simple Human Body Link Model Considering The Degrees-Of-Freedom Of Shoulders, Mizuki Takeda, Yuki Saito, Kaiji Sato
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
Modeling of the human body is widely utilized in the field of human–robot interaction, warranting the development of a simple model to measure and recognize the human body movements. To this end, a two-dimensional (2D) human body link model in the sagittal plane has been used to represent the human body with rotating joints and links connecting these joints. The joint positions can be determined by using the coordinates of a limited number of points on the links and estimated using a few sensor outputs when the links are of constant length. However, models with constant link lengths may result …

Load Forecasting And Modeling For Power System, Han Guo
Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations
Accurate load forecasting and modeling play a pivotal role in ensuring the stability, reliability, and economic efficiency of modern power systems. With the increasing integration of renewable energy sources, distributed energy resources, and demand-side management strategies, power systems are becoming more dynamic and complex, making traditional load forecasting methods inadequate. This dissertation introduces two novel approaches to address the challenges associated with day-ahead load forecasting and load modeling.
First, a Diffusion Model-Based Probabilistic Day-Ahead Load Forecasting (PDALF) Framework is proposed to enhance the accuracy and robustness of load forecasting. By employing a conditional denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM), the framework, …

Multi-Modal Sensor Fusion Of Radar And Lidar For Enhanced Navigation In Obstacle-Occluded Environments, Kyler Ashton Farrar
Theses and Dissertations
Multi-sensor fusion is a practical and well-researched methodology to combine a variety of incoming sensory data into an enhanced digital representation of a real-world environment. A typical use-case for multi-sensor fusion is the combination of LiDAR and RADAR data to obtain simultaneous 3D positioning and velocity measurements for a particular RoI (Region of Interest). This study investigates LiDAR/RADAR sensor fusion for enhanced navigation information when placed in obstacle-occluded environments such as highly vegetated areas. Specifically, a novel fusion-map approach is designed and evaluated for use with a LiDAR/RADAR sensor suite to produce a fused cost map to determine optimal and …

Removal Of Harmful Algal Bloom Toxin, Microcystin-Lr Via Graphene Coated Polymers, Justin Douglas Puhnaty
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates a novel 3D-printed graphene-coated polymer (GCP) for the removal of Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a harmful cyanotoxin produced during harmful algal blooms (HABs). While graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) exhibit high adsorption capacity, their powdered form limits practical application. To address this, GnPs were coated onto 3D-printed poly(lactic acid) (PLA) substrates, enabling enhanced handling for field deployment. Surface characterization using laser confocal microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed GnP distribution and coating uniformity. Batch adsorption experiments revealed pseudo-second-order kinetics, a maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of 596 μg/g, and adsorption behavior best described by the Langmuir isotherm. Statistical analysis and comparison …

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
From self-driving cars navigating city streets to all-terrain vehicles tackling rugged landscapes, recent leaps in robotic autonomy due to fast pace development in deep learning are reshaping how machines interact with the real world. However, autonomy in the aquatic environment is still limited, due to difficulty in testing and unavailability of realistic simulation environments.
In this project, we aim to create an automated system that simplifies the processes of creating synthetic datasets for marine robots navigation training tasks. We achieved this through a land cover map controlled terrain generation. Our goal is to provide an automatic terrain generation system that …
Computational Complexity Of Soundness Verification For Neural Networks, Scott Sirri
Computational Complexity Of Soundness Verification For Neural Networks, Scott Sirri
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Neural networks are an increasingly ubiquitous tool in systems of varying complexity across a range of domains. While these tools can be used to learn and predict complex functions, their opaque nature limits the scope of their acceptable applications. In particular, a lack of performance guarantees means that they are unsuitable for safety-critical applications such as self-driving cars and scheduling systems. Neural networks trained to solve NP-complete problems, in particular, are unlikely to be able to solve the problem exactly. However, a weaker soundness guarantee may be sufficient for some systems, e.g., that positive instances of the problem may be …
Transfer Learning For Temporal Logic Objectives, Lucas M. Santana Rovira
Transfer Learning For Temporal Logic Objectives, Lucas M. Santana Rovira
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Reinforcement learning algorithms can enable autonomous systems to learn the control skills needed to accomplish a task specified by a linear temporal logic formula. However, they cannot be transferred to a new task, even when the two are very similar. For each new task, the policy must be redesigned from scratch, which is a common limitation of existing reinforcement learning methods for temporal logic tasks. A proposed solution to this problem leverages the similarity between past and new tasks to reuse already learned control skills to accomplish the new task, with minimal or no retraining.
Rather than learning a single …

Blast injuries and subclinical effects are of significant concern among those Service Members (SMs) participating in military operations and tactical trainings. Studies of SMs repeatedly exposed during training find concussion-like symptomology with transient decrements in neurocognitive performance, and alterations in blood biomarkers. How prior mild TBI (mTBI) history interacts with low-level blast (LLB) exposure, however, remains unexplored, which we investigate in the present study, to identify interindividual biomarker changes from LLB exposures influenced by prior history of mTBI.
Multi-Modal Mri For The Pre-Clinical Evaluation Of Hiv-Linked Changes In The Central Nervous System, Gabriel Gauthier
Multi-Modal Mri For The Pre-Clinical Evaluation Of Hiv-Linked Changes In The Central Nervous System, Gabriel Gauthier
Theses & Dissertations
Though the inception of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) has fundamentally changed the life expectancy of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients, accessibility and outcomes vary enormously along demographic lines. Even for people living with HIV (PLWH) with perfect access and adherence to anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs), modern treatment plans are fundamentally unable to secure complete viral remission for patients. The cause of this perpetual infection is the persistence of viral reservoirs in the central nervous system (CNS), hidden beyond the reach of modern ARVs, leaving patients to deal with lifelong medication side-effects and risks of developing HIV-associated neurodegenerative disorders (HAND). Despite improving outcomes …

Opmed Seal: Engineering A Rapid-Response Biodegradable Device For Hemorrhage Control And Infection Prevention In Abdominal Trauma, Paula M. Cabrera, Wesley Stephen Murphy
Honors Theses
Abdominal gunshot wounds are amongst the deadliest injuries encountered in combat and remote emergency settings. For military medics and first responders, the challenge lies in controlling internal bleeding and preventing infection before patients can reach surgical care-often within a narrow window of time known as the “golden hour”. Currently available field treatments are either too slow, not designed for internal wounds, or fail to provide antimicrobial protection. To address this gap, our team developed OpMed Seal: a compact, dual-syringe delivery system that deploys a biodegradable, antibiotic-infused hydrogel directly into abdominal injuries. The system is designed for rapid hemorrhage control, localized …

The primary significance of harnessing power from clean and renewable sources lies in the fact that numerous rural areas are far from the utility system. Among the renewable energy technologies catering to power needs in residential areas is the solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Despite the potential of PV technology and the abundant sun radiation exposure in Hurghada, Egypt, there is a lack of empirical studies evaluating the feasibility of off-grid power production using this system. A notable aspect of this study is the consideration of the discharge rate of the battery for sizing the off-grid system, involving the distribution of …

Computational Models Of Vocal Fold Lesions: Analysis Of Fluid-Structure Interaction, Manoela Rocha Neves
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The biomechanical and aerodynamic behaviors of the vocal folds (VFs) during phonation are heavily influenced by their structural composition and pathological changes. These conditions can induce localized stiffening that disrupts vibratory symmetry and alters airflow resistance. Previous research has lacked the integration of VF lesions in computational simulations using anatomically accurate models, limiting the understanding of their effects in phonation and potential contribution to voice disorders. Addressing this gap, this thesis develops a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model of a realistic two-layered VF structure with lesions, comparing airflow patterns, structural deformations, and vibration profiles in both healthy and diseased cases.

The Role Of Piezo1 In Mediating Chondrocyte Cell Signaling And Senescence, Sophie Gretler Paradi
The Role Of Piezo1 In Mediating Chondrocyte Cell Signaling And Senescence, Sophie Gretler Paradi
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Osteoarthritis (OA), the leading cause of disability, is driven by articular cartilage degeneration and inflammation. Mechanosensitive ion channels PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 have been implicated in OA progression via calcium signaling in chondrocytes. This study investigates the role of conditional Piezo channel knockout (cKO) in modulating calcium signaling and senescence in OA, particularly under the supra-physiologic inflammatory condition of a high-fat diet (HFD). Using calcium imaging, we found that Piezo1 cKO and dual Piezo1/2 cKO significantly reduced Yoda1-induced calcium signaling, while Piezo2 cKO alone had no effect. Under HFD conditions, Piezo1 cKO showed a non-significant trend toward reduced calcium influx, potentially …

Partially Supervised Reinforcement Learning For Gps-Denied Navigation, Ethan Weilheimer
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Navigating dynamic environments is a key challenge for autonomous agents, yet most existing research focuses on 3D settings or settings where the agent has full access to relevant semantics. In this work, we propose a learning framework for aerial navigation in the presence of changing dynamics and limited positional information. Specifically, we consider a drone navigation task where a drone at one time has access to GPS location information, which it has now lost and needs to navigate in the same area but at a future time with no GPS signal and differing transition dynamics. To address this, we introduce …

On September 11, 2023, Storm Daniel unleashed unprecedented rainfall over the Wadi Derna watershed, triggering one of the most devastating floods in modern history, striking Derna, a coastal city in Libya. This study reconstructs the disaster using an integrated modeling approach that combines satellite imagery, hydrologic, hydraulic, and geotechnical simulations, machine learning, eyewitness accounts, and digital elevation data to assess the impact of cascading dam failures. Our findings reveal that the region’s dams, even if structurally sound, would have provided minimal protection against the extreme runoff. However, their failure unleashed a destructive surge wave, amplifying the disaster’s magnitude and devastation. …
