Sovia: Sonification Of Visual Interactive Art, Lauryn Gayhardt
Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses
Therapeutic Computational Creativity is an emerging domain that challenges us to explore applications of Computational Creativity systems to mental health and wellness. This work presents SOVIA, an interactive system that endows Claude Monet’s art with responsive auditory experiences. SOVIA uses computer vision trained on Monet’s artwork to take the user “into the painting.'' When the user interacts with a digital version of Monet's landscapes, their mouse positions are mapped to sounds that artistically represent the objects that the user is currently exploring in the art. These interactive musical journeys have the potential to make classical art more captivating for modern …
Multiple Ways To Implement And Infer Sentience, Nicolas Rouleau, Michael Levin
Multiple Ways To Implement And Infer Sentience, Nicolas Rouleau, Michael Levin
Animal Sentience
Segundo-Ortin & Calvo’s (S&C’s) thorough review of “plant neurobiology” presents evidence supporting the possibility of plant sentience. They make a compelling case that plants anticipate, assess risk, cooperate, mimic, and pursue goals, as do their animal counterparts. S&C point out that there is a double standard: behavioural patterns associated with subjective experiences in humans are considered valid for inferring cognition in non-human animals but not in diverse other systems including plants. We argue that cognitive functions, including sentience, can potentially be achieved by very different systems and their disparate substrates. We offer some context from the basal cognition literature and …

Mitigating Landslide Hazards In Qena Governorate Of Egypt: A Gis-Based Neutrosophic Paprika Approach, Nabil M. Abdelaziz, Safa Al-Saeed
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
This paper presents a novel approach to landslide susceptibility assessment in the Qena Governorate, Egypt, integrating the neutrosophic Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) method, the Potentially All Pairwise RanKings of all possible Alternatives (PAPRIKA), and the ArcGIS weighted overlay technique. The research focuses on the quantification and prioritization of eight criteria: slope, aspect, proximity to road, soil type, proximity to river, land cover, elevation, and Lithology. These factors are evaluated under the uncertainty and indeterminacy of the neutrosophic environment by employing the PAPRIKA method. The results of the analysis are visualized and interpreted using ArcGIS weighted overlay, offering spatially explicit insights into …

In our built environment, societal production of energy and clean water is inextricably linked to the natural resources from which they are derived. Acknowledgement and consideration of the coupling of energy, water, and the environment (the energy–water–environment nexus) will be critical to a sustainable future. This is particularly true as we transition away from historical energy sources (e.g., coal, petroleum, natural gas) and into the widespread adaptation of renewable energy (RE) sources (e.g., solar, wind, geothermal, hydro, bioenergy) as a strategy to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and consequently slow global climate change. This transition is fraught with both challenges and …

The amount of antibiotics and personal care products entering local sewage systems and ultimately natural waters is increasing and raising concerns about long-term human health effects. We developed an adsorptive photocatalyst, Cu0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles, utilizing co-precipitation and calcination with melamine, and quantified its efficacy in removing paraben and oxytetracycline (OTC). During melamine calcination, Cu0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 recrystallized, improving material crystallinity and purity for the adsorptive–photocatalytic reaction. Kinetic experiments showed that all four parabens and OTC were removed within 120 and 45 min. We found that contaminant adsorption and reaction …

Optimizing The Membrane-Assisted Recovery Of Solids (Mars) Technology For Nutrient Removal And Recovery From Concentrated Waste Streams, Ben Yamin Hoque
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The effective management of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, in decentralizedwastewater treatment environments is a pressing challenge. These nutrients pose significant risks to the environment and public health when discharged into water bodies, while their recovery and reuse can help alleviate nutrient shortages in various industries, including agriculture. Conventional biological treatment methods used in centralized facilities are not suitable for decentralized systems due to operational complexities and space limitations. Chemical treatment mechanisms, such as adsorption, ion exchange, precipitation, and air-stripping, offer potential solutions but are accompanied by challenges like high costs and logistical issues. Therefore, finding a sustainable and …

Magnetic Softness Tuned Superparamagnetic Nanoparticles For Highly Efficient Cancer Theranostics, Jie Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided magnetic nanofluid hyperthermia (MNFH) using iron oxide based superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPNPs) has recently attracted considerable attention as a treatment modality for cancer theranostics, because MRI-guided MNFH can allow for diagnosis, therapeutics, and prognosis simultaneously using the same administrated magnetic nanofluid agent. However, several primary limiting factors: (1) insufficient AC magnetic heating induction (specific loss power/intrinsic loss power, SLP/ILP) at the biologically safe and physically tolerable range of AC magnetic field (HAC,safe: fappl × Happl < 3.0 ~ 5.0×109 A·m-1·s-1), (2) low r2- relaxivity directly related to the low resolution of …

Theses and Dissertations
Conceptual design and preliminary safety analysis of a proposed helium-cooled Micro Nuclear reactor In ONe megawatt (MINION) thermal output is done through three-dimensional computational analysis. Compared with the conventional high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGR) that use tri-structural or bi-structural isotropic (TRISO or BISO) fuel particles, MINION uses traditional clad fuel pellets. This greatly simplifies the core design and allows for a substantially more compact design thanks to the fuel’s signif-icantly higher U-235 atom density. Uranium carbide (UC) enriched up to 19.75% in U-235 is used as fuel. In the power-flattened design, U-235 enrichment varies radially between 19.75% and 10.5% in …

Co-Activation Of The Diaphragm And External Intercostal Muscles Through An Adaptive Closed-Loop Respiratory Pacing Controller, Rabeya Zinnat Adury, Ricardo Siu, Ranu Jung
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Introduction: Respiratory pacing is a promising alternative to traditional mechanical ventilation that has been shown to significantly increase the survival and quality of life after the neural control of the respiratory system has been compromised. However, current pacing approaches to achieve adequate ventilation tend to target only the diaphragm without pacing external intercostal muscles that are also activated during normal inspiration. Furthermore, the pacing paradigms do not allow for intermittent sighing, which carries an important physiological role. We hypothesized that simultaneous activation of the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles would improve the efficiency of respiratory pacing compared to diaphragm stimulation …

Sclera collagen fiber microstructure and mechanical behavior are central to eye physiology and pathology. They are also complex, and are therefore often studied using modeling. Most models of sclera, however, have been built within a conventional continuum framework. In this framework, collagen fibers are incorporated as statistical distributions of fiber characteristics such as the orientation of a family of fibers. The conventional continuum approach, while proven successful for describing the macroscale behavior of the sclera, does not account for the sclera fibers are long, interwoven and interact with one another. Hence, by not considering these potentially crucial characteristics, …
