The growing demand for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is driven by their operational convenience, cost-effectiveness, availability, and adaptability to various scenarios. In energy-constrained environments, optimizing energy consumption and ensuring a continuous power supply for UAVs is crucial for mission success. The objective of this thesis is to address this issue by integrating energy-aware motion planning and charge scheduling for UAVs by utilizing a charger hosted on an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), whose rendezvous locations and routes are jointly computed to minimize overall energy consumption.

Anaerobic co-digestion (Co-AD) of poultry litter (PL) and wheat straw (WS) for sustainable waste management and simultaneously renewable bioenergy generation was improved by advanced technologies including micro-aeration (MA), biochar addition (BC), nanoparticles supplementation (NP) and their integrations. Response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were used for the process modeling and optimization. First, a method by gradually increasing OLR was developed for the start-up of Co-AD of PL and WS in an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR), with a continuous daily biogas production of (13.06 ± 0.21) L and methane content (MC) of (54.38 ± 0.53) % observed. …

Groundwater quality in Nebraska is threatened by non-point source contributions of nitrate-nitrogen, primarily by agricultural systems. Intensive crop and livestock production that neglects the value of manure in crop fertility plans can contribute to soil degradation and natural resource impairment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate opportunities to improve agricultural nutrient management throughout Nebraska by quantifying opportunities for manure distribution, evaluating soil health implications of organic and inorganic soil amendments, and assessing nutrient management practices focused on reducing nitrate leaching in agricultural soils.

Levees are earthen structures constructed to mitigate flooding in low-lying areas. Although levee systems can reduce flood risks, they cannot completely eliminate them. This thesis details the design and results of a circuit intended for infrared laser applications, specifically for transcranial infrared light simulation (TILS) experiments and for use as a range finder. The circuit itself is comprised of a transistor, high voltage power supply, laser diode, capacitor, resistor, diode, and low voltage pulse. The design of a range finder is also developed. The Cyberinet is a new Augmented instrument designed to easily and intuitively provide a method of computer-enhanced performance to the Clarinetist to allow for greater control and expressiveness in a performance. This research investigates the aerodynamic and flow field characteristics of a NACA 0010 airfoil equipped with rotating cylinders near the leading edge, subjected to a flow with a freestream turbulence intensity of 4.3%. The airfoil was modified to integrate five micro-DC motors positioned at 14.5% of the chord length from the leading edge. The cylinders, with dimensions of 0.75 inches in diameter and 0.5 inches in width, exposed 3mm of their length to the incoming flow. The purpose of this experiment is to explore the inflammatory effects of focused ultrasound paired with intravenously delivered microbubbles when used in the lumbar spinal cord. There are currently very few pharmaceuticals that can successfully enter the blood spinal cord barrier (BSCB). This technique used at the lumbar enlargement might allow targeted treatment of pathologies involving the spinal cord.

Facial expressions play a crucial role in human communication, serving as a powerful means to convey emotions. However, classifying facial expressions using artificial intelligence (AI) can be challenging, especially with small datasets and images. Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is an active area of research, with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) being widely employed for classification. In this research, we propose a CNN-based approach for FER that utilizes both original and augmented datasets to enhance classification accuracy. Capture of atmospheric carbon by freshwater algae is being proposed in Clemson University’s outdoor algal carbon capture system, formerly described as the Partitioned Aquaculture System (Drapcho and Brune, 2000). Convective technologies, particularly membrane chromatography, are emerging in the field of bioseparations as an alternative to resin chromatography due to their improved throughput capability. Lignin is an abundant biopolymer with significant promise due to its aromaticity. It has been targeted as a replacement for a number of petroleum-based products including adhesives, coatings, polyurethane foams, activated carbon, and carbon fibers. However, commercially available bulk lignins are too polydisperse, and contain too many residual metals from the pulping process that are detrimental to the properties of the final product.

Inhibitory control is an executive function suppressing inappropriate actions or thoughts and inhibitory control dysfunction leads to impulsivity. Impulsivity is associated with wide-ranging brain disorders including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, substance use disorder, and dementia. The genetic and non-genetic factors contributing to impulsivity are poorly understood. This dissertation aims to begin closing this knowledge gap by identifying the genetic and non-genetic factors for impulsivity and the underlying mechanism in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster.
