The Application Of Statistical Estimation Techniques To Terrain Modeling, Donald P. Duckett Jr. Dec 1991

The Application Of Statistical Estimation Techniques To Terrain Modeling, Donald P. Duckett Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis researches methods of generating accurate and realistic polygonal terrain models by reducing gridded sampled terrain elevation data such as DMA DTED. The terrain models generated should be applicable for use in flight simulators and other systems. Existing methods of terrain modeling are discussed, and limitations of these systems are presented. The geostatistical estimation technique known as kriging is presented as a method estimating terrain elevations at locations not provided in DMA DTED or other gridded terrain elevation data. Kriging is an optimal interpolation method based on statistical analysis of the data. It also provides a measure of accuracy, …

Bio-Mechanics Of The Hip Joint And The Engineering Considerations In The Treatment Of Unstable Intertrochanteric Fractures, Manoj D. Nene Sep 1991

Bio-Mechanics Of The Hip Joint And The Engineering Considerations In The Treatment Of Unstable Intertrochanteric Fractures, Manoj D. Nene

Theses

Numerous previous attempts have been made to determine the magnitude and the direction of forces acting on the hip joint. The mechanism of femoral neck fractures and the frequently occurring failure of its internal fixation has led engineers to analyze the forces involved. An unstable intertrochanteric fracture is one which lacks continuity of the bone cortex on the opposing surfaces of the proximal and digital fragments. A mathematical model is created in this study to examine the 135° and 150° nail plate. The results give an approximate estimation of stresses on the two plates. A 3D finite element model of …

A Biomechanical Analysis Of Three Humeral Fracture Fixation Systems, Alina Michelle Waite Aug 1991

A Biomechanical Analysis Of Three Humeral Fracture Fixation Systems, Alina Michelle Waite

Theses

Often, humeral fractures requiring internal fixation can be a challenging orthopaedic procedure. Each method of treatment possesses clinical and biomechanical advantages and disadvantages. Rigid plate fixation is highly successful in treating a large variety of long bone fractures. Nevertheless, excessive soft tissue dissection is necessary, and vascular and neural anatomy of the humerus can make plate application and removal difficult. An intramedullary nail offers a relatively simple procedure, thereby reducing these anatomical concerns. However, rotational instability at the fracture site is a common complication with a conventional intramedullary nail. Thus, a study was conducted to evaluate a new interlocking intramedullary …

Mathematical Modeling Of Mass Transfer In Microvascular Wall And Interstitial Space, Daekyung Kim

Dissertations

The dynamics of macromolecular transport across the microvascular wall and into the adjoining interstitial space was studied in the hamster cheek pouch using intravital fluorescence microscopy in combination with digital image processing. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-labe led dextrans (FITC-Dx) of 70,000 and 150,000 daltons were used as tracers. In each experiment, the time-dependent extravasation of FITC-Dx from a leakage site in a blood vessel was videotaped for about 2 hours. The macromolecular transport from individual microvessels was quantified by digital video-image processing. Histograms of the light intensity distributions for selected fields at various times were obtained and then converted to the interstitial …
