Morphing Shape Metastructures Using The Hybrid Position Feedback Control And Bistable Structural Elements, Mehmet Simsek, Thomas E. Alberts, Onur Bilgen
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
This research introduces a new multi-degree-of-freedom metastructure concept utilizing a hybrid position feedback controller. An arbitrary number of bistable segments, or structural elements, are connected serially or in parallel to form a distributed bistable structure, or a so-called metastructure. The hybrid controller, an unstable-then-stable second-order single-degree-of-freedom system, leverages the resonant mode of a bistable system to destabilize it and dynamically induce snap-through between equilibria. The metastructure inherits multiple bistable positions, maintaining equilibrium shapes without consuming power and enabling many equilibrium configurations. Two geometric configurations are proposed and analyzed using a modified hybrid feedback control approach, which rejects forces from neighboring …

A Systematic Study Of Freezing Behavior In Earthworms In Response To Auditory And Vibratory Stimuli, Navjot Singh, A. Burton, Dragana Ivkovich Claflin
Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials
While earthworms have largely been studied for their role in eliminating toxic metals from soil, less is known about their behavior overall. Previous work from our lab found that a predator-like auditory stimulus (grunting) reliably induced fear-related freezing behavior (Worthen et al., 2024). The present studies further explore earthworm behaviors in response to audio-vibratory stimuli. In Experiment 1, we manipulated amplitude levels and speaker location to examine the parameters needed to reliably induce a freezing fear response to the grunting sound. It was hypothesized that when the speaker was touching the apparatus and producing an added mechanical vibration, there would …

Effect Of Solvent On Nonanoic And Azelaic Acids Yield Enhancement From Oxidative Cleavage Of Oleic Acid, Chakreeya Santhadklang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study investigates the effect of solvent choice on the oxidative cleavage of oleic acid using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the oxidant, with a focus on improving the yields of nonanoic acid (NA) and azelaic acid (AA). Solvent selection was found to play a critical role due to polarity differences between the reactants and oxidants. tert-Butanol was unsuitable because of its low boiling point, leading to the evaluation of higher-boiling solvents including guaiacol, acetoin, ethyl lactate, and isobutyric acid. Guaiacol and acetoin exhibited undesirable chemical reactivity, while ethyl lactate resulted in low yields due to hydrogen bonding with intermediate species. …

Electrochemical Reduction And Regeneration Of Carbamate, Nattiya Jumpadib
Electrochemical Reduction And Regeneration Of Carbamate, Nattiya Jumpadib
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A reliable method for removing carbon dioxide (CO2) gas from industrial emissions involves CO2 absorption into monoethanolamine (MEA) solution to achieve carbon neutrality. However, the regeneration of MEA is costly and still requires heat to release the CO2 that was captured and other processes to manage the CO2 onwards. Our research demonstrates that integrating CO2 capture with electrochemical CO2 conversion reduces regeneration processes and converts CO2 into valuable products. The electrochemical reduction and regeneration of MEA-CO2 adduct (carbamate) were investigated simultaneously by using copper pulse-electrodeposited on copper foils as a cathode in a microchannel reactor. The gas products were analyzed …

Agency, Index & Process: Investigating The Role Of The Artist’S Body In Digital Sculpture Production, Alan Magee
Doctoral
Contemporary Digital Sculpture has emerged out of recent developments in digital art, 3d modelling and virtual modes of production. These advances range from the creation of more powerful software and hardware systems to the to nascent XR sectors, and the potential for materialisation through technologies such as 3d printing, laser-cutting, or CNC1 machining. However, critical discourse remains predominantly focused on the end product, often overlooking the embodied labour processes inherent in its creation. As revealed through indexical traces of the artist’s body, these processes encapsulate the gestures, actions and subjective agency of artistic activity. Consequently, with the limitations of digital …

Why the work was done: Laboratory scale methods are useful for optimising grain spirit production. While small scale methods exist, comparisons between conventional, simultaneous saccharification and fermentation, and distillery scale production are lacking. Further, there is limited understanding of how these methods affect the rheological properties of the mash and flavour compounds from fermentation. This study compared conventional and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation mashing methods to a pilot scale distillery to establish a standard laboratory method for simulating industrial bourbon production.
How the work was done: Two mashing methods for bourbon whiskey were compared: simultaneous saccharification and fermentation versus conventional …

Significance: Continuous and longitudinal monitoring of cerebral blood flow (CBF) is critical for understanding brain pathophysiology and guiding interventions. Although rodents are the primary models in neuroscience, existing imaging modalities often fail to provide the optimal combination of low cost, high spatiotemporal resolution, wide head coverage, and sufficient penetration depth for small-animal brain imaging.
Aim: Leveraging a clinical speckle contrast diffuse correlation tomography (scDCT) system, we aimed to develop an affordable, user-friendly, fast, and miniaturized scDCT (mini-scDCT) device tailored for depth-sensitive CBF imaging in small rodents.
Approach: The mini-scDCT replaces bulky and costly optoelectronic components with compact, low-cost alternatives while …

The Artemis missions will establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon, serving as a crucial steppingstone for future Mars exploration. Astronauts on these ambitious missions will have to successfully complete complex tasks, which will frequently involve rapid and effective decision making under unfamiliar or high-pressure conditions. Exposure to low doses of space radiation (SR) can impair key executive functions critical to decision making. This study examined the effects of exposure to 10 cGy of Galactic Cosmic Ray simulated radiation (GCRsim) on decision-making performance in male and female rats with a naturally low predisposition for risk-taking (RTP) prior to exposure. …

Future Artemis-class missions to Mars will expose astronauts to prolonged space radiation (SR), sleep disruption, and operational demands requiring greater autonomy, placing decision making and executive function at heightened risk. Both SR and sleep fragmentation (SF) independently impair cognition, yet their combined effects remain poorly understood. Using the Associative Recognition Memory and Interference (ARMIT) task, we assessed cognitive performance in male rats exposed to 10 cGy of Galactic Cosmic Ray simulation (GCRsim), SF, or both. Under well-rested conditions, GCRsim-exposed rats exhibited overt deficits in the C.1.2 stage, performing at chance when reinforcement contingencies shifted, consistent with impaired cognitive flexibility. In …

Robust Quantification Of Cortical Hemodynamic Response To Tactile Stimulation: A Comprehensive Fnirs Methodology To Mitigate Physiological Confounds, Mohsen Hozan
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation establishes a quantitative framework for studying somatosensory processing using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), with a focus on applications in neurorehabilitation. The central aim is to investigate how the brain's hemodynamic response is modulated by the velocity of patterned tactile stimulation. While fNIRS is a promising neuroimaging tool, its data quality is often compromised by physiological noise and motion artifacts, challenging the reliability of its findings and hindering the development of effective, quantifiable neurotherapeutics.
Two preliminary investigations informed the final experimental design. The first pilot study confirmed that pneumotactile stimulation of the hand, during both passive (somatosensory) and active …

Nanoparticle-based therapeutics hold promise for the treatment of atherosclerosis, but challenges such as low drug-loading capacity and a lack of scalable, controllable production hinder their clinical translation. Flash nanoprecipitation, a continuous synthesis method, offers a potential solution for scalable and reproducible nanoparticle production. In this study, we employed a custom-designed multi-inlet vortex mixer to perform cross-linking reaction-enabled flash nanoprecipitation, facilitating controlled and scalable synthesis of cross-linked Poly amidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer nanoparticles. Notably, this approach allows simultaneous nanoparticle cross-linking and drug loading in a single step. The mannose moiety enabled specific targeting of macrophages via mannose receptors, enhancing the localization of …
Finite Element Modeling Of Offshore Wind Monopile Impact Pile Driving In Comsol Multiphysics, Brendan J. Giordano
Finite Element Modeling Of Offshore Wind Monopile Impact Pile Driving In Comsol Multiphysics, Brendan J. Giordano
Open Access Master's Theses
The primary foundation type for offshore wind farms are large-diameter monopiles, which are installed with an impact hammer that produces a high-intensity, broadband impulsive signal that radiates acoustic energy in the water column and seafloor. This signal generates multiple waves such as compressional, shear and Scholte (or interface) waves. Scholte waves travel on the water-sediment interface and contain high-intensity, low-frequency energy that benthic species of fish and invertebrates could possibly detect. COMSOL Multiphysics, which is a finite element modeling software, was used to develop two transient models of impact pile driving to measure Scholte wave particle motion (displacement, velocity, acceleration) …

Analysis Of Dynamic And Final Surface Subsidence Movements Over Subcritical Panels In The Eastern Us, Mauricio Parra Valencia Sr
Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering
Subsidence prediction is a critical field in mining engineering, focusing on anticipating ground movements caused by underground coal extraction. Accurately forecasting these movements is essential for protecting surface structures and infrastructure from damage. However, despite extensive research by mining professionals worldwide, reliable prediction remains challenging, especially in complex environments like subcritical mining areas and locations characterized by highly variable topography. These conditions introduce non-linear rock mechanics that often complicate the application of traditional predictive models. This thesis utilizes measured subsidence data related to the extraction of two adjacent longwall panels in a deep coal mine in the eastern US to …

Small satellites must execute precise, fuel-limited maneuvers under strict actuation and operational constraints. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a suitable approach because it optimizes future actions while explicitly enforcing these limits. This work evaluates (1) whether MPC can operate in real time using binary (on/off), asymmetric thrusters, and (2) whether a high-fidelity digital twin can be used to tune and validate the controller prior to hardware testing.
An MPC framework was implemented on a planar satellite prototype that floats on air bearings, operates at 16.7 Hz (60 ms period), and uses eight binary thrusters exhibiting up to 13.2% variation in …
