A Survey Of Attitudes Toward A Public School System, Darwin A. Winke

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the attitude of the public toward the public school in a small Iowa school district, Gladbrook, and compare this with the public attitudes on a national survey conducted by George Gallup. This survey was conducted because public attitudes towards public schools are continually changing and because very little information about the public's attitude towards the school in Gladbrook, Iowa, was available.

By the spring of 1972 Beaverton School District had five open space schools in operation and three others under construction. These schools are built without separate, individual classrooms. Space is more flexible and can be used in a number of ways. Open space buildings provide the setting for a new kind of teaching and learning process.

Within the Beaverton School District, the Department of Administrative Services was requested to provide information regarding the operation of the open space teaching and learning process. As a result a plan was developed for a descriptive study of some aspects of open space as …

This investigation was a case study for the purpose of comparing the science education program for prospective secondary teachers at The University of New Mexico with selected guidelines established by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) and published by the AAAS in a 1971 pamphlet entitled Guidelines and Standards for the Education of Secondary School Teachers of Science and Mathematics. A Study Of The Relationship Of The Ninth-Grade Civics Course To The Political Knowledge And Attitudes Of Anglo-American And Spanish-American Students, Helen Wright Esterly

The study examined significant differences between political knowledge, political interest, citizen role, and civic tolerance scores of civics and non-civics ninth-grade students in relation to two ethnic groups (Anglo-American and Spanish-American) and four categorical groups (sex, socio-economic status, achievement level, and language spoken in the home). The purpose of the study was to see if a relationship existed between the ninth-grade civics course and student political knowledge and attitude scores, and to see if a differential relationship existed between the civics course and the political knowledge and attitude scores of the subpopulation of Spanish-American students.

Statement of Problem

The purpose of the study was (1) to investigate the readability of seventy-five intermediate grade social studies topic-articles from eight sets of encyclopedias (1971 editions) with two readability techniques, and (2) to determine the suitability of individual encyclopedia articles for intermediate grade use from the resultant predicted readability scores.

Procedures

Twenty-five topics from each of the intermediate grades four, five, and six, were randomly selected from indexes of five intermediate social studies textbook series. A total of 600 topic-articles were evaluated from the eight "Best Quality" encyclopedias recommended by the American Library Association. A total of 1,200 …
