This study was concerned with the delineation of relationships among teacher attitudes on progressive and traditional teaching ideologies, personal philosophical orientation, and degree of individual differences in openness or closedness of belief systems. More specifically, a relationship was sought between a particular teaching ideology, progressivism, and a particular personal philosophical orientation, existentialism, with the expectation that one may be indicative or perhaps predictive of the other.

The Problem

The education of the Spanish-speaking Mexican-American child has been the concern of educators and governmental agencies due to his limited knowledge of the English language, low achievement in the subject areas, negative self-concept, and generally slower educational progress in the schools. Bilingual education has been implemented as one alternative in seeking to improve educational opportunities for this minority ethnic group. The preparation of bilingual classroom teachers to impart instruction through the Spanish language - a language in which the majority of these practicing or potential teachers have not received formal professional training - has posed several problems. The specific focus of this study was to examine the differences between the home environment, college environment, and the personal-emotional and academic characteristics of the dropout and persistent students at Western Kentucky University.

Within the design of this study three separate clusters of factors were examined. These factors were as follows:

  1. The home environment as expressed by family size, income, parental pressures, size of community and high school graduating class I-as an influence on persistency.

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of selected factors on high school seniors' attitudes toward two-year occupational programs as career educational plans. More specifically, the study analyzed the relationship between the students' educational plans and the following selected factors: (1) parents' perceived influence, (2) fathers' occupations, (3) fathers' education, (4) peers' perceived influence, and (5) the schools' perceived influence. The purpose of this study has been to construct a Spanish language arts program for Spanish-speaking students in levels three and four, or ninth and tenth grades, depending on the students' previous language experiences.

A survey of the literature seemed conclusive in stating that many Spanish-speaking students in the United States become functional illiterate or drop-outs under our educational system. The research which has been done on this subject led to the conclusion that Spanish­speaking students are not being offered the necessary educational opportunities which are essential for them to take their place in the mainstream of society.

From Teacher To Principal: The Rites Of Passage, Jerome J. Miller

This study dealt with the upward movement of aspirants from the role of teacher to the role of principal. The Hall's movement was viewed from the context of Van Gennep's "rites of passage" and sponsorship. Van Gennep conceptualized the movement from one role to another in three stages. These stages are: (1) separation, (2) transition, and (3) incorpora­tion. Sponsorship is a mechanism for organizational control and serves as a mechanism to facilitate or hinder movement within the organization.
