The Legal Status Of The Virginia High School Principal In Maintaining Pupil Discipline, Barry Jason Last
The Legal Status Of The Virginia High School Principal In Maintaining Pupil Discipline, Barry Jason Last
Master's Theses
This study will determine the legal position of a Virginia high school principal with respect to discipline. Is his position hindered continuously by court rulings? Many principals state that they cannot discipline effectively with the courts "breathing down their necks."
In comparing the questionnaires received from Virginia principals with a case law study of pupil control decisions, the question of legal limitations on the principal's authority may be resolved. Within the question of limita- tions, the determination of the legal points which either are not known or not understood by Virginia high school administrators can also be ascertained. As a …

A Study Of The Developing Elementary Teacher Education Program At The University Of New Mexico, Carolynn L. Reynolds
A Study Of The Developing Elementary Teacher Education Program At The University Of New Mexico, Carolynn L. Reynolds
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The first major objective for this investigation was to study the historical development of the undergraduate program in teacher education in the Department of Elementary Education at the University of New Mexico. The second major objective was to show the direction in which the Department appears to be going along with a rationale for that movement.
In order to accomplish these objectives, the study was divided into three maJor areas: the history of the Departmental program (1962-1968), the current program (1968-1973), and the projected future alternatives for undergraduate teacher preparation in the Department.

Biobehavioral Correlates Of Perceptual-Cognitive-Motor Performance In A Sample Of Southwest Indian High School Students, Joseph David Blanchard
Biobehavioral Correlates Of Perceptual-Cognitive-Motor Performance In A Sample Of Southwest Indian High School Students, Joseph David Blanchard
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The purpose of this study was to determine if biobehavioral correlates of PCM (WISC subtest) performance offered some promise in the diagnosis and prescription in the learning situation for southwest Native American students. The need for an approach of this kind was predicated on the effectiveness of current testing and labeling practices in "Indian education," and the fact that the southwest Native American student who attends off-reservation boarding schools is generally disadvantaged. Disadvantaged is defined as that state of anomie (Spilka, 1970) and poverty, malnutrition and disease, and family disorganization which characterizes the student population used in this study.
Political Manipulation And Educational Finance: The Relationship Of Superintendents And Legislators Longevity In Office And Interpersonal Manipulative Tendencies To Non-Formula Educational Expenditures In New Mexico, 1971-72, Koy Melvin Floyd
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The primary purpose of this study was to field test an application of Iannaccone's political linkage typology. Iannaccone conceptualized a state’s educational political linkage pattern by formulating a typology of educationalpolitical processes. The fourfold typology includes the following: (1) Type I, Locally-based disparate, (2) Type II, State-wide monolithic, (3) Type III, State-wide fragmented, and (4) Type IV, State-wide syndical. Identifying New Mexico as a Type I, Locally-based disparate state, structural correlates were examined testing the general question, "Do interpersonal manipulative tendencies of political actors and/or longevity in the role influence the distribution of certain additional state educational funds?" Utilizing the …
Specifying And Justifying Educational Program Objectives, Walter Allen Ferrel
Specifying And Justifying Educational Program Objectives, Walter Allen Ferrel
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The need for valid evaluation activities and the lack of a theory of evaluation or even a completely adequate evaluative model provided the impetus for this study. The purpose of the study was to identify the extant model which appeared to have the greatest potential for growing into a comprehensive model or theory of evaluation and to attempt to further its development. The Composite-Goal model was identified and this study focused on the problem of developing procedures to meet two unresolved methodological requirements of the model, (a) specifying the relative importance of program objectives and (b) justifying the selection and …
The Influence Of Mode Of Presentation, Ethnicity, And Social Class On Teachers' Evaluations Of Students, Mary Katherine Jensen
The Influence Of Mode Of Presentation, Ethnicity, And Social Class On Teachers' Evaluations Of Students, Mary Katherine Jensen
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Previous research has shown both vocal and visual cues are utilized in stereotyping. Studies dealing with stereotypes in the classroom suggest that teachers' stereotypes of students' ethnic and social class backgrounds affect both their expectations for students and their evaluations of them. This study offers evidence toward the following questions: (1) Do teachers evaluate students differently according to mode of presentation, students' ethnicity and social class? (2) What is the relative importance of audio, visual, and audio-visual cues for teachers' evaluations? One hundred fifty-six Albuquerque Public School teachers served as subjects for the study. Fifty-two teachers each in audio, visual, …
Bilingual Bicultural Educational Civil Rights:The May 25th Memorandum And Oppressive School Practices., James V. Gambone
Bilingual Bicultural Educational Civil Rights:The May 25th Memorandum And Oppressive School Practices., James V. Gambone
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This dissertation presents an interdisciplinary approach to the area of educational civil rights and bilingual/bicultural education.
Chapter 1 provides a compilation of legal precedents that can be used in challenging existing oppressive school practices. The second chapter deals more specifically with the reality of oppression. Words and formulations in Washington take on new dimensions when they reach Beeville, Texas. The third chapter examines the goals and definitions of current bilingual/bicultural programs. There is the strong suggestion that these programs will continue to be ineffective as long as they remain within the definitional framework established by the oppressor. The fourth chapter …
Navajo Verb Prefix Phonology, James M. Kari
Navajo Verb Prefix Phonology, James M. Kari
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The structure of the verb prefix system in the Navajo verb is clarified by a thorough generative phonological analysis of the morphophonemic alternations in the prefix complex. The intricate modal prefix alternations are presented in detail. Initially, an important internal boundary in the verb, the disjunct boundary, is demonstrated. The disjunct boundary is central to the formulation of a number of common phonological rules such as ni-absorption and vowel deletion, and it provides the organizing principle for a full structural statement of the mode system. A discussion of several pervasive, non-mode dependent phonological rules precedes the analysis of the verb …

Child Language: Topicalization And Nominal-Pronominal Reduplication As A Function Of Language Universals, Language Development, And Language Situation, Eleanor Greet Cotton
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Nominal-pronominal reduplication, a frequently mentioned but seldom studied linguistic phenomenon often associated with lower class and minority group speech, is in actuality not a rarity but quite common in language worldwide. This phenomenon, exemplified by structures such as "My brother, he plays football" and "He plays football, my brother," exists in child language as a function of language universals, language development, and language situation. One of the relevant language universals, that of the process of topicalization, requires analysis beyond the sentence level and is commonly referred to as a speaker's choosing a topic of discourse and then commenting upon this …
A Cross-Cultural Study Of Conformity In Americans And Chinese., Lily C. Huang
A Cross-Cultural Study Of Conformity In Americans And Chinese., Lily C. Huang
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The present investigation intended to study conformity of Chinese and Americans in several different situations through three independent experiments conducted in Taipei, Taiwan and in Albuquerque, New Mexico, based on the paradigm adapted from imitation studies. From historical and anthropological analyses of Chinese and American cultures, as ·well as from more recent experimental studies, there were reasons to expect Chinese to be more conforming and their behavior more dependent upon environmental influences. Experiment One studied the effects of a model's task specific competence and general status on adult Ss' conformity in a survey-taking field situation. The results showed that Chinese …

A Study Of The Factors Which Affect The Job Satisfactions And The Job Dissatisfactions Of School Superintendents, James Paul Miller
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The present study was an investigation of the sources of job attitudes of school superintendents. The study sample consisted of forty of the eighty-eight superintendents in the State of New Mexico. Demographic data indicated that the sample approximated the national group of school superintendents along several important dimensions, including age, experience, and formal preparation.
The study utilized as its conceptual base the Herzberg Dual-Factor Theory of job satisfaction. The methodology of the study closely approximated that used in the empirical research reported by Herzberg, Mausner, and Snyderman. The presen1t study supports Herzberg' s thesis that the factors associated with job …

A Study Of Creativity And Attraction Toward School Of Third Grade Students In Four Elementary Schools Of Different Physical And Conceptual Design, Arthur Deans Barrett Jr.
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Since there is evidence that the development of creative thinking lies at the core of achieving the most fundamental educational objectives, needed research should be undertaken to determine more concisely its relationship with different learning environments. The purpose of this study was to determine what difference in student creative behavior, if any, existed after two years of exposure in each of four different learning environments. An additional purpose was to determine whether student expressed attraction toward school is significantly related to the objectively quantified measures of creativity. Four elementary schools with similar populations were selected for sampling. Their different physical …

Teacher-Child Language Interactions As Affected By Changes In The Behavior Of Selected Children Following The Training Of Their Mothers, Floyd Eugene Haberkorn
Teacher-Child Language Interactions As Affected By Changes In The Behavior Of Selected Children Following The Training Of Their Mothers, Floyd Eugene Haberkorn
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The purposes of this study were: (1) to change the behavior of selected children by training their mothers to implement an interaction style known as the professional response through providing corrective feedback, pointing out salient attributes, supplying elaboration and extending knowledge and (2) to assess the effects of those behavior changes on teacher-child language interactions. The null hypothesis stated that following the training of experimental group mothers, their children's interactions with the teacher would not differ significantly from those of control group children whose mothers received no training. Ten "low interaction" pupils were identified through observations of teacher-child language interactions …
