Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article reflects on theatre administration as a form of leadership grounded in judgment, responsibility, personality, and practical experience. It responds to discussions of theatre administration by distinguishing management and organization from leadership, suggesting that administrative effectiveness depends less on formal training than on the capacity to make timely decisions and accept accountability. The article addresses common concerns in departmental leadership, including rapid judgment, communication, delegation, and professional exhaustion, and reframes these concerns as conditions that administrators must manage directly rather than avoid. It emphasizes the role of a single accountable leader in drama department administration, especially where production, pedagogy, …

Administrative Burnout: A Woman’S Perspective, Lorayne W. Lester
Administrative Burnout: A Woman’S Perspective, Lorayne W. Lester
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines administrative burnout among women in higher education, with particular attention to theatre administration and male dominated university structures. It describes burnout as a condition shaped by workload, conflicting demands, isolation, limited support, and repeated challenges to professional authority. The article argues that women administrators often experience different pressures than men because of scarce peer networks, institutional paternalism, gendered expectations, and unequal access to informal systems of advice, sponsorship, and recognition. It situates these pressures within communication administration and academic leadership by connecting personal experience to broader concerns about faculty governance, administrative support, professional identity, and organizational culture. …

The article updates prior analyses by reviewing total listings, appointment status, faculty rank, salaries, degree and experience requirements, geographic distribution, and specialization areas. It notes that listings remained below earlier Placement Service Bulletin levels and raises questions about changes in the academic job market and the use of Spectra for advertising faculty vacancies. The article identifies continuing demand for assistant professor positions, doctoral qualifications, and speech fundamentals, while also noting changes in broadcasting, mass communication, public relations, and …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Faculty work in small liberal arts colleges is examined through the problem of excessive cocurricular demands on speech communication teachers. It identifies departmental and personal strategies for managing these demands, including shared responsibility for activities, aligning commitments with departmental philosophy, setting limits on requests, delegating student leadership, and referring students to appropriate campus services. The article connects faculty workload, professional identity, student development, and burnout prevention within …

Closeouts In Communication Courses: The Students’ Perspective, Judy C. Pearson
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Student perspectives on course access problems are examined in relation to communication courses facing high demand and limited instructional resources. The article reports student responses to possible remedies for overenrollment, including enrollment limits, large lectures, small performance sections, graduate teaching assistants, undergraduate assistants, reduced performances, mediated instruction, and priority registration for majors. The findings suggest that students were willing to accept some structural changes, especially large lectures paired with small performance sections, greater use of graduate assistants, media support, and priority for majors. However, students resisted eliminating performance work, relying on undergraduate assistants, or reducing personal attention from faculty. The …

Graduate Student Independent Studies
A study is made of the educator Olga Smyth, 1934 graduate of Bank Street. Examins her particular style of working with children, and what it is based on in her history, education, and personality. The continuity of her work and the consistency of her approach is shown, from her days at Bank Street through the making of "Incitement to Reading" (film by L. J. Stone showing her teaching first graders at the Poughkeepsie Day School in the 1950's) to her work at her own school with children whose emotional and learning problems make it impossible for them to succeed in …
