An Examination And Analysis Of The Department Of Special Education In The Muskegon Heights Public Schools, Doristine Louise Minott Aug 1984

An Examination And Analysis Of The Department Of Special Education In The Muskegon Heights Public Schools, Doristine Louise Minott

Masters Theses

This project was undertaken so that an indepth view of the role of the director of special education and the Department of Special Education, Muskegon Heights Public Schools, could be observed. While there are many facets in the Department, much of the time was spent reviewing the Michigan Department of Education Administrative Manual for Special Education, working on administrative skills, and getting a feel for operating the Department.

It was determined that the Department is a very complex one indeed. Because policies change so often from the state level, it is often difficult to stay abreast of things. Therefore the …

Top Third/Bottom Third: A Humane Approach To Merit Pay For Academic Departments, John E. Crawford, Robert O. Hirsch, Carol A. Valentine

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

The article addresses how departments may define valued faculty activity through explicit criteria for teaching, research, publication, and service, while also preserving attention to equity, rank, and length of service. It presents the model as a way to reward exceptional contributions without denying recognition to competent faculty members. The article situates …

It describes how audit results can reveal communication strengths, problem areas, perceptual differences between department members and administrators, and unclear lines of responsibility. The article also evaluates limitations of audit procedures developed for business settings, recommending clearer academic language, attention to multiple administrative levels, interviews, and outside audit teams. By connecting communication climate to administrative stress, shared …

Strategies For Linking Communication Coursework In Various Academic Programs: A Case Study, John F. Cragan, William D. Semlak

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

A case study of curriculum rebuilding and departmental repositioning is presented through the example of a communication department that responded to enrollment decline, loss of program visibility, and changing university priorities. It emphasizes the importance of faculty hiring, communication skills instruction, interdepartmental linkage, and extracurricular programs such as forensics and student organizations. The article situates curriculum development as a strategy for communication administration, showing how academic programs can increase institutional …

Internships And Experiential Learning Formats In A Non-Metropolitan Area, Lynn A. Phelps, John H. Timmis

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Internship development in nonmetropolitan areas is examined as a practical concern for speech communication programs seeking experiential learning opportunities for students. The article defines internships as structured professional experiences supervised by academic and agency personnel, then reviews communication skills commonly needed in professional settings. It addresses central administrative questions, including credit, compensation, eligibility, supervision, legal considerations, and alignment with departmental goals. The article challenges the assumption that meaningful internships require metropolitan locations by identifying opportunities within universities, community organizations, media outlets, government offices, hospitals, civic groups, and local businesses. It contributes to communication administration by offering a framework for matching …
