As They Are: How Relevant Are Professional Publications For Theatre In Academe?, David L. Jorns Oct 1984

As They Are: How Relevant Are Professional Publications For Theatre In Academe?, David L. Jorns

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Using the closure of Exchange: A Journal of Opinion for the Performing Arts as a starting point, this article examines the relationship between academic theatre professionals and professional publications. It describes the journal’s original purpose as an outlet for performance faculty in higher education and traces how its audience, submissions, and circulation diverged from those expectations. The article considers low readership and publication rates among theatre faculty, the role of automatic association subscriptions in sustaining some journals, and survey findings suggesting that creative production is often accepted in place of refereed publication for promotion and tenure. It argues that many …

Unionization And The Speech Communication Department, Ralph Towne Oct 1984

Unionization And The Speech Communication Department, Ralph Towne

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Unionization is examined in relation to speech communication departments and the disciplinary skills they can bring to faculty collective bargaining. Drawing on the context of a unionized university, the article argues that speech communication faculty are well positioned to contribute to negotiation, grievance and arbitration procedures, persuasion of union membership, lobbying, and problem solving because of their training in argumentation, debate, interpersonal communication, and persuasion. It also discusses the potential departmental benefits of union leadership, including increased recognition of the field’s practical value by colleagues in other disciplines. The article identifies possible risks, including administrative resistance toward departments whose members …

Training And Development: A Career Alternative, John R. Johnson

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Training and development is presented as a career path for speech communication students in response to reduced teaching opportunities and growing interest in nonteaching employment. The article describes training and development as a business, industry, and government function that depends on teaching, communication, facilitation, program design, needs analysis, media use, research, and human resource skills. It reviews professional role descriptions and survey findings indicating that human relations and communication skills are central to effective training practice. The article also summarizes employer studies identifying oral communication, writing, and interpersonal communication as common weaknesses among college graduates and as barriers to job …

Sign Systems In Communication, Carol J. Garretson Oct 1984

Sign Systems In Communication, Carol J. Garretson

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Sign systems and sign languages are introduced through distinctions among American Sign Language, manual English systems, fingerspelling, simultaneous communication, Total Communication, Pidgin Sign English, international sign, and Cued Speech. The article clarifies terminology related to deafness, hearing impairment, and manual communication, while addressing common misconceptions that sign language is universal, nonverbal, or merely gestural. It traces the development of home signs, childrenese, school signs, and regional signing patterns, and explains that American Sign Language is an independent language with its own grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and capacity for abstraction. The article also describes efforts to represent English manually through systems such …

The Outsiders: Women In The Academy, Michele T. Myers Oct 1984

The Outsiders: Women In The Academy, Michele T. Myers

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Women’s status in higher education is examined through legal, institutional, and statistical changes following major equity legislation of the early 1970s. The article acknowledges gains in women’s access to higher education, women’s studies programs, professional networks, and administrative development, while emphasizing persistent disparities in employment, rank, tenure, salary, and promotion. Drawing on reports from the Women’s Equity Action League, the American Association of University Professors, and a National Research Council study of matched male and female Ph.D.s, the article presents evidence that women remain concentrated in lower academic ranks, earn less than men, and advance more slowly toward tenure and …

Achieving Upward Mobility In Academia: Priorities And Strategies, Judith S. Trent, Patricia Hayes Andrews

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Strategies for faculty advancement in higher education are presented in response to changing economic, demographic, and institutional conditions affecting promotion, tenure, and employment. The article focuses especially on new faculty members and recent Ph.D.s, recommending that they assess the institution’s mission, expectations, values, and reward systems before developing a professional development plan. It outlines strategies for building a record in three major areas commonly used in faculty evaluation: scholarly productivity, teaching effectiveness, and university citizenship or service. Attention is given to publication choices, convention participation, grant activity, research focus, documentation of teaching, student and peer evaluations, curriculum development, and collegial …

Matrix Design: An Alternative Model For Organizing The School Or Department, Philip J. Salem, Robert D. Gratz

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Matrix design is presented as an alternative organizational model for schools and departments of communication facing competition, complex curricular demands, limited resources, and pressures for accountability. The article contrasts traditional bureaucratic structures with matrix structures, in which faculty or staff may report simultaneously to program managers and functional managers. It explains how this model can clarify authority, improve coordination, and support both continuity and innovation across areas such as undergraduate education, graduate education, research, public service, advisement, theatre production, and communication program administration. Examples include a comprehensive speech communication department and a university theatre production program, both of which require …

The Beginning, Intermediate, And Advanced Study Of Interpersonal Communication, Paul G. Friedman

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

A framework for sequencing interpersonal communication coursework is proposed through a producer, marketer, and consumer metaphor. Developed after a review of interpersonal communication offerings at the University of Kansas, the article distinguishes among introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels of study. Beginning students are described as consumers who learn established knowledge and apply interpersonal communication concepts and skills to personal and professional contexts. Intermediate students are positioned as marketers who synthesize existing research, study primary sources, develop greater skill proficiency, and apply knowledge in more complex settings such as simulations, internships, teaching, or case analysis. Advanced students are presented as producers …

The Concept Of Community For People Working In A Theatre Program Of Limited Size, Margaret M. Swanson

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

A small university theatre program is examined through its relationship to the surrounding community, campus, and prospective students. The article reflects on how theatre programs in small towns may function as bridges between university and local audiences while also becoming accountable to community expectations, traditions, and tastes. Examples include a long-running summer stock company, an annual student production of A Christmas Carol, touring theatre for high school audiences, and plans for a high school arts camp. These programs are described as forms of outreach, recruitment, public service, and experiential learning, but also as sources of financial strain, artistic constraint, and …
