Public School Nurse To Student Ratios: Does It Affect Absenteeism?, Laura Beth Hobbs
ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present
The demands for adequate nursing workloads in public schools have increased with special needs children in Arkansas. School nurses are a necessary component of student academic achievement and physical well-being. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects that nurse-to-student ratios have on absenteeism by providing a convenience sample questionnaire to Arkansas K-12 public school superintendents. The questionnaire has examined the relationship between school nurse ratios and school absentee numbers. A four-question survey was sent out to 233 Arkansas K-12 public schools using a QuestionPro survey. Superintendents were asked about their school district numbers for the 2020-2021 school …

Conceptualization Of Steam Education In The Elementary Classroom, Virginia Olmert Mccullough
Conceptualization Of Steam Education In The Elementary Classroom, Virginia Olmert Mccullough
Theses and Dissertations
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) education is an instructional approach to education in which students demonstrate creative approaches in experiential, inquiry-based learning within the STEM disciplines. Despite the national focus on STEAM education, there exists considerable uncertainty as to what constitutes STEAM education and how classroom educators make sense of their conceptualization of STEAM in their classroom within the state of Georgia.
The method of conceptualization is the internal processing of thoughts that produce new ideas or knowledge. This descriptive case study offers thoughtful new insights on how educators in a STEAM-certified elementary school in a school district …
Student-Developed Laboratory Activities Using Rolling Object On An Inclined Plane To Improve Student Learning, Qing Shao, Joseph Ametepe
Student-Developed Laboratory Activities Using Rolling Object On An Inclined Plane To Improve Student Learning, Qing Shao, Joseph Ametepe
Georgia Journal of Science
This work presents an alternative method of teaching undergraduate introductory physics laboratory. Students are presented with an experimental scenario “Rolling object on an inclined plane” and guided to develop their own laboratory activities in a studio-style setting. The overall goal of this alternative approach is to shift part of the learning responsibility to students. Through guided self-developed activities, students establish the connections between different physics concepts. Such a shift makes students active participants in the classroom, allows them to explore ideas independently, and discover through doing the exploring. Furthermore, the pedagogy is aimed at (i) motivating and actively engaging students …
A Quantitative Study Of The Relationships Among Psychological Safety, Collaborative Capacity, And School Climate In Middle-Level Schools, Karen Brownfield
A Quantitative Study Of The Relationships Among Psychological Safety, Collaborative Capacity, And School Climate In Middle-Level Schools, Karen Brownfield
Dissertations
This quantitative study was conducted to investigate possible relationships between psychological safety, collaborative capacity, and school climate in middle level schools in order to identify specific leadership behaviors to increase collective efficacy. School leaders’ knowledge of the positive effect collective efficacy has on student learning is not enough (Donohoo & Katz, 2019; Parrett & Budge, 2020). Leaders must also be aware of functional behaviors to foster collective efficacy, thus increasing student learning (Donohoo & Katz, 2019). Based on the theoretical work of Bandura (2000, 2012), as well as DeWitt (2017), Garmston and Wellman (2013), Hattie (2017, 2019), and Rock (2013), …

Training The Next Generation Of Translational Scientists: The Case Western Reserve University Translational Fellows Program, Cheryl L. Thompson, Tessianna A. Misko, Mark R. Chance
Faculty Scholarship
Background: An important part of biomedical research is the translation of discoveries into clinical or community applications that impact patient health. For a vast majority of clinical applications and sustainable community interventions, a time-tested way to get innovations to patients is through licensing of the technology and commercial development, often through startups. While biomedical scientists and trainees are schooled in discovery research, the processes of commercialization are foreign or intimidating. Further, many trainees will not aspire to a faculty position, and other avenues of advancement are desirable. Methods: At Case Western Reserve University, we developed and launched a Translational Fellows …

Investigation Of The Role Of Overexpression Of Psbs Under Stress Inducible And Constitutive Promoters To Improve Water Use Efficiency., Annie Nelson
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
As climate change continues to impact environmental growth conditions, it has become increasingly more important to identify potential mechanisms of crop development to resist these changes. Previous studies have identified the role of PsbS in the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) mechanism in the plant by identifying its direct effect on the rate in which excitation energy absorbed by photosystem II is dissipated as heat. It was identified also that PsbS via NPQ oxidizes chloroplastic quinone A (QA) which is a signal for stomatal opening in response to light. By identifying this relationship between PsbS and the signal for stomatal opening in …

Mathematics Is Art: The Impact Of A Non-Traditional Metaphor On Teacher Mindset And Instructional Practices In Mathematics, Karise Mace
Education Doctorate Dissertations
Many teachers hold the belief that one is either a “math person” or not, which impacts their mathematical mindset and instructional practices, and in turn impacts their students’ mindsets and learning experiences. Fostering the development of a mathematical mindset in teachers is critical to dispelling the “math person” myth. As we are metaphorical in nature (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), the metaphors that we use to conceptualize mathematics are born out of and impact our experiences in its study and provide a means for eliminating this myth. In this mixed-methods study I sought to understand the metaphors that in-service elementary teachers …
The Pussy As Prey: Discourses Of Predation And Human Sexual Violence, Paige Skaff
The Pussy As Prey: Discourses Of Predation And Human Sexual Violence, Paige Skaff
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
The pussy is the central focus of this thesis: the pussy as prey, the pussy as the cis-gendered vulva-owning female, the pussy as the effeminate male. The pussy is a source of vulnerability and a catalyst for sexual and gender violence. The term pussy alone aligns the human figure to the nonhuman animal world in euphemistic language. Because an anthropocentric culture accords less respect to the nonhuman animal than to the human animal, the pussy is dehumanized – that is to say, an object without ethical standing that exists to serve the more powerful subject - and therefore, violence against …

Teaching Dna Extractions From Fruits (Strawberry, Banana, Kiwi, And Watermelon), Amadea Pourier, Dillon Nelson, Wiyaka Pomarleau, Kay Cutler, Madhav P. Nepal
iLEARN Teaching Resources
In this lesson, students will use a simple DNA extraction solution and isopropyl alcohol to extract DNA from strawberries, banana, kiwi, and watermelon. The extraction solution consists of dish detergent, water, and table salt. Grinding or crushing the soft fruit tissue will separate the cells. The dish detergent breaks down the membranes, exposing the DNA to the solution. The salt helps the DNA molecule to stick together from the proteins. The cold alcohol dissolves everything but the DNA, which forms an insoluble layer of the DNA allowing it to be visible.
