A Holistic Approach To Combating Stereotype Threat In Stem Among Elementary Children, Tiffany Berry, Hope Tiboni
A Holistic Approach To Combating Stereotype Threat In Stem Among Elementary Children, Tiffany Berry, Hope Tiboni
Psychology Student Scholarship

Faculty Mentor: Dr. Saaid Mendoza, Psychology
Past research has established that concerns about being negatively stereotyped can impact the academic performance of marginalized groups. These stereotype threat effects may be moderated by external factors (i.e., role models, social support) and internal factors (i.e., identity, resilience). We integrate these approaches to promote success within STEM-interested children, particularly young girls. Specifically, we propose a practical toolkit that can be used in elementary schools as a theory-driven holistic intervention for mitigating stereotype threats.
An Examination Of Mental Health In First-Year College Students, Emily Jolin Luettke
An Examination Of Mental Health In First-Year College Students, Emily Jolin Luettke
Masters Theses
Research shows that first-year college students are likely to struggle with their transition into a higher education institution, which can lead to an influx of various mental health issues. This project explores factors that impact the adjustment to college as well as examines barriers that individuals face that keep them from seeking professional help. As mental health issues are on the rise, especially with the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is crucial to have conversations with students on mental health. The goal is to educate students in an effort to reduce mental health stigma and share information about resources …

A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Investigation Of Teachers’ Perspectives Towards Integrating Culture Into Chinese-As-Aforeign-Language (Cfl) Curricula And Instruction In American High Schools, Xuan Song
ETD Archive
The importance of integrating culture into foreign language teaching and learning has been acknowledged in the U.S. by the National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project and foreign language professionals. However, it remains challenging for Chinese-as-a-Foreign-Language (CFL) teachers to embrace this concept thoroughly and implement it effectively in their CFL classes. The study explores six CFL teachers’ perceptions and experiences towards culture and language integration into their CFL curricula and instruction in American high schools. This study aims to describe the overall landscape of culture-language integration in the CFL discipline in American high schools by revealing the essential knowledge of …
Exploring The Relationship Between Art And Environmental Education, Mackenzie Haynes
Exploring The Relationship Between Art And Environmental Education, Mackenzie Haynes
Honors Projects
To explore the relationship between art and environmental education, I created a lesson plan and then put into practice at Crim Elementary School in a 4th grade art class. The art project had to do with the environment, endangered animals and recyclable materials. I titled the project "Habitat Heroes" and students had to imagine that they were the only people left on Earth along with a few animals and lots of trash. They were tasked with selecting an endangered animal in Ohio from one of five different groups (mammals, birds, reptiles/amphibians, birds and fish) to create a habitat for. The …

It's Just Who I Am: A Narrative Inquiry Of The Emergence Of Culturally Responsive School Leaders, Bm Towns
It's Just Who I Am: A Narrative Inquiry Of The Emergence Of Culturally Responsive School Leaders, Bm Towns
ETD Archive
Culturally Responsive School Leadership is one of the most essential elements of the academic and longitudinal success of minoritized students from urban hyper-ghettoized communities. Despite the impact of Culturally Responsive School Leadership, the focus on improving learning has centered teachers instead of their leaders. Upon this realization, this study set out to center the Culturally Responsive School Leader, their context within the landscape of leadership and education, the history of Black Americans, and the frameworks of cultural and social capital as critical to the manner in which Culturally Responsive School Leaders engage with their students, families, communities, and the educational …

“It Takes A Village”: Approaching The Development Of School-Family-Community Partnerships Through Bronfenbrenner’S Socio-Ecological Perspectives, Keonna Stanley, Nai-Cheng Kuo
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Improving student learning and development requires a constant exploration of practical collaboration methods with families and educational service providers. Using Bronfenbrenner’s socio-ecological systems theory can help stakeholders understand how internal and external factors affect a student’s overall performance and raise families’ and educational service providers’ awareness of their roles. The application of this theory encourages stakeholders to extend the existing dual capacity framework between families and schools to the quadruple partnership that further involves communities and universities. When families and educators become more aware of the complexities of the factors and make intentional efforts, they are more likely to create …
Effectiveness Of Virginia Teacher Preparation Programs, Christine Houchins
Effectiveness Of Virginia Teacher Preparation Programs, Christine Houchins
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The perspective of first-year teachers is valuable in identifying the ways in which preparation programs are successfully educating their student teachers. This qualitative study investigates the effectiveness of university-based teacher preparation programs accredited by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Specifically, this study is attempting to gain a better understanding of how the knowledge and skills of novice teachers were efficiently developed in the areas of differentiation, multiculturalism, classroom management, and content knowledge as well as how mentorship through field experience contributes to their growth. To answer the research question, seven interviews were analyzed from in-state, first-year teachers that recently graduated from …

Evaluating A Relationship Education Program With Incarcerated Adults, Terra L. Jackson, Francesca Adler-Baeder, Leah Burke, Silvia Vilches
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Research indicates healthy family relationships can reduce recidivism. More effort has been placed towards providing family life programming in prisons to promote healthy individual and relational functioning, yet only a handful of studies have evaluated and provided insight on relationship education (RE) for incarcerated adults. This study contributes to this emerging effort and examines changes following participation in a RE program, using a sample of 461 incarcerated men and women. Findings indicate significant improvements in anxiety and depressive symptoms and conflict resolution skills. Additional tests of moderation of change by gender, relationship status, and child age revealed a greater change …
The Road To Completion: Campus-Based Support Services That Lead To An Increase In Success Rates For Postsecondary Students With Foster Care Experience Using The Six Factors Of Student Success, Whitney Ortega
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to identify and describe the lived experiences of foster youth at California community colleges who have completed at least one major semester regarding the impact of their participation in campus support programs on their academic achievement.
Methodology: The researcher identified three community colleges within the state of California. Of this target population, purposeful sampling was applied to identify participants that were rich with information and that met specific criteria and 12 students with experience in the foster care system were identified. The researcher collected and coded data from in depth interviews.
Findings: …
