Implementing Tactile Learning To Aid Students Understanding Of The Bohr Model, Christin B. Monroe, Andrew B. Stein, Cindy Tolman

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

It is essential for introductory level chemistry students to understand atomic models and how atoms interact to form chemical bonds. The tactile model in this article utilizes marbles to represent subatomic particles, a cup to represent the nucleus and wooden rings to simulate the electron orbitals. These inexpensive items can be combined to construct models in which students can build foundational knowledge of atomic structure and how subatomic particles interact. Students were asked to provide feedback comparing the use of this tactile model to atomic computer simulations, videos and their textbook regarding the method they felt was most useful to …

Making Earth Science More Relevant To The Lives Of High School Students, Nick Vlietstra Aug 2022

Making Earth Science More Relevant To The Lives Of High School Students, Nick Vlietstra

Masters Projects

Many high school students are disengaged with science curriculum. This continues to be a major need across the STEM subjects as there is a lack of students who are interested in higher level STEM and in STEM careers, which comes at a time when the need is increasing. Earth Science remains a subject that is not heavily emphasized in school curriculum but plays an important role in the current and future lives of students as it covers content such as sustainability, recycling, being responsible with resources and climate change. In order for engagement to increase in STEM learning, a more …

Secondary Science Classrooms Are Not Engaging Enough To Draw Marginalized Students Into Stem Courses., Derek Ottenbaker Aug 2022

Secondary Science Classrooms Are Not Engaging Enough To Draw Marginalized Students Into Stem Courses., Derek Ottenbaker

Masters Projects

The problem being addressed in this project is that science classrooms are not engaging enough to hold students' attention and this is lowering the number of students in STEM majors and careers, especially marginalized groups. Data and research show that the world has an increasing need for people in STEM fields and the current data suggest that there are not enough qualified people in these fields or studying to enter these fields in the future. Research has also shown that there are ways to increase the amount of interest in STEM courses and most teachers will be able to tweak …

Diversity In Educational Resources, Samantha Mae Howe

Masters Projects

Educational resources need to be more diverse to better reflect the populations of classroom communities. Students identifying as Lesbian Gay Bisexual and/or Transgender (LGBT), girls and women, and students from ethnically and/or racially marginalized communities are affected by the classroom content they consume and are taught. This project focuses on the impacts of diversity in educational resources and how intersectional Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) can alleviate the harmful impacts of a one-sided narrative in curriculum. The unit plan included at the end of the project details how teachers can embed diversity into content curriculum and include diverse perspectives while effectively …

Small Group Interventions For Students From Single Parent Households, Gerrit Immink Aug 2022

Small Group Interventions For Students From Single Parent Households, Gerrit Immink

Masters Projects

Research shows that children raised by a single parent often exhibit increased behavioral problems, anxiety, loneliness, stress, and aggressiveness. Divorce, the death of a parent, and parental incarceration are all prominent factors that can lead to children being raised in single parent homes. Small group counseling interventions that focus on these unique situations have been shown to increase self-concept and self-esteem, as well as self-confidence. These interventions have also shown to increase students positive coping skills and decrease feelings of depression and anxiety. This project is a guide to be used by school counselors to build and facilitate counseling small …

Mediation In A Science Classroom, David Ray Davis Aug 2022

Mediation In A Science Classroom, David Ray Davis

Theses and Dissertations

Languaging and translanguaging are very important concepts in science classrooms when considering their role as mediational tools for supporting emergent bilingual students' needs. Languaging, including translanguaging, has to do with how people perceive, connect, and understand the activities and utterances around them through verbal and non-verbal communication in any language. This study positions languaging and translanguaging as mediational tools that can be used for supporting the use of science terms and overcoming second language challenges with them. Emergent bilingual students can benefit from the implementation of languaging characteristics that promote classroom discourse spaces where all their repertoire for responding, and …

A Winning Approach: Teaching Science Communication Skills Through Small-Group Workshops, Serena B. Gumusoglu, Maria Noterman Soulinthavong, Jennifer Barr

Higher Learning Research Communications

Objectives: Research almost always culminates in the communication of findings. Despite the necessity of grant and manuscript writing throughout academic careers, scientific trainees often receive little guided practice in written communication. To fill this gap, we designed, implemented, and evaluated a voluntary writing initiative for biomedical students at a research-intensive (R1) university in the midwestern United States called Writing Initiative in Neuroscience (WIN).

Method: WIN consisted of didactic and workshop components. The didactic component included discussions with topic-specific experts on writing grants and manuscripts for the public and for non-academic scientific careers. The workshop component consisted of small group-based peer …

Increasing Access To Early College Programs At The Beginning Of High School, Jennifer Schmotzer Aug 2022

Increasing Access To Early College Programs At The Beginning Of High School, Jennifer Schmotzer

Masters Projects

Early College Programs (ECP) seek to increase the college pipeline for traditionally underrepresented students in a postsecondary environment: first-generation college students, minorities, and low-income families. While these programs have seen significant success and grown rapidly across the United States, some students are still not accessing an ECP due to real or perceived barriers. Some of these barriers include stereotype threat, academic resiliency, knowledge about higher education, academic achievement, and navigating the transition from a K12 environment to a postsecondary environment. This proposed project seeks to design a coaching curriculum similar to the success of a summer bridge program (Duncheon, 2020) …

Etiology Of Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd): Familial Perceptions Versus Empirically Validated Data, Jacqueline Lubin Aug 2022

Etiology Of Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd): Familial Perceptions Versus Empirically Validated Data, Jacqueline Lubin

LC Journal of Special Education

Presently, there is desynchronization between what parents and family member perceive as causal factors and what research has proven to be possible indicators. This is of great concern because parents choose interventions based on what they perceive to be the cause of ASD (Dardennes et al., 2011). The implication of this is that parents may unintentionally opt for interventions which may be unsuitable for their child. This research paper will seek to highlight and discuss the factors that parents, family and professionals in the field perceive as causes of ASD and the factors that research have identified as triggers (or …

Communicative Competence And Self-Determination, Sonya Spolsky, Gina Debarthe Aug 2022

Communicative Competence And Self-Determination, Sonya Spolsky, Gina Debarthe

LC Journal of Special Education

Self-determination describes people acting as the primary causal agents in their lives through their own volition (Wehmeyer, 1998; Wehmeyer, 2005). Volition means making choices with intention and consciousness. Self-determination consists of four essential characteristics related to volition: Autonomy, self-regulation, psychological empowerment, and self realization (Wehmeyer et al., 2007). Acting autonomously, in a manner to achieve specified goals, problem solving to meet those goals and being aware of the possible outcomes describe some of the activities related to volition and the characteristic of self determination (Light & Gullens, 2000; Wehmeyer et al., 2007). Self-determined people influence their own lives. People with …

Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities And Considerations For The Criminal Justice System, Gordon B. Worcester Ii Aug 2022

Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities And Considerations For The Criminal Justice System, Gordon B. Worcester Ii

LC Journal of Special Education

This paper will explore the adaptive components of ID as expressed by Greenspan (2003; 2006)—vulnerability/suggestibility, gullibility, naiveté, one’s desire to please and a cloak of competence. These and other adaptive characteristics provide strong evidence that individuals with ID are more vulnerable than typically developing persons; and these characteristics can be problematic for individuals with ID who may encounter entities from the criminal justice system. Furthermore, existing research indicates that there are a disproportionate number of individuals with ID represented within the criminal justice system. Between 4% and 10% of the prison population are individuals with ID (Petersilia, 2000). In addition, …

Effects Of Journaling To Decrease Repetitive Questioning Of Individuals With High-Functioning Autism, Annette D. Atwater Aug 2022

Effects Of Journaling To Decrease Repetitive Questioning Of Individuals With High-Functioning Autism, Annette D. Atwater

LC Journal of Special Education

One of the characteristics that can stigmatize and isolate an individual with ASD is restricted interests and the often associated repetitive questioning within those interests. Educational best practice utilizes restricted interests in strategies for socialization and transitions by incorporating the restrictive interest into the activity (Boyd, Alter, & Conroy, 2005), but repetitive questioning tends to be a strain on social interaction in school and home environments (Eaves & Ho, 2008; Lounds, Seltzer, Greenberg, & Shattuck, 2007; Seltzer, Krauss, Orsmond, & Vestal, 2001). Unfortunately, there has been relatively little research conducted in the area of treating restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRB) …

Impact Of An Active Learning Intervention On Student Success In An Introductory-Level Biology Course, Cynthia Littlejohn Aug 2022

Impact Of An Active Learning Intervention On Student Success In An Introductory-Level Biology Course, Cynthia Littlejohn

Dissertations

Large enrollment introductory-level courses with high rates of students receiving a D, F, or withdrawing have been identified within higher education as gateway courses. Students not successfully completing these courses are disproportionately represented by historically and continually marginalized populations, such as low-income, poorly represented ethnic groups, and first-generation students. A form of blended learning called the flipped class model is becoming increasingly prevalent in gateway courses. A flipped class design may reduce the cognitive load by allowing time for processing information before class while cooperative learning may result in a collective working memory effect where social interactions may serve to …

Science At The Center: Meaningful Science Learning In A Preschool Classroom, Sara Raven, Julianne Wenner Aug 2022

Science At The Center: Meaningful Science Learning In A Preschool Classroom, Sara Raven, Julianne Wenner

Publications

Even though children are natural scientists, many preschools isolate and limit science, which can cause children to miss out on valuable learning experiences and school readiness skills. Additionally, minimizing science at the preschool level fails to set a solid foundation for K-12 science education. In this single case study, we focused on the experiences and daily work of one constructivist-oriented preschool teacher who utilized science-based guided play and emergent curriculum as vehicles for important aspects of preschool learning. Findings demonstrate that with careful planning and intention, science can be utilized as a context for nonscience preschool learning objectives outlined by …
