Faith Development In Eighth-Grade Christian Students Studying Creation-Theory-Based Science: A Phenomenological Study, Stephen Matthew Lowe
Faith Development In Eighth-Grade Christian Students Studying Creation-Theory-Based Science: A Phenomenological Study, Stephen Matthew Lowe
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the lived faith development experiences of eighth-grade Christian students following a creation-theory-based curriculum at a Northern Michigan Christian school. The 12 male and female students who participated were aged 13–14 years and self-identified as Christian. The study setting was a small Christian middle school in Northern Michigan. Researchers have thoroughly investigated many aspects of faith development but had not addressed the faith development of eighth-grade Christian students following a creation-theory-based curriculum. The theoretical framework underlying the study was Fowler’s faith development theory. Data were triangulated from semistructured interviews, focus groups, …

Evoking Nature; Biophilic Interior Design And Biomimetic Architecture, Ivana Krsteska
Evoking Nature; Biophilic Interior Design And Biomimetic Architecture, Ivana Krsteska
International Programs
Biophilic design is not a luxury, it is a necessity for our health and well-being. We need hospitals where patients heal faster, schools where children score higher on tests, offices where employees are more productive, communities where people know their neighbors and are more aware of their families thriving. It is imperative that we see ourselves as biological beings and not just as humans. Biophilic design shows how to create healthy and productive living spaces for the modern person while fostering a sense of belonging. By embracing this design principle, we are unconsciously reconnecting with nature, while creating environments ideal …
Beyond ‘Rising Tides’ And ‘Lying Flat’: Emergent Cultural Practices Among Youth In Urban China, Diego Gullotta, Lili Lin
Beyond ‘Rising Tides’ And ‘Lying Flat’: Emergent Cultural Practices Among Youth In Urban China, Diego Gullotta, Lili Lin
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article, “Beyond ‘Rising Tides’ and ‘Lying Flat’: Emergent Cultural Practices Among Youth in Urban China”, Diego Gullotta and Lili Lin examine how Chinese youth are positioned within the dominant culture, how young people appropriate space in their emergent cultural practices, and how they negotiate meaning-making. The article first analyses the rising tides (houlang) video, sponsored jointly by the state and the private sector, and argues that it reduces youth to a homogenous subject inscribed into the discourse of “China’s rise” (zhongguo jueqi) via emotional mobilization. The “lying flat” phenomenon represents young people’s negative response to …
Breadtube Rising: How Modern Creators Use Cultural Formats To Spread Countercultural Ideology, Jj Sylvia Iv, Kyle Moody
Breadtube Rising: How Modern Creators Use Cultural Formats To Spread Countercultural Ideology, Jj Sylvia Iv, Kyle Moody
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article, “BreadTube Rising: How Modern Creators Use Cultural Formats to Spread Countercultural Ideology,” J.J. Sylvia IV and Kyle Moody analyze the rise of BreadTube. Scholars have argued that YouTube’s algorithms lead to greater radicalization (Ribeiro et al.) and bad actors have weaponized algorithms to draw users into conspiracies (boyd, What Hath We Wrought?). This article adds to this by linking these practices to the commodification of social media that spread misinformation as adaptations of socially and rhetorically mediated technologies. It analyzes how the economics of YouTube and other platforms demand that user-generated content fit within paradigms of …
Biopolitics In The Twenty-First Century: India And The Pandemic, _ Swatie, Rashee Mehra
Biopolitics In The Twenty-First Century: India And The Pandemic, _ Swatie, Rashee Mehra
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Swatie and Rashee Mehra discuss in their "Biopolitics in the Twenty-first Century: India and the Pandemic”, the rise of the biopolitical state in India in the 2020s. The article emphasizes the relevance of Michel Foucault’s work on biopolitics for the pandemic in India. The biopolitical governmentality of the Indian state operates at several levels to politicize ‘life itself’: racism (the notion that sections of the population are disposable), economics (the notion of privatization of care), and the logic of contagion (based on ideas of threat perception and risk). The article engages with biopolitics in the 21st century and looks at …

Teacher Perception Of A Brief Mindfulness-Based Curriculum And Its Impact On The Development Of Social Skills And Self-Regulation On A Preschool Classroom, Allison Poggendorf
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
Recent studies on mindfulness and its impact on children have found promising results, especially with social-emotional skill development. A majority of the research on mindfulness applied in educational setting tends to focus on elementary and high school students, and there is limited, but growing research that examines the impact of mindfulness among early childhood students. This current study explored the impact of a brief mindfulness-based curriculum on an intact preschool classroom. Specifically, this study examined if preschool teachers perceive mindfulness practices in the classroom to impact their students’ self-regulation skills and social skills and how likely they were to continue …

The Effects Of Digital Game-Based Instruction On Knowledge Acquisition And Retention Of Genetics Content, Brinley Kantorski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Digital educational games have been a part of the educational landscape since the early 1970s. Since then, there has been a proliferation in the quantity, format, type, and quality of digital educational games available to classroom teachers. Despite this, the body of literature surrounding the effectiveness of these digital educational games remains highly fragmented and lacks unifying themes. While some literature exists to support the use of digital educational games in immediate knowledge acquisition, little research has been done on how digital educational games impact the retention of knowledge in the long term. As such, this study examines how the …

Social Justice Informed School Counseling: A Conceptual Model For Promoting Academic Achievement And Equity Among Dual-Enrolled African American Students, Sylvester Hanner
Social Justice Informed School Counseling: A Conceptual Model For Promoting Academic Achievement And Equity Among Dual-Enrolled African American Students, Sylvester Hanner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To promote college enrollment, high schools may offer students the opportunity to participate in dual enrollment programs. Students who gain college credit while earning a high school diploma may be more likely to graduate college on time and at a lower cost (College Board, 2017). Despite the benefits of dual enrollment, African American students lack equitable access to dual enrollment programs. Additionally, when they are afforded access to participate in dual enrollment courses, they have a lower academic success rate when compared to White students (CCRC Fink, 2017).
This study provides insight into concepts related to African American students’ opinions, …

A Qualitative Phenomenological Study Of Educators' Experiences Of Well-Being At Independent Private Schools, Kristi Breault Combs
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to understand educators’ experiences of well-being at independent private schools. The theory guiding this study was Deci and Ryan’s theory on basic psychological needs. It identifies that the basic psychological needs of relatedness, competence, and autonomy are universal and underlay optimal well-being. I used a qualitative transcendental phenomenological approach to seek in-depth information from the participants about their lived experiences of well-being at independent private schools. The central research question was: How do independent private school educators describe their experiences concerning workplace well-being? Sub-questions addressed well-being related to basic psychological needs: …

Teachers’ Years Of Experience, Race/Ethnicity, And Gender As Predictors Of Their Culturally Responsive Classroom Management Self-Efficacy Beliefs: A Correlational Study, Faye Marshall-Sterling
Teachers’ Years Of Experience, Race/Ethnicity, And Gender As Predictors Of Their Culturally Responsive Classroom Management Self-Efficacy Beliefs: A Correlational Study, Faye Marshall-Sterling
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative, predictive correlational study is to determine how accurately teachers' culturally responsive classroom management self-efficacy beliefs can be predicted from a linear combination of teachers’ years of experience, race/ethnicity, and gender. The problem related to the proposed quantitative study is that discipline disparities exist in the school milieu, whereby the root cause could be teacher-related variables such as years of experience, race/ethnicity, and gender. The current study used a convenience sample of 103 teachers from social media teacher groups. Critical race theory and Bandura’s (1977) self-efficacy theory provide a theoretical lens from which teachers’ efficacy in …

A multiple regression analysis was used in the predictive correlational research design to corroborate the impact of emotional intelligence and gender on the level of transformational leadership style. The study participants consisted of 190 higher …
Exploring Intersectionality In School Disciplinary Decisions: A Phenomenology Of The Experiences Of African American Female Administrators, Jennifer M. Anthony
Exploring Intersectionality In School Disciplinary Decisions: A Phenomenology Of The Experiences Of African American Female Administrators, Jennifer M. Anthony
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore how African American female school administrators experience and understand intersectionality regarding discipline outcomes. The theories used to guide this study are critical race theory, first introduced by Bell in 1977, and intersectionality theory coined by Crenshaw in 1989 as they seek to analyze how racism and the intersection of marginalized identities impact school discipline outcomes. The central question that guided this research is how do African American female school administrators experience and understand intersectionality and discipline outcomes? This study used purposeful and criterion sampling to acquire 10 African American female …

The research question focused on the lived experiences of students with ASD and their perceptions regarding reading comprehension and self-efficacy. The theory guiding this study was Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy; that …
Assessing Virtual Free-Choice Agricultural Learning: A Mixed Methods Approach, Richard John Kennedy
Assessing Virtual Free-Choice Agricultural Learning: A Mixed Methods Approach, Richard John Kennedy
Theses and Dissertations
Since the mid-19th century, agricultural museums and living history sites, first in Scandinavia and then in the United States and Canada, have provided historical, cultural, and, sometimes, scientific information about farming to visitors. Many of these visitors have been school children on field trips. Assessment of this learning, however, has been scant, particularly within the free-choice style inherent in these types of educational venues. At the same time, assessment of free-choice learning, often analyzed through the Contextual Model of Learning (Falk & Dierking 2000), has taken place at educational sites like zoos, natural history museums, and science centers. This study, …
