Honors Projects

This research explores the multifaceted factors influencing the development of mathematical competence through a combination of cognitive, psychological, and sociocultural frameworks. The study aims to address how genetic predispositions, nurturing environments, teaching methods, and societal influences interact to shape mathematical abilities. Using insights from genetic research, cognitive psychology, and education theory, we analyze the role of effective teaching methods, such as active knowledge construction and differentiated instruction, in fostering mathematical skills. The study also examines how societal biases, particularly gender stereotypes, impact students' confidence and interest in math. The findings highlight the importance of promoting gender-inclusive practices and early exposure …

The stress created by academic pressure may prevent honors students from exploring curricula beyond that required by their majors. Challenged with additional workload and extracurricular requirements, students in honors often confront added stress caused by a desire to perform favorably in all academic pursuits. This pressure may result in hesitancy to explore new ideas, nurture curiosity, or break free from the rigors of a defined program of study—the opposite of what honors pedagogy and practice purport. The purpose of this action research project was to determine if incorporating total participation techniques into a fifth-grade literacy classroom would increase reading comprehension scores. This researcher was driven to find a teaching strategy that would boost student engagement, participation and academic achievement. It has been proven that student centered learning increases student participation. Evidence has shown increasing student participation and engagement leads to an increase in academic achievement. A quantitative study was used to determine the effectiveness of total participation techniques in a fifth-grade literacy classroom. Comprehension assessment data was collected and analyzed. The prevalence of non-partner sexual violence among college students is a pressing concern that demands urgent attention. Although an integral part of the education system, international college students are often underrepresented in various studies. This calls attention to understanding the cultural nuances and multiple factors affecting this population. The current research delves into the experiences of sexual abuse among international students within the last 12 months, focusing specifically on incidents where sexual penetration or unwanted sexual touching occurred without consent. In this report, I discuss how English Medium of Instruction (EMI) is approached by private schools in Nepal and its implications on larger society. Nepal’s increasing demand for EMI, and thus private schools, has contributed to a variety of social issues including inaccessibility and a dying culture. By situating EMI in Nepal’s education system, I explore how the privatization of schools and the wide implementation of EMI is both a result of neoliberalism and a contributing factor to such ideologies. Background: The number of children diagnosed with cancer is expected to increase by 2050. The caring aspect of these children is usually left to members of the family, more so the mothers. Caregivers are usually faced with various challenges, such as financial issues, social stigma, and emotional and psychological issues. Caregivers use various coping strategies to manage the challenges they experience in the caring process, which can be positive or negative coping strategies.

Objective: To explore the challenges and coping strategies of caregivers of children with cancer receiving care at a national referral hospital in Kenya.
