This paper examined research studies that explored what is truly best for student success in the field of education. This topic aimed to determine the best way to teach students or ensure they reach their full potential through research findings from various qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method studies. These studies examined the areas of school start times and student’s daily schedules, academic structure and how classes are being offered, student mental health, and the use of technology in the classroom. The Critical Literacy (CritLit) project promotes using critical texts to engage readers in examining their lived experiences and understanding of social justice issues. This study used a qualitative participatory approach with a narrative design to research the students’ engagement in a book club using critical texts. Participants were fourth- and fifth-grade African American students who participated in a 4-week project at a weekend Islamic school in Philadelphia. I organized my study into four sessions. Three book club sessions were audio-recorded and observed. Field notes were taken; pre and post-interviews were conducted; student/teacher reflections were collected with students’ notes and handouts; …

The Effect Of Small Class Size From Kindergarten Through Third Grade On Eighth-Grade Gender Reading Achievement, Christopher Harry

This study examined the effect of small class size intervention on student outcomes using reading achievement scores as measured by the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS), a standardized, norm-referenced test, while controlling for independent variables inclusive of students' gender, race, socioeconomic status (SES), and environment. This study included students who participated in a randomized, long-term study, the Tennessee Student Teacher Achievement Ratio (STAR) experiment from 1985 through 1989. The STAR study took place in the Tennessee public school system, encompassing two groups of students: those who received treatment, small class intervention, 657 students, and students who did not, 5,689. …

Textbooks convey powerful messages to students about who can legitimately participate in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Using culturally relevant pedagogy as the guiding theoretical framework, this study sought to explore the extent to which secondary life science textbooks are culturally relevant in their depiction of gender, race, working style, and range of ability. Critical multicultural content analysis guided this research to explore the ways in these textbooks uphold or disrupt stereotypical notions of STEM professionals. Analysis indicated more images of females compared to males, but perpetuated notions of White, able-bodied scientists working alone. Given these findings, gendered power …

Office hours are an integral component of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses at nearly all colleges and universities. Despite their ubiquity as a support mechanism, there has only been limited work examining how instructors approach office hours and what shapes these approaches. Here, we conduct a phenomenographic study to investigate how instructors of STEM courses experience office hours and how these experiences may impact their approaches to promoting and managing office hours. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines include various programming needs across institutional levels. In high school settings, STEM programs are designed to encourage critical thinking and interest in STEM careers. At postsecondary institutions, STEM disciplines allow students to earn credentials to enter different career sectors. However, some STEM educators are transforming how they perceive their discipline by incorporating innovative practices into their work. Instructional materials (i.e., textbooks, lab manuals, and other ancillary materials) allow educators to diversify their teaching style. Background: Women are at an increased risk of developing psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression during pregnancy. Psychiatric conditions during pregnancy can put mothers and fetuses at risk of worse physical and mental health before, during, and after the completion of a pregnancy. Previous research indicates that women pregnant during COVID-19 were at a greater risk of developing mental health conditions and being exposed to stressors.
