The convergence of the health, racial, and economic crises resulting from COVID-19 has exposed long-standing inequities among New York State’s Black communities. The recent, brutal and senseless killings of Black men and women (e.g., George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, among an exceedingly long list of names) have ignited growing national public protests and increasing agreement about the existence of deep-seated racial injustice within systems and institutions and how it has been compounded over time. Taken together, the COVID-19 pandemic and the pandemic of senseless killings of Black people are providing a magnified reflection of the nation’s historic …

Exploring Saudi Emergency Room Nurses’ Perceptions About Their Disaster Preparedness, Fadiyah Alshahrani
Exploring Saudi Emergency Room Nurses’ Perceptions About Their Disaster Preparedness, Fadiyah Alshahrani
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background: Disasters can overwhelm the capacities of health care facilities quickly. In recent years, the world has been affected by an increasing number of significant disasters. These include natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tornados, storms, fires, and epidemic outbreaks. There are man-made disasters such as terrorist attacks, transportation accidents, and stampedes at mass gatherings. The resulting deaths and property damages have enormously affected countries’ economies, particularly on a health care system’s preparedness. In a major disaster, health care professionals must respond, manage, and prevent additional harm to victims. Nurses are the largest group of health care professionals …

Oral Exams In Shift To Remote Learning, Mihaela Sabin, Karen H. Jin, Adrienne Smith
Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship
In this experience report paper we present our experience with the development of oral assessments as final examinations in three introductory computing courses. The choice of this type of summative assessment was prompted by the emergency remote instruction instituted in the middle of the Spring 2020 semester, across colleges and universities in the U.S., due to the coronavirus pandemic. The principles that guided our oral assessment design were: to develop a more comprehensive measure of student competence and mitigate exam cheating; to facilitate communication and workplace skills through student-teacher interaction; and to alleviate negative emotions associated with traditional summative assessments. …

Review Of Nature Experience In Learning, Donger Liu, Emily A. Fisher, Guy Trainin
Review Of Nature Experience In Learning, Donger Liu, Emily A. Fisher, Guy Trainin
Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design
The current review examines the impact of nature experience on student academic performance. The findings suggest that the effect exists in two types of association: (1) green space and school-level academic performance; (2) outdoor educational programs and student school motivation and knowledge. Overall, the researchers predominantly found that students exposed to green space performed better academically in Grades K to 12. Meanwhile, students’ socio-economic status, the proximity of green space, types of vegetation, and subjects could also affect the association. Considering it is not unusual that researchers found SES contributing to the correlational model, future studies ought to control for …

A Qualitative Case Study Of A Transitional Program For Students In Middle School As They Transition To High School, Patrick Tremayne Moore
A Qualitative Case Study Of A Transitional Program For Students In Middle School As They Transition To High School, Patrick Tremayne Moore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Every school year, many U.S. students prepare to make the transition from being a middle school student to becoming a high school student. School transitions happen regularly and can be considered predictable. As students transition to high school, there are more challenges such as school work and peer influence. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of students who participate in a transition program as they transition from middle school to high school. Also, this study explored the perceptions of teachers who participated in the transition programs. The population of this study consisted of students …

The Tasting Party Assessment: Can Educators Reliably Evaluate Preschoolers’ Willingness To Try New Foods In Group Settings?, Laura L. Bellows, Savannah Hobbs, Susan L. Johnson
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Food neophobia, defined as an unwillingness to consume novel and unfamiliar foods is common in young children. Assessment of neophobia or willingness to try new foods can be a challenge with this audience. With the increase in nutrition interventions focused on the young child, valid and reliable measures to assess willingness to try new foods that can be administered in groups by classroom teachers and Extension educators are needed. The Food Friends: Fun with New Foods (FWNF) program aims to increase children’s willingness to try new foods in childcare settings. The Tasting Party assessment was developed as the primary tool …

Elementary Educators' Self-Efficacy, Curiosity, Learning Attainment, Experience, And The Number Of Neuromythic Beliefs: A Correlational Study, Angela Ranae Posey
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The advancements in brain research have led to misconceptions in education. These misconceptions, known as neuromyths, can have impacts on the education system. The problem is educators could potentially waste resources on instructional practices or professional development due to neuroscience misconceptions. The purpose of this quantitative correlation study was to determine if there was a relationship between elementary educators’ self-efficacy, curiosity, learning attainment, experience, and the number of neuromythic beliefs. The sample population (N = 67), collected through a convenience sample, included rural in-service elementary educators from one school district in Missouri. Participants took an online questionnaire that included the …
A Case Study: The Servant Called To Lead As Head Of School Of A Pk-12 Private Faith-Based School In North Central Florida, Renee' Pleasant
A Case Study: The Servant Called To Lead As Head Of School Of A Pk-12 Private Faith-Based School In North Central Florida, Renee' Pleasant
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this single, holistic, instrumental case study was to understand the servant leadership characteristics of a PK–12 leader from a private, faith-based school in North Central Florida, influencing employee job satisfaction. For this study, servant leaders were defined as those who serve with a focus on the followers, whereby followers are the primary concern and the organizational matters are peripheral. Servant leadership theory guided this study and began with the writings of Greenleaf, who desired leaders to serve their followers first and then lead. The central research question guiding this study asked, What is the qualitative influence of …
A Novel Approach To Teaching Hidden Markov Models To A Diverse Undergraduate Population, Philip Heller, Pratyusha Pogaru
A Novel Approach To Teaching Hidden Markov Models To A Diverse Undergraduate Population, Philip Heller, Pratyusha Pogaru
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are an essential tool for Bioinformatic analysis, with extensive success at finding patterns (e.g. CRISPR arrays or genes of interest) in DNA or protein sequences. HMMs are conceptually intricate, and the algorithms that make use of them are complicated. Thus they present a challenge to Bioinformatics instructors at the undergraduate level, particularly when the students’ educational backgrounds are broadly diverse. At San Jose State University, many undergraduate Bioinformatics students are Biology majors with little or no prior coursework in mathematics, statistics, or programming. For this population a theory-based approach to teaching HMMs would be ineffective. To …
An Applied Research Study On Improving Parental Involvement At A School In Southeastern North Carolina, Jacqueline Susan Hahn
An Applied Research Study On Improving Parental Involvement At A School In Southeastern North Carolina, Jacqueline Susan Hahn
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this applied research study was to solve the problem of low parental involvement for school stakeholders at a school in southeastern North Carolina and to formulate a solution to address the problem. The central research question for this study was “How can the problem of low parental involvement be improved at a school located in southeastern North Carolina?” The theoretical framework for this study was comprised of Piaget’s cognitive development theory and Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. Accordingly, the philosophical assumption that guided this research study was an ontological assumption through the interpretive framework of social constructivism. This study …
African American Women In Leadership In Faith-Based Higher Education: A Qualitative Study, Michael Charles Walker
African American Women In Leadership In Faith-Based Higher Education: A Qualitative Study, Michael Charles Walker
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
African American women hold unique experiences in the pursuit of leadership roles within faith-based colleges and universities. Since leadership occurs within a cultural context, there is sound reason to explore if transformational leadership behavior could positively impact the lived experiences of African American women within faith-based colleges and universities who seek to enter into leadership roles. The survey was cross-sectional with data collected at one period and returned to the researcher. This research design utilized qualitative interview as the means of data collection. Five open-ended research questions guided the research study. Women were qualified for sampling with employment at a …
A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived And Professional Experiences Of African American Male Instructors: Functions Of The Practices Of School Systems, Thomas Dewayne Cash
A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived And Professional Experiences Of African American Male Instructors: Functions Of The Practices Of School Systems, Thomas Dewayne Cash
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological investigation was to explore and ascribe meaning to the lived and professional experiences of African American male educators as functions of the practices (i.e., systemic policies and interactions with colleagues) of a suburban school system. The philosophical frameworks guiding this study were Critical Race Theory (Bell, 1970) and Tokenism (Kanter, 1977) as they relate, respectively, to the effects of engendered racism and the implications of the invisibility and hypervisibility associated with being Black male instructors. The three related sub-questions involved (1) the contributing roles of school systems’ procedures to the encounters of this group …
Navigating The Murky Middle: Understanding How Career Aspirations And Experiences Influence The Career Progression Of Women Identifying, Student Affairs, Middle Managers, Lindsey Gilmore
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Even though women have made tremendous strides in many facets of education, ascending the administrative and leadership ranks within universities at a proportionate ratio to the number of women who peak as middle managers is not one of them. In the past 40 years, the number of women serving as presidents of universities across the nation has increased less than 10% from 21.1% in 1975 to 30.1% in 2016 (ACE, 2018). If a woman does find herself serving at the helm of an institution, it is more than likely at a “private, liberal arts schools rather than at doctoral granting, …

Exploring Public, Primary School Educators’ Perceptions Of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Jessica Berry
All Theses And Dissertations
This qualitative narrative inquiry was used to explore public primary school (K–8) educators’ perceptions of ACEs and how their understanding of ACEs might contribute to creating a trauma-sensitive school climate. The conceptual framework of the study was centered on Mezirow’s Transformational Learning Theory, with the premise that learning and change require: (a) a recognition of one’s own biases, norms, and constructs, which would be followed by (b) reflection, (c) the realization that change is needed, and (d) a willingness to learn (Mezirow, 1991).
Ten public school K–8 educators from the state of Maine participated in semistructured interviews that were transcribed …
Examining Sources And Pathways Of Phosphorus Transfer In A Ditch-Drained Field, Amy Collick
Examining Sources And Pathways Of Phosphorus Transfer In A Ditch-Drained Field, Amy Collick
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Understanding the processes that mobilize and transport dissolved phosphorus (P) during storms is critical to managing P in flat landscapes with open ditch drainage and legacy soil P. In this study, we used routine baseflow monitoring and intensive storm sampling at a ditch-drained site on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore (July 2017–September 2018) to assess whether concentration–discharge (C-Q) relationships and chemical and isotopic hydrograph separation could provide insight into the processes that mobilize and transport dissolved P in ditch drainage. Using a segmented regression model, we determined that long-term C-Q relationships for dissolved P differed above and below a discharge threshold …
