Finding Meaning For Postmodernism, John Wilton Jan 1992

Finding Meaning For Postmodernism, John Wilton

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Recent media hype throughout the land has brought wide-spread conversation on the phenomenon known as postmodernism. True to its nature, the media (while propelling the rapid dissemination of the term itself) gives us very little insight into the history/meaning/concepts/origin/definition or effects of the now quite fashionable designation.

Split- And Multiple-Images In Filmic Presentations: Concise Information Or Multiple Confusion?, Barbara J. Erickson Jan 1992

Split- And Multiple-Images In Filmic Presentations: Concise Information Or Multiple Confusion?, Barbara J. Erickson

Graduate Research Papers

Because there is more than one panel with moving pictures being viewed simultaneously, many questions can be posed about the audience's ability to process and interpret the multiple images, the construction of intended messages, and the appropriateness and ramifications of the use of this type of technique in moving visual mediums. The question central to this study will deal with analyzing the split/multiple moving image technique: How does the use and arrangement of multiple images or panels influence the viewer's interpretation of the message? Further, through a review of previous studies, an attempt also will be made to learn the …

Editorial, Harold Pearse Jan 1991

Editorial, Harold Pearse

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Since the visual is at the core of our work as art educators, we, the editors, are giving special attention to reflecting and addressing that concern. Two of the articles in this issue feature photographs - Roddy and VanWinkle's report on the role of photographs in community self-empowerment and Barbara Lounder's reflections on The One Year Show, an exhibition in response to the "Montreal Massacre". Both articles rely on images to tell their story as much as they depend on words. Indeed, the reproductions of the pieces in The One Year Show are presented as a folio, as a self-contained …

Feminist Film Theory And Art Education, Michael J. Emme Jan 1991

Feminist Film Theory And Art Education, Michael J. Emme

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Every ten years or so, lonely voices make themselves heard in the art education literature shouting something like ‘Pay attention to the “newer media” (Lanier, 1966, p.7), or ‘Have you heard? There a “new image world” (Nadaner, 1985, p.9) out there.’ One writer even suggested that “directed, critical inquiry of [television] will extend knowledge in art and aesthetics and enhance the quality of peoples’ lives (Degge, 1985, p.85) Despite these sporadic exhortations, Jaglom and Gardner’s (1981) observation that “our culture has not yet invented ways of presenting [the mass media] or teaching its structure to children” (p.35) is still true …

Educating Educators In The Selection, Design, And Utilization Of Educational Media, Sara B. Baumhover Jan 1991

Educating Educators In The Selection, Design, And Utilization Of Educational Media, Sara B. Baumhover

Graduate Research Papers

Today, as in the past, there are various factors affecting education and calling for changes. Firstly, there is a constant influx of technology and materials into educational and training systems. Secondly, the characteristics and needs of learners are changing. Finally, the problems affecting both learners and educators are increasing. Rather than passively accepting change, Ways (1964) has suggested that humans become active participants. For educators, this means altering instructional strategies to incorporate new mediums (Romizowsky, 1988). Educators need to have a voice and exercise control over the way in which messages are presented. In order to do so, educators need …

Development Of A Seminar For Women Starting A Business As Instructional Development Consultants In The Audiovisual Industry, Denae E. Harder

Graduate Research Papers

The last decade has witnessed many changes in the business community. Small businesses have emerged as the thriving force in the U.S. economy and the increased percentage of women in this area is too great to ignore. Today women enter the small business arena for various reasons but it initially began with the women's movement in the 1970's. According to Jones (1991), the 1980's found women going into business for themselves after encountering the "glass ceiling," a barrier that kept them from advancing to upper level management. The problem is that since many women did not advance up the ladder …

A Manual For Child-Created Video Production For Use By Classroom Teachers, Jean M. Hogan

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We are living in an information based society that has resulted in the availability of new technology for use by students and teachers. The video camera is an ideal tool for disseminating information and teaching skills; it is easy to use, produces immediate results and feedback, and catches the students' attention in an instant. Yet, many teachers shy away from incorporating the video camera as a part of their classroom curriculum. Some are wary of the camera itself. Others fail to see its potential as a part of their classroom curriculum since there are already many skills to be taught …

Visualization, Ed Harris Jan 1989

Visualization, Ed Harris

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In pockets of deep prehistory, humans made the first marks on their world. Those marks were completely new images, images that had not existed before. The painting and tooling on stone walls recorded and attempted to explain human interaction with the world. Languages, alphabets, systems of numbers and physical structures came much later. Each new tool eventually became interconnected with the others to produce more complex means of studying, recording and building the human-world relationship. These pockets of activity moved, merged, divided or died. The accumulations of perceptions, knowledge and technology continued to mix and reconnect.

Cultural Literacy As Social Empowerment, Laurie Hicks Jan 1989

Cultural Literacy As Social Empowerment, Laurie Hicks

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The concept of cultural literacy as a process of becoming socially empowered is developed. A comparison is made between “Getty-ized DBAE” with an approach to art education informed by the development of cultural literacy. How these approaches differ, not only in their design but in the fundamental goals which motivate and guide them is illustrated. An outline is presented of a pedagogical structure around which a cultural literacy approach to art education can be organized and implemented.

The Level Of Visual Literacy In Post-Secondary Students, Julie Russell

A person who is literate is able to read and write text, while a visually literate person is able to decode visual an images, and to a lesser extent use these skills in the creation of artworks. Art syllabuses in Western Australia clearly state desired outcomes in the area of visual literacy, yet little is known about how effective these guide-lines have been in producing school leavers who are visually literate. The effectiveness of secondary an teaching strategies …

A Study Of The Feasibility Of The Use Of Tele Presentation Debating In High School Education, Albert Preston Weeks Nov 1987

A Study Of The Feasibility Of The Use Of Tele Presentation Debating In High School Education, Albert Preston Weeks

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The target school area has experienced a steady decline in the number of schools actively involved in extracurricular competitive debate despite rapid growth in the number of schools in the district. Numerous problems exist. Liability and travel time are cited as critical reasons for school nonparticipation.

Telepresentation Debating eliminates these problems. The feasibility of maintaining the integrity of the debate process was tested by simulating a televised debate among three separate schools in the target area called Telepresentation Debating. A Small Rhetoric Of Retrenchment: A New Ma In Telecommunications, Frank W. Oglesbee Oct 1987

A Small Rhetoric Of Retrenchment: A New Ma In Telecommunications, Frank W. Oglesbee

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article describes the development of a Master of Arts program in Telecommunications at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, designed during a period of retrenchment and shifting institutional priorities. The program emerged from challenges including rising undergraduate enrollments, limited faculty resources, and the collapse of a previous interdisciplinary master’s degree in public visual communication. Faculty and administrators framed the proposal rhetorically to emphasize career preparation in management and policy rather than production, aligning with institutional goals of “smaller but better” programming. A distinctive summer-through-summer schedule was introduced to attract non-traditional students with professional experience seeking to complete a degree in one …
