Suggestions And Considerations For Planning An In-House Audiovisual Department In Business And Industry, Audrey J. Gramstad
Suggestions And Considerations For Planning An In-House Audiovisual Department In Business And Industry, Audrey J. Gramstad
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to integrate many ideas from books, journal articles, and personal ideas into a reference to use while establishing an in-house audio-visual department for a business. Since recent articles and books on in-house audio-visual departments are rare, a questionnaire was developed to supplement the literature and sent out to several companies with in-house AV departments.
Developing A Media Center In A Health Care Facility, Denise L. Buchan
Developing A Media Center In A Health Care Facility, Denise L. Buchan
Graduate Research Papers
The director of education approached the librarian and asked her how to make slides for a medical staff presentation. The librarian was at a loss as to how to assist the director. In another situation, the marketing department of a health care facility was approached by another department to develop and shoot a video promoting a new piece of equipment. Members of the marketing department had no idea where to begin---their experience was limited to print media.

Winona Campus Life, Mass Communication Department
Winona Campus Life
Winona Campus Life was a weekly laboratory newspaper produced by the WSU Mass Communciation Department students and printed as a supplement to the Sunday Winona Daily News, which began in September 1983. The newspaper provided coverage of the four institutions of higher education in Winona: Winona State University, St. Mary's University, College of Saint Teresa, and Winona Area Vocational-Technical School. It was created to provide a place for Mass Communcation students to publish their articles and photographs with the idea of generating reader feedback, which is essential in journalism education.

"In all my years in education, I've never seen anything like its dramatic growth in the past twelve months...it will sweep the country in the next few years" (Staff, 1986). A director in the New York Department of Education_ made that enthusiastic endorsement of telecommunications in education when reflecting on development in his state. Recent nationwide expansion of telecommunications efforts and rapid development of related technologies have boosted the potential of interactive television in education.
The Identification Of Right Brain Children And The Application Of Teaching Strategies To Improve Their Academic Achievement, Barbara B. Stutes
The Identification Of Right Brain Children And The Application Of Teaching Strategies To Improve Their Academic Achievement, Barbara B. Stutes
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The author identified students with a right brain dominance through surveys and questionnaires. These students' past academic records were scrutinized and on the basis of repetitive low test scores, poor social and scholastic achievement and a pattern of apathetic behavior, a target group of five students was compiled for this study. Based on their mode dominance, a series of teaching strategies were created to strengthen the dominant mode and stretch the subdominant mode. The strategies were formulated for daily implementation and were specific activities that called on reaction from either the left or right hemisphere of the brain, and the …

Small Groups In Large Classes, Wendy Holmes
Small Groups In Large Classes, Wendy Holmes
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
The fact that "mass lecture" is almost synonymous with "mass class" in academic circles suggests that the only thing an instructor can do with large classes is talk to (or at) them. After some desultory attempts at general discussions, question and answer sessions, and optional discussions for interested students, that is exactly what I settled into in "Introduction to Art," a class in art appreciation which I teach to roughly two hundred students every semester. I clarified and refined my lectures. I distributed mimeographed sheets bearing artists' names and dates and the main points of each lecture. I showed slides …
Visual Literacy: Implications For Corporate Communications, Marion Hazzard
Visual Literacy: Implications For Corporate Communications, Marion Hazzard
Graduate Research Papers
Visual literacy, the ability to encode and decode visual messages, is a relatively new concept. Most visual literacy efforts are directed toward school children; very little research and development addresses adults' visual literacy and the potential effects of visual literacy on corporate communications. This paper focuses on visual literacy for adult professional communicators. By examining the background and theory of visual literacy, and tracing the use of visual communication in modern business, a rationale will be established for visual literacy training in the corporate setting.
Learning Strategies As An Aid To Graphical Comprehension, Peggy Pruisner
Learning Strategies As An Aid To Graphical Comprehension, Peggy Pruisner
Graduate Research Papers
The highest human abilities- perceptual, intellectual, and linguistic- interact and support each other during the act of reading. The processing and assimilating of written information is the single goal of reading. The complex mental process that is used when a reader encounters a variety of materials that satisfy many needs and purposes cannot be easily dissected into a hierarchy of skills, but is represented by a large number of interrelated skills that gradually develop. The total process of reading is impaired if any major function or part prevents adequate performance, thereby preventing literacy. It is vital to note that the …
Nonverbal Communication Of The Deaf, Jayne S. Lytle
Nonverbal Communication Of The Deaf, Jayne S. Lytle
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Nonverbal communication among deaf people is discussed in relation to American Sign Language, Deaf culture, and interactions between deaf and hearing people. The article distinguishes between nonverbal behavior and the visual linguistic features of ASL, noting that movements of the face, eyes, head, and body may function as part of the language rather than as merely expressive gestures. It reviews assumptions about deaf people’s receptive and expressive nonverbal abilities, including the idea that visual communication automatically produces greater skill in interpreting body language. The article describes characteristic behaviors related to proxemics, touch, attention-getting gestures, eye gaze, and paralanguage, with attention …

The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French Language and Literature Papers
Although the visual arts have long been a feature of civilization courses, instructors do not always exploit their full potential. This paper presents a checklist to help teachers identify the relevant aspects of the arts for study. Its goal is to facilitate comprehensive treatment of works of art by focusing on three areas: the aesthetic dimension, the social context, and the artist’s own experience. The checklist is followed by a series of activities which encourage students to integrate the various aspects of the arts while practicing their language skills.
Art Research And Curriculum To Accomplish Multicultural Goals, Myrna T. Amdursky
Art Research And Curriculum To Accomplish Multicultural Goals, Myrna T. Amdursky
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
If there were no budget constraints, art education would be nice. Most people agree it’s fun to do, and students do enjoy it. But most people also think it's a frill and unnecessary. As thinking art educators, we must address these issues and the concerns of our policy makers. We must definitively respond to the questions of why we spend all that time, effort, and money teaching art.
The Effects Of Training In Visual Cognitive Skills On Reading Comprehension, Valerie Joan Croll
The Effects Of Training In Visual Cognitive Skills On Reading Comprehension, Valerie Joan Croll
Masters Theses
In an effort to design learning materials which de-emphasize the decoding process, and concentrate instead upon cognitive and critical thinking processes, picture study has been chosen as a potentially effective vehicle for providing delivery of programs for remediation of reading problems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of training in visual cognitive skills as an alternative remedial technique for increasing the reading comprehension of children whose reading skills are considered to be lower than expected due to a learning disability. The population was a group of children in grades four, five, and six (n=34) in a …

Behavioral Tendencies Of Known Catalog Buyers, Sandra J. Hendrickson
Behavioral Tendencies Of Known Catalog Buyers, Sandra J. Hendrickson
Graduate Research Papers
According to the Direct Mail/Marketing Association, more than five billion catalogs were mailed in 1982 and mail orders generated approximately 40 billion dollars in consumer sales mostly from catalogs. This is a very large increase compared to earlier years (Time, 1982). The increase in catalog consumers is due to several factors, one being the sophistication of computer systems. Computers have provided catalog films with a method of targeting their mailings to specific groups or types of individuals.
A Proposed Course Of Instruction In Resources For Communications For Saint Ambrose College, Stephen Thomas Fehring
A Proposed Course Of Instruction In Resources For Communications For Saint Ambrose College, Stephen Thomas Fehring
Graduate Research Papers
To effectively convey a message can present a difficult task. Communicating means more than merely getting a message from a sender to a receiver. To be effective, the message must be understood by the receiver on the sender's terms. The instrument used to convey the message is the medium, and the medium is often as important as the content of the message. Today, someone with a message to convey can select from a wide variety of media to aid in the effective delivery of their particular message. Media have been employed as communications aids since the time of Moses. When …

Nonverbal Communication In The Elementary Classroom, Jacqueline J. Smith
Graduate Research Papers
The focus of this paper will be upon the various aspects of nonverbal communication and their effects upon students and the educational process in the elementary- school. Large sums of money and much research have been concentrated on educational technology, instructional media, and their effects on the learner. While this is important, success in the classroom depends on the face-to-face interaction between students and teachers-communication (Hurt, 1978).

A Socially Relevant Art Education, Lanny Milbrandt
A Socially Relevant Art Education, Lanny Milbrandt
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In view of the foregoing arguments for art education in a social context one might ask: do art educators bear a responsibility for the shaping of a society? If one agrees that such a responsibility is within our jurisdiction, the next question must be: what is our potential sphere of influence and activity in this realm of responsibility and how do we get on with the job? Art educators must develop a commitment to socially responsive goals and take active roles to enable those goals to be realized.

A Promotional Strategy For The Library/Instructional Media Technology Program At Cuyahoga Community College., Mitchell J. Bienia
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
It was the purpose of this study to plan a promotional strategy for the Library/Instructional Media Technology program at Cuyahoga Community College. This strategy consisted of developing a professional-looking brochure for the program, establishing distribution places for the brochure, and arranging for news releases and other publicity to complement the distribution of the brochure.
Procedures included the actual steps of developing a program brochure from inception to the finished product. A major consideration in writing copy for the brochure was a survey of students currently enrolled in the program. The primary purpose of the survey was to determine what types …

A Review Of Literature On The Relationship Between Legibility Standards For Printed And Projected Type, Lawrence Cardamon
Graduate Research Papers
Print legibility is of concern to all seeing, reading individuals. For over 100 years educators, printers, psychologists and ophthalmologists, among others, have investigated a wide number of interrelated factors in print legibility. This research reached its zenith in the 1920's through 1940's, particularly in the voluminous work of M.A. Tinker and D. G. Paterson. There is a large and growing body of knowledge available on what affects the quality of our perceptions of printed typography.
