Gender Equity : Retrospect And Prospect, With Recommendations For The School Of Education: Part 2: A Curriculum For Girls, Lesley P. Newhouse

Research outputs pre 2011

Curriculum awakeners:

Definitive statements· by Newsom, 1948; Cooper, 1968; Green 1976; Sutherland 1981; and Parker & Offer 1989, have had a profound influence on the orientation of Part 2 of my report on the "Curriculum for Girls" in Australia over the past twenty two years.

John Newsom, (1948) A quotation which made a deep impression on me was that of Newsom:

"and so the great work goes on, wrote John Newsom of British girls' grammar schools in 1948, " ... and we produce little parrots, who can tell you the Main Clauses in the Treaty of Utrecht or give you …

Pastoral Care In Schools : Some Implications For Teacher Training, Ron Best Jan 1990

Pastoral Care In Schools : Some Implications For Teacher Training, Ron Best

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In Britain, teachers' concern for children as more than "empty buckets to be filled with knowledge" is widely recognised as a professional obligation. It is also legally enshrined in the concept of the teacher in loco parentis. There is nothing particularly new about this. Arnold of Rugby placed academic achievement third behind the promotion of Christian values and "gentlemanly conduct" in the priorities he set for his staff, and in public boarding-schools the roles of house master and matron were considered important means by which pupils' personal, physical and (supposedly) moral well-being were protected. What is relatively new is the …

School-Based Teacher Education, Heather J. Thanos Jan 1990

School-Based Teacher Education, Heather J. Thanos

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Pre-service teacher education can and should integrate learning about teaching through continuous school-based experience. It is in the dynamic environments of schools and classrooms that prospective teachers learn through observation, experience and reflection to make critical judgements, in real and changing circumstances, about what it means to teach. Moreover, it is through continuous school-based teachIng experience, in a variety of school contexts, that prospective teachers construct their own critical consciousness of the social purposes of schooling and not just the technical skills of teaching. An upheaval in teacher education in Australia is currently foreshadowed by the Australian Education Council (AEC) …

Factors That Impinge Upon The Implementation Of A Formally Structured Pastoral Care Programme In A Government School, Eleanor Watson Jan 1990

Factors That Impinge Upon The Implementation Of A Formally Structured Pastoral Care Programme In A Government School, Eleanor Watson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

There is substantial evidence to indicate that societal ills have entered the schools and become manifest in the school environment in the forms of student alienation from the mainstream of the school community and pressures upon schools to provide a range of care related services Although schools are not responsible for the ills of society there is a general community expectation that they will act to counteract any of the social or educational disadvantages that accrue to the young as a consequence. In order to address such issues, Pastoral Care programmes, appear to have been developed in an ad hoc …

An Examination Of The Pastoral Needs Of Students And The Needs Of Their Teachers As Providers Of Pastoral Care, Philip A. Crane Jan 1990

An Examination Of The Pastoral Needs Of Students And The Needs Of Their Teachers As Providers Of Pastoral Care, Philip A. Crane

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The problem addressed by this research project is expressed in two parts. Firstly an examination of the pastoral care needs of students at a particular independent secondary school. Secondly, an examination of the needs of the teachers (as providers of pastoral care) who are attempting to understand and deal with the pastoral needs of the students. The research takes the form of a bounded case study, employing techniques of data gathering and analysis from each of the positivistic and naturalistic paradigms. As such then the study is described as mixed - mode research allowing for the triangulation (Jick, 1979. p.602) …

An Examination Of The Reasons Why Parents Send Their Daughters To Specific, Independent, Non-Catholic Schools For Their Secondary Education In Western Australia, Lois A. Joll

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study examines the reasons why parents send their daughters to specific, independent, non-Catholic Schools for their secondary education in Perth, Western Australia. Initially, through a review of related literature, variables which might influence parental choice of a private school were identified. In order to establish the relevance of these variables, and to identify any other previously unidentified variables which may influence parental selection of a particular independent girls' school, a survey was undertaken of sample groups of parents whose daughters had entered Year 8 in 1989. Further data was obtained through interviews of a small number of parents from …

The Assessment Of Client Satisfaction With Mental Health Services: A Review For The Practitioner, Mervin Michael Carnahan Jan 1988

The Assessment Of Client Satisfaction With Mental Health Services: A Review For The Practitioner, Mervin Michael Carnahan

Graduate Research Papers

In the last several years, mental health providers have realized the importance of assessing the consumer's (client or patient) satisfaction with their services (Loff, Trigg, & Cassels, 1987). This is in part due to a legislative change regarding Community Mental Health Centers. The 1975 amendments to the Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) Act require centers to assess and evaluate (among other topics) the "acceptability of services" (Windle & Paschall, 1981). While governmental programs have been mandated to become more accountable, even private agencies have felt some pressure to show whether clients are satisfied with the counseling provided (Royse, 1985). Today, …

Role Expectations And Role Conflicts Of Presbyterian College Chaplains, Stephen R. Weisz Sep 1986

Role Expectations And Role Conflicts Of Presbyterian College Chaplains, Stephen R. Weisz

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The various constituencies to which a Presbyterian College chaplain must be accountable have varying expectations of what roles are appropriate for chaplains to play in the educational institutions they serve. The college administration, the local Presbytery, students and chaplains themselves each have their own perceptions of the real and ideal role of the chaplain.

This study sought to investigate the "Real Role and the Ideal Role” perceptions of seventy-two chaplains serving Presbyterian Church related colleges in the United States. A sample of one hundred fifty students attending Tusculum College, where the chaplain functions primarily in an academic teaching role, and …

Countertransference In Counseling The Terminally Ill Client, Sharon Carpenter Curtis Jan 1986

Countertransference In Counseling The Terminally Ill Client, Sharon Carpenter Curtis

Graduate Research Papers

According to many authorities, probably the most universally shared human fears are those surrounding death (Clarke, 1981; Kubler-Ross, 1969; Momeyer, 1985). In counseling 11 life-threatened11 or dying clients, there is an urgent need for empathy and transparency on the part of the counselor. Ideally, it is essential for counselors to resolve as much as possible their own conflicts concerning "death issues" so that they are more able to help clients work through their own unresolved conflicts concerning the impending death.

A Curriculum Data Base For Continuing Education For Ministers In The Colombia-Venezuela Union Mission Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Edgar J. Escobar

Dissertations

Background and Purpose of the Study. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is seeking research data on which to base the planning and development of efficient continuing education for ministry programs geographically and culturally adapted to the territories where the ministers are serving. As a needs assessment, the study sought data regarding the societies in which the program functions, the ministers' attitudes toward their ministerial training, their needs and aspirations on subject matter, learning-situation preferences, motivations, and obstacles for continuing education. The study also surveyed the opinions of administrators, departmental directors, and lay leaders at the Union, Conference, and Mission levels.

Methodology. …
