Sources And Alleviators Of Stress Experienced By Ministers' Wives, Diane M. Nethercott
Sources And Alleviators Of Stress Experienced By Ministers' Wives, Diane M. Nethercott
Graduate Research Papers
Ministers' wives experience unique and excessive stress as evidenced by their rising divorce rate, a growing rebellion against "what they consider outdated notions of sacrificial servanthood, 11 and by reports from professionals who counsel them (Lavender, 1976; Molgaard, 1981; Presnell, 1977, p. 274). In studying stress and burnout for clergy, Bouma (1980), Lavender (1976), and Mace and Mace (1980) noted that although ministers encounter stress factors far beyond those for other occupations, their wives experience even greater strain. Furthermore, Lavender (1976) reported that when ministers' wives seek counseling, psychologists find that stress factors have caused them severe psychological and emotional …
Guided Imagery And Music, Katheen Muleady Seager
Guided Imagery And Music, Katheen Muleady Seager
Graduate Research Papers
Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) is a technique that involves listening to carefully selected music in a relaxed and meditative state for the purpose of reaching altered states of consciousness, and allowing images, symbols, and deep feelings to arise from the inner self. This process facilitates therapeutic intervention, self-understanding, holistic healing and personal growth (Bonny, 1978b). The purpose of this paper is to examine the theoretical basis and development of GIM and to present examples of GIM usage in various therapeutic settings. GIM was selected for investigation because of its association with holistic health movements and applicability to death and …

A Critical Evaluation Of Rogerian Counseling In Terms Of Its Usefulness In Christian Counseling, James O. Sims
A Critical Evaluation Of Rogerian Counseling In Terms Of Its Usefulness In Christian Counseling, James O. Sims
Graduate Research Papers
Pastoral counseling, in its present condition, is dominated ''almost exclusively by therapeutic psychology, principally by Rogerian counseling" (Aden, 1984, p. 38). Depending on one's perspective, such a charge is either a sign of hope or an omen of doom. Gaylord B. Noyce, professor of pastoral theology at the Yale University divinity school sees it as the latter. He charges that an "exaggerated deference" to the client-centered theory and methodology of Carl Rogers is "undermining the ministry in hundreds of congregations today." "We have taken the immensely helpful, nondirective Rogerian pattern and made it gospel, not only for wide areas of …

A Study Of Selected Variables Dealing With Continuing Education Interests Of Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors And Judicatory In The North American Division, Penny Shell
Dissertations
Background and Purpose of the Study. The study grew out of an increased Seventh-day Adventist interest in continuing education for ministry in the church's North American Division. This interest had generally been accompanied by a lack of current data for careful planning and development of resources. As a needs assessment, the study sought opinions on continuing education for ministry from the pastors, the local conference presidents, and the local conference ministerial directors in the North American division. The four specific areas covered by the study were (1) subject-matter preferences, (2) learning-situation preferences, (3) motivations, and (4) obstacles. Also covered were …

A Comparative Study Of Selected Behaviors Of Children From Divorced/Separated And Intact Families In The Parochial School System, Elaine Delaney
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study was designed to determine if there is a significant difference in selected behaviors of children from divorced/separated families in the parochial school system as compared with children of intact families within the same school system. The relationship was examined by taking into consideration the child's self evaluation of his/her home, school, and peer relationships and teacher's evaluation of school related behavior. Four parochial elementary schools with relatively equal economic status were selected from the metropolitan area of a large mid-western city. Subjects included four hundred eighty-three fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students and their respective homeroom teachers. Sixty-three …

Counseling The Parsonage Family, Walter Mcgee
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This historical survey was undertaken to investigate certain adjustment problems faced by parsonage families, ordering the available information into precise and functional categories of non-adjustment and then making recommendations based on the categories. Published literature, previous research, and personal observations were the sources used. The categories were: adjustment problems in the areas of identity, stress, support, and residential mobility. General recommendations resulting from the survey conclusions for the whole church included: an area director of pastoral rare and counseling, provisions for psychotherapy for pastoral families, conference retreats, district committees of pastoral care and counseling, sabbaticals, and psychotherapy for bishops and …
