Institutional Climate And Institutional Effectiveness At Three Community Colleges, Connie S. Buckner
Institutional Climate And Institutional Effectiveness At Three Community Colleges, Connie S. Buckner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to explore the impact of employee morale, as manifested in institutional climate data, upon institutional effectiveness; and (2) to determine the extent to which information generated by climate survey data was used in developing and implementing change initiatives at each of the institutions studied. Three institutions were selected for this multiple site case study. Four sources of data from each institution were used to provide a "picture" of institutional climate. These sources of data were (a) the Personal Assessment of the College Environment (PACE) climate survey, (b) institutional self-study reports, (c) reaffirmation …

Implementing Total Quality Management In Business And Academe: A Case Study, Nancy O. Bartell
Implementing Total Quality Management In Business And Academe: A Case Study, Nancy O. Bartell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Total quality management (TQM) is a philosophy and process that has been successfully implemented in many business firms. Other organizations, including institutions of higher education, have become increasingly interested in adopting it. It is likely that facilitators need to be cognizant of organizational differences and adjust facilitation methods and strategies accordingly. This dissertation is an exploratory study designed to examine the role of the TQM facilitator in diverse settings. Specifically, the study is an in-depth two-case research study of TQM implementation in an international manufacturing firm and a regional institution of higher education. The primary foci of this dissertation are …
Exploring Knowledge Processes For Technology Assimilation, Rochelle K. Young
Exploring Knowledge Processes For Technology Assimilation, Rochelle K. Young
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In the emerging knowledge society, the ability to make the experience and expertise of those involved in and affected by new technology unconditionally available to all members of an organization is becoming increasingly important. One of the problems in developing such knowledge processes for technology assimilation is that current social structures do not easily accommodate unconditional participation. Since the implementation of modern information technology is changing the workplace and the nature of work itself, alternative social structures are needed. This research takes as given that deep questions concerning knowledge processes and social transformation are in principle undecidable; and, only questions …

The purpose of this study is to reveal what technological skills are inquired about by superintendents/directors of schools in the state of Tennessee when hiring high school principals. The study further reveals perceptions that superintendents/directors of schools have for the desirability of high school principals to possess technological skills and their perceptions of how capable current high school principals are for possessing those skills. The study was based on a total population of 139 school superintendents in the state of Tennessee. Surveys were mailed in early Nov, 1995. One hundred-two surveys were completed and returned. Findings were divided into two …

God's Ordinary People: No Ordinary Heritage, Jessica L. Rousselow, Alan H. Winquist
God's Ordinary People: No Ordinary Heritage, Jessica L. Rousselow, Alan H. Winquist
Books by Taylor faculty, staff, and administrators
Preface Excerpt: The authors see two main streams flowing through Taylor University's history. First, from its inception as Fort Wayne Female College in 1846, there has been a commitment to equal educational opportunities for both genders and for all economic classes. In the nineteenth century, classical studies formed the core of the curriculum. In the twentieth century, the liberal arts commitment has remained central. The second stream is the focus on Christian service nationally and internationally. During the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth century, most of the Christian service was sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, currently identified …

The State Of The Parties, Second Edition, John C. Green, Daniel M. Shea
The State of the Parties Second Edition
The first edition of this book originated from research coordinated at the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics in 1993. While it seems odd that a second edition would follow just two years later, we felt compelled to move in this direction for the following reasons: The 1994 midterm election had a dramatic impact on party politics, several of the conditions touched upon in the first volume have continued in the last two years, and the debate over the precise role of parties in American politics has taken on a new quality. The second edition reflects the impact of …

Large-Scale Institutional Change To Implement An Urban University Mission: Portland State University, Judith A. Ramaley
Large-Scale Institutional Change To Implement An Urban University Mission: Portland State University, Judith A. Ramaley
Higher Education
In response to calls for accountability and effectiveness, public universities are reviewing their missions and are adopting measurable mission-specific goals. An emerging distinctive institutional type is the urban university, an institution characterized by the nature and extent of its responsiveness to the research and educational needs of complex metropolitan regions. This paper concerns the national environment for organizational change, a model for change, and a case study of one urban university that has pursued comprehensive and systemic change in its academic and administrative environment to direct resources to the support of its distinctive urban mission.
A Description Of Merger Applied To The Montana State University Context, Stephen L. Coffman
A Description Of Merger Applied To The Montana State University Context, Stephen L. Coffman
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article reports on the description of merger applied to the Montana State University context. Eastern was renamed on July 1, 1994, as Montana State University (MSU)-Billings. The Billings Vocational Technical Institution was then merged with MSU-Billings, and renamed the College of Technology. There is considerable debate on campus as to the nature of the merger. There is also potential benefit for students in this merger. MSU-Billings should be better able to attract the best students if enough of these positive outcomes are realized. The final positive outcome of the merger to be presented concerns the public. If history and …

An Examination Of The Relationship Among Job Satisfaction, Educational Satisfaction, And Post-Industrial Change For A Selected Sample Of Graduates Of Master’S Degree Programs In Business, 1970-1990, Sherry Tomlin Sandkam
Theses and Dissertations
Post-industrial society in the United States is characterized by a knowledge explosion which has been accompanied by an increase in occupational complexity and specialization and the ongoing need to upgrade knowledge and higher education at the master’s level, especially in professional programs. Research supports a consensus about the positive outcomes of master’s education in general, however, conflicting data exist regarding master’s degree programs in business, including criticisms of graduates, declining application and enrollment patterns, and concerns on the part of graduates with the major organizational changes which are occurring in the workplace as post-industrial society moves from a goods-producing to …
Change Theory In The Middle: An Ethnohistory Of A Rural Georgia Middle School, Jody Jones Woodrum
Change Theory In The Middle: An Ethnohistory Of A Rural Georgia Middle School, Jody Jones Woodrum
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
This study provided an analytic description of the transition of one rural Georgia school as its staff sought to embrace the middle school concept. Development of such a description required that the researcher examine the school through the filter or sieve of change theory and in an holistic manner, using techniques appropriate to ethnohistorical, qualitative research. Specifically, the description spanned an eighteen-year, bounded period and used participant observation, individual and group interviews, and documentation to uncover the meaning participants in the school attached to the changes.
While Georgia provided an incentive grant to encourage eligible schools to move toward the …

Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study was to provide a first step in clarifying the role of the high school academic department chair as it is currently practiced in the state of Oregon. The study examined from the administrative perspective the potential for the continued development of the educational leadership role of the department chair as an administrative resource for instructional improvement. A researcher-constructed questionnaire was used to gather data from 27 Oregon school district superintendents, 34 high school principals, and 118 high school department chairs from English, math, science, and social studies departments in those same high schools.

A Sociometric Analysis Of The Informal Networking Patterns Of Iowa's Public School Superintendents, Thomas M. Hoover
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to describe the informal communication network of public school superintendents in the state of Iowa. This investigation was initiated because the literature on the superintendency remains silent to the topic of communication relationships among superintendents. For purposes of this study, networking was defined as activities leading to the formation of peer relationships resulting in the acquisition of useful information, advice, moral support, or socializing and mentoring opportunities.
The collection of data was made possible by means of a self-reporting survey mailed to all public school superintendents in Iowa. The survey reflected the standard approach …
