The state law requires the teaching of the effects of narcotics and stimulants. Most teachers would be glad to comply with the law if they were certain that they could present reliable information. The difficulty in the past has been that most of this information available was merely propaganda and not based on scientific fact. The tobacco companies have always been able to secure statements from people of prominence who were tobacco users to the effect that tobacco not only did them no harm but actually proved of value. Their statements were not based on scientific evidence, and many of …
The Value Of Music In The Elementary Grades, Anna M. Fox
The Value Of Music In The Elementary Grades, Anna M. Fox
Bachelors’ Theses
Why do same people smile and look blank at the mention of the study of art? Why do they look at art teachers as though they were in a class by themselves, as though they must be a queer lot? There 'is nothing unusual, nothing aristocratic about art, because art is life itself. If it is not a live thing it has failed to be art. Think of' the works of art in music, painting, and sculpture that have lived on down through the ages, and will continue to live on and on. A great man once said, "That all …

Recent Contributions In Child Study, Irene M. Yorke
Bachelors’ Theses
Thia is a children’s age. During the last five years the child welfare movement has become outstanding in America. Hundreds of books and magazine articles, both scientific and popular, have been written on child study. The four books in this thesis add distinctive contributions to the literature of child welfare. "The Child in America” by William I. and Dorothy Swaine Thomas is a survey of the entire child study movement. "The Growth of the Mind" by Kurt Koffka is an introduction to child psychology and the new "configuration" theory. "Psychological Care of Infant and Child" by John B. Watson is …

The Unit Method Of Teaching General Science In High Schools, M. Maxentia
The Unit Method Of Teaching General Science In High Schools, M. Maxentia
Bachelors’ Theses
During the past quarter of a century, while the demand for teaching science in high schools was increasing, there has been a constant experimentation going on. This experimentation was carried on, not only by the heads of the science and educational departments of our colleges and universities, the superintendents, and principals of high schools, but also by the teachers themselves. It has been a question of what to teach in general science and how to teach it so that the pupil would get the best knowledge of the subject and acquire the ability of proper application of this knowledge in …

Cooperation Between The Home And The School In The Matter Of Hygiene Of Children, Theodore C. Klett
Cooperation Between The Home And The School In The Matter Of Hygiene Of Children, Theodore C. Klett
Bachelors’ Theses
In attempting to improve the health habits of the child, little can be accomplished without the interest and cooperation of the home, in which the habits will be practiced. The establishment of an intimate understanding between the school and home goes far towards producing the desired results; and, again, while we may be making. progress by the mere preaching of the gospel of hygiene to the child, the child cannot reform his own ways and revolutionize family traditions without the cooperation of the parents. Important from every point ·of view has been the taking of the parents into the confidence …
The Nervous Child, Miriam Wolfson
The Nervous Child, Miriam Wolfson
Bachelors’ Theses
Nervousness is not, as it is commonly thought, a disease of the nerves from the physical point of view. It is rather a functional disorder affecting the patient as a whole, especially mentally. Nervousness may be described as an excessive activity of the nervous system, resulting in a peculiar type of response to the ordinary stimuli of life and showing itself in such symptoms as over activity, temper, irritability or restlessness.
