The Value Of Play In Education, Helen F. Madden

Bachelors’ Theses

The aim of this thesis is to show that play is a necessary part of a system of education,. It aims to show that the training of play is so fundamental, so necessary, and so educative that the child, as Froebel suggests, cannot grow to the full measure of his manhood without it, and that a deep seated love of play is not something that has to be opposed and suppressed, but rather encouraged and developed.

The Development Of Study Habits In The Junior High School, Selma L. Wolters May 1932

The Development Of Study Habits In The Junior High School, Selma L. Wolters

Bachelors’ Theses

The aim of this thesis is to show how definite study habits may be developed in the Junior High School. With children coming from many outlying schools, different nationalities and correspondingly different environments and study methods, it is imperative that at the beginning of the school year, one makes a brief survey of the entire group, seeing what has been done, the difficulties which are to be removed and how best to deal with various students who do not seem to have the necessary background for the establishment of sound study habits. Many books and numerous chapters have been written …

Our foremost educators in their most recent statements of educational principles and objectives, are quite seriously placing health as the first and fundamental objective of education. Fundamental Needs Of The Preschool Child, Kathryn Mccabe Jacks Jan 1932

Fundamental Needs Of The Preschool Child, Kathryn Mccabe Jacks

Bachelors’ Theses

The greatest gift life can yield is its own propagation. The greatest loss one can sustain is the deprivation of that life. These two facts have prompted me to make the present study . I have lost my -precious possession - a beautiful little girl. My loss has convinced me that nothing should be left undone in the promotion of the welfare of the child. A better understanding of the preschool child will enable us to guide him so that he may attain the greatest good at all times. To discover the basic needs of the child is, therefore, the …

The Gifted, Julia Bell Archambault Aug 1931

The Gifted, Julia Bell Archambault

Bachelors’ Theses

The aim of the writer in this thesis is to show how the bright child has been neglected, and the evil that results therefrom; and to show that is is he who is to be our future leader; therefore, it is our duty to plan specially for the gifted, whereby he may make the most of his innate capacities.

The Household Budget, Inez Pepin Jul 1931

The Household Budget, Inez Pepin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics in 1931, examines the household budget as a system for managing family income during a period of national economic crisis. Pepin opens by surveying contemporary economic theories offered to explain the ongoing depression, including overproduction, unequal distribution, and capitalization theories, before turning to the household as a unit affected by broader economic conditions.

The thesis defines the budget as one stage within a larger financial organization process encompassing planning, record-keeping, and periodic review, and argues that no fixed formula for …

The Care, Rehabilitation, And Education Of Crippled Children, Florence I. Payne Jul 1931

The Care, Rehabilitation, And Education Of Crippled Children, Florence I. Payne

Bachelors’ Theses

Cripples have always lived among people, but it took the life of Homer Allen with those of several friends to arouse his father, Edgar F. Alien, to the realization of the problem of the cripple. Today "Daddy" Allen is known the world over as the one who influenced others to show more than mere pity for crippled children that they might have facilities for care and education.

The disastrous collision of cars at Elyria, Ohio, May 31, 1907, and the horrible catastrophe of the loss of a beloved son seemed a divine intercession to the wealthy father of the deceased …

The High School Can Guide The Adolescent Girl In Her Choice Of A Vocation, Amanda J. Barsness Jul 1931

The High School Can Guide The Adolescent Girl In Her Choice Of A Vocation, Amanda J. Barsness

Bachelors’ Theses

A half century ago, high school girl graduates were not numerous enough to constitute a major problem to the community. Besides, it was taken for granted that a girl's career was to be that of homemaking. Today the picture is different. There has been an increase of over 500% in the number of girls who graduate from high school and the American girl has developed interests in many fields. Women of to-day are called upon to help solve· political, social, economic and educational problems as never before. The tendency now is for a girl to choose a career outside the …

Stimulants, H. Earl Rath May 1931

Stimulants, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

The state law requires the teaching of the effects of narcotics and stimulants. Most teachers would be glad to comply with the law if they were certain that they could present reliable information. The difficulty in the past has been that most of this information available was merely propaganda and not based on scientific fact. The tobacco companies have always been able to secure statements from people of prominence who were tobacco users to the effect that tobacco not only did them no harm but actually proved of value. Their statements were not based on scientific evidence, and many of …

The Value Of Music In The Elementary Grades, Anna M. Fox May 1931

The Value Of Music In The Elementary Grades, Anna M. Fox

Bachelors’ Theses

Why do same people smile and look blank at the mention of the study of art? Why do they look at art teachers as though they were in a class by themselves, as though they must be a queer lot? There 'is nothing unusual, nothing aristocratic about art, because art is life itself. If it is not a live thing it has failed to be art. Think of' the works of art in music, painting, and sculpture that have lived on down through the ages, and will continue to live on and on. A great man once said, "That all …
