Determining Techniques And Alternatives For Pupil Recruitment For Enrollment In The Head Start Program, Nancy Vanzant Apr 1983

Determining Techniques And Alternatives For Pupil Recruitment For Enrollment In The Head Start Program, Nancy Vanzant

Theses

This report examines strategies for improving recruitment and enrollment in Head Start programs serving low-income families in St. Louis. Head Start is a federally funded initiative designed to provide early childhood education, health services, and family support to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Despite the program’s benefits, many eligible families remain unenrolled, highlighting a persistent gap between available resources and community participation.

The study identifies multiple barriers to enrollment, including limited awareness of Head Start, transportation difficulties, and misconceptions about eligibility. Families often perceive Head Start as a program for others rather than as an opportunity for their own children, while …

The Implementation Of Human Reproductive Programs Following Pa 226 Of 1977 In Michigan K-12 Public School Districts, Jerry L. Hilton Apr 1983

The Implementation Of Human Reproductive Programs Following Pa 226 Of 1977 In Michigan K-12 Public School Districts, Jerry L. Hilton

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree to which the Michigan K-12 Public School Districts have chosen to implement Public Act 226 of 1977. This statute from the Michigan Legislature deals with the topic of sex education in the public schools. The review of literature resulted in four hypotheses based upon the setting, size, basic instructional expenditures and the location of the district within the state. A research instrument was mailed to all 529 public school districts and had an 87% return rate with good representation from the entire state. For this study the state of Michigan …

A Behavioral Approach In The Treatment Of Hypertension: Exercise Therapy And Relaxation Training, Sheila Wang Kessenich

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate behavioral approaches to the control of hypertension and to provide practical guidelines for setting up such a behavioral program.

Five hypertensive subjects underwent a program consisting of one hour exercise and relaxation sessions, three times per week for 8 weeks. Changes in pretreatment and post treatment blood pressure readings and anti-hypertensive medications were recorded.

Possible mechanisms relating exercise and relaxation to blood pressure control were discussed.

Eating Behavior Of Obese And Nonobese Retarded Adults, Robert A. Fox, Jennifer E. Burkhart, Anthony F. Rotatori Mar 1983

Eating Behavior Of Obese And Nonobese Retarded Adults, Robert A. Fox, Jennifer E. Burkhart, Anthony F. Rotatori

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

An obese group and a nonobese group of moderately mentally retarded adults were identified through use of body weight and tricep skinfold thickness measures. Subjects were observed individually in a sheltered workshop cafeteria during their normal lunch period. A variety of eating behavior measures
were obtained. Results indicated that the obese retarded subjects did not differ from their nonobese peers in eating rate, total meal time, or caloric intake. Large variability was observed in the measures for both groups. Implications of these data for behavioral treatments of obesity and the need for alternative explanations of an obese condition were discussed.

Seven Variables Influencing Life Satisfaction Of The Aged, Pamela A. Galbraith Jan 1983

Seven Variables Influencing Life Satisfaction Of The Aged, Pamela A. Galbraith

Graduate Research Papers

This paper deals with the topic of life satisfaction of the aged, a rapidly growing segment of the population of the United States. The aged are persons found in many groups which constitute our society--racial, economic, education, geographic, political, and sexual. Persons who are considered aged are those who are sixty-five years of age or older. The age of sixty-five can be considered an arbitrary point, since a person does not suddenly become aged. Some persons of sixty-five years are retired, others are not; some may be healthy and active, while others are sickly and inactive; some may be involved, …

A Review Of The Literature On Stress And The School Administrator, Judy Green

Graduate Research Papers

One of the most common maladies facing American society today is that of stress and its concomitant physiological and psychological effects. Too often it is actually the work environment that fosters a great deal of this tension and anxiety. Researchers estimate that half of all working people are unhappy with their careers, and that as many as 90 percent may be spending much of their time and energy at jobs that do not help them get any closer to their 'goals in life' (Hunt, 1983, p. 38).

Collecting Reptiles And Amphibians For Classroom Use, Donald J. Perschau Jan 1983

Collecting Reptiles And Amphibians For Classroom Use, Donald J. Perschau

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The advantages of living organisms in the classroom are well known to biology and elementary teachers. Live animals and plants spark interest, provide color and movement, can be used as teaching materials, and can generally improve the classroom environment. Organisms commonly found in classrooms include plants from the genera Coleus, Dracena, Philodendron, and many others, and animals which are often small mammals or perhaps tropical fish. Seldom does one find more primitive vascular or non-vascular plants, invertebrate animals, reptiles or amphibians. It has been my experience that these organisms have much to add to the classroom and …

Average Heat Of Combustion And Available Energy Of Carbohydrate, Fat And Protein, H. I. Feinstein

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The food energy of carbohydrate, fat and protein recorded in many nutrition tables is the net available energy. It is equal to 16.7, 37.7, and 16.7 kilojoules per gram respectively. These are not the same as the heat of combustion determined calorimetrically.

Spinach

Ever wonder why spinach is supposed to be so good for you? Popeye will tell you it's the presence of healthy quantities of iron. But did you know that every gram of spinach also contains manganese, strontium, zinc, uranium and europium - in fact, at least 27 trace elements?

The Nuclear Arms Race And The Science Curriculum, James Cottingham

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This paper proposes some ideas about the appropriateness and value of the study of nuclear weapons in the school curriculum in general and the science curriculum in particular. I will discuss some ideas that have been tried in this area by me and by others as well as some proposals that could be tried in the future. In addition, I will reflect on things we should be doing as science teachers in regard to nuclear weapons issues.

G83-655 Management Of Early Weaned Calves, Paul Q. Guyer Jan 1983

G83-655 Management Of Early Weaned Calves, Paul Q. Guyer

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses the benefits and disadvantages of weaning beef calves early, including rations and methods for both drylot and pasture-grain feeding programs.

Early weaning of beef calves is a management practice that should be considered under situations such as fall calving, drylot cow-calf production and drought. In areas where forage quality is very poor in late summer and early fall, early weaning might also be considered as a regular practice. Early weaning can enhance the efficiency of drylot cow-calf operations by allowing greater use of poor quality roughages by the cow herd.

Employee Fitness Programs: A Study Of The Benefits For Corporate Industry, Jeanne Carlson Duffy Jan 1983

Employee Fitness Programs: A Study Of The Benefits For Corporate Industry, Jeanne Carlson Duffy

Graduate Research Papers

Historically great amounts of energy have been channeled into the education of minds to perform with maximum effort and efficiency. Often these energy expenditures concentrated on singular cognitive processes in order to develop the intellect, and, in doing so, neglected other parts of the whole self. As the concept of the whole or total self became more accepted, educational programs expanded to include a wider variety of curricula: humanities, arts, career education, psychological education, and physical education as well as the traditional "3 r's". Perhaps because of American society's emphasis on graduation (regardless of level) as an end (rather than …
