Burnout And The Reading Teacher, James C. Sadler, James W. Cunningham Jul 1983

Burnout And The Reading Teacher, James C. Sadler, James W. Cunningham

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

It's the end of the school day on Friday and most of the teachers are congregating in the lounge and classrooms, happily anticipating the weekend. Carole, however, walks straight to the parking lot without pausing to speak to colleagues as she did in former years. Today she informed the principal that she would not be renewing her contract as a remedial reading teacher and, although saddened by her decision, she also feels relief that months of increasing frustration and self-doubt have reached a conclusion.

Part of the tragedy of this hypothetical but all too familiar example of Carole is her …

A Syllabus For First Grade Teachers: Introducing Reading As A Functional Skill Through Food-Related Activities And Food Preparation, Tonia Carlene Mckenzie

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of the project was two-fold. First, it was developed to teach first grade children the importance of learning to read as a functional necessity. The second purpose was to develop methods of doing this while simultaneously reinforcing several beginning reading and comprehension skills in a motivational way. Both purposes are addressed in a syllabus for first grade teachers that outlines how to use food-related experiences to supplement a beginning reading program.

Appropriate Classification Of Obesity In Mentally Retarded Adults, Robert A. Fox, Robert Fox, Jennifer E. Burkhart, Anthony F. Rotatori Jul 1983

Appropriate Classification Of Obesity In Mentally Retarded Adults, Robert A. Fox, Robert Fox, Jennifer E. Burkhart, Anthony F. Rotatori

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Triceps skinfold thickness and body weight measures were obtained for 44 female and 40 male mentally retarded adults participating in a sheltered workshop setting. Subiects' relative weights and skinfold thicknesses were found to correlate reasonably well for females and males, rs = .88 and .59, respectively. Use of only height and weight tables for determining the presence of obesity, however, resulted in 22.5 percent of the males and 13 .7 percent of the females being misclassified as nonobese. The distinction between overweight and obesity was discussed. Clinical/research implications of the findings were delineated.

A Proposed Study Of The Value Of An Exercise And Nutrition Program For Obese Children In A Public School Setting, Barbara Mcdougal

Theses

This proposed study addresses the question: Will a daily exercise and nutrition program help increase the level of fitness for children determined to be obese?

A plan of classifying students as being obese is included as well as a recommended program of exercise and nutrition. The program consists of student participation for 24 weeks for 30 minutes daily in addition to their regular physical education class.

Obese students would be divided into two groups. One group would continue their normal daily schedule and the second group would participate in the exercise and nutrition program.

Time Of Food Intake And Its Effect On Physical Performance, Timothy Martin Windemuth May 1983

Time Of Food Intake And Its Effect On Physical Performance, Timothy Martin Windemuth

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Problem:

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of length of time of eating prior to exercise on physical performance. The literature review seems to suggest that through the years there has been some disagreement on the effects of time of food intake on subsequent performance. Times from one-half hour to four hours have been suggested as the ideal time for a pre-event meal to be ingested to have the greatest positive effect on athletic performance.

Statement of the Problem:

The problem was to evaluate the effects of time of food intake on physical performance. When …
