Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
Education abroad is held up as a high-impact practice with the potential to engage college and university students in a transformative learning experience (Kuh, 2008). The Institute for International Education (IIE) reports that 347,099 U.S. students received academic credit for study abroad during the 2018-2019 academic school year (IIE). Extensive research into student learning gains abroad have demonstrated that developing student metacognition, or one’s ability to be intentionally self-reflective, is central to transformative learning in the study abroad experience (Vande Berg et al., 2012; Zull, 2012). Consequently, international educators are continually searching for pedagogies (praxis) to facilitate metacognitive learning within …

Can Nutrition Education Reduce Division Iii Female Athlete's Risk Of Developing Low Energy Availability, Coby Stover
Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
Context: Low Energy availability (LEA) is widely acknowledged as a state in which an individual does not have sufficient energy to support normal functions within the body after energy has been expended through exercise. In sports environments, athletes can exhibit LEA for a variety of reasons. These reasons range from improper food intake to effectively fuel and re-fuel their body for the energy demands of their specific sport, to eating disorders (ED) and eating disorder behaviors. Access to appropriate nutrition knowledge is also a major factor that can place athletes at risk for developing LEA. Both males and females …

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The purpose of this dissertation study was to examine the associations between student-teacher closeness, student-teacher conflict, and educational outcomes (i.e., academic, social, and behavioral outcomes) for students with elevated symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Positive student-teacher relationship quality is linked to educational success and has been found to be inversely related to adverse outcomes in the general population. Previous research has examined differences in student-teacher relationship quality for students with ADHD, but the association between student-teacher relationship quality and educational outcomes is not well understood for students with ADHD. This dissertation study examined the association between student-teacher relationship quality and …

Strengthening Parental Involvement, Danielle M. Castaneda
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Parental involvement has been empirically shown to improve assessment growth over the years throughout a teacher’s career. Research has revealed foundational pillars, Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model and Epstein’s six types of parental involvement, that are used to encourage parents to understand the importance of parental involvement. Barriers to consistency have been identified as having differing attitudes based on culture and climate, discrepancies in school leadership related to policies and programs, effective communication among teachers and parents, and advocation in early childhood parental involvement. Three components are linked to implementing an operational plan that addresses and overcomes these barriers. This school improvement …

Creating Outdoor Learning Opportunities For Neurodiverse Students: An Outdoor Learning Curriculum For Neurodiverse Students, Erin Barnes
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This project aimed to answer the question, how can special education teachers provide outdoor learning opportunities for neurodiverse students? The benefits of outdoor learning are well-researched and documented. Spending time in nature reduces stress levels and positively impacts mental health. However, many neurodiverse students in special education settings have limited access to outdoor learning due to concerns about safety, accessibility, and lack of training in environmental education for special education teachers. The need for access to outdoor learning is especially true for students in more restrictive special education settings. This project addresses barriers by providing outdoor learning opportunities that are …
