Political Correctness--Correct?, Paul H. Boase
Political Correctness--Correct?, Paul H. Boase
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article provides information on political correctness (PC). PC, as an expression, began years ago as something of a joke to describe communists who slavishly toed the party line. In the eyes of the right-wing anti-PC forces, this modern crusade toward multiculturalism sprang from the machinations of the 1968 campus radicals.

A Survey Of Communication Department Curriculum In Four-Year Colleges And Universities, June H. Smith, Patricia H. Turner
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article presents a survey of communication department curriculum in four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. Excellent communication skills are tantamount to success in education. A review of current education journals reveals the variety of communication skills needed by professional educators, including interpersonal communication, small group meetings, interviewing, basic communication theory, research methodology, teaching methods in speech communication, public speaking, performance of literature, media, and a teaching internship. Social science literature reveals several communication needs for social science practitioners, including anthropologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, sociologists, lawyers, journalists, advertising practitioners, political scientists, human relations practitioners, and mass media personnel. Those communication …
A Multi-Disciplinary Approach To Cultural Learning Through Cable Television, John F. Dillon, Sheila C. Crifasi
A Multi-Disciplinary Approach To Cultural Learning Through Cable Television, John F. Dillon, Sheila C. Crifasi
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article examines a multi-disciplinary approach to cultural learning through cable television. In the U.S., television current affairs programming is now being used in place of conventional textbooks in those subject areas dealing with rapidly unfolding world developments, such as history and political science. While it may take years to revise a traditional textbook, college educators are relying on the quickness of television--as well as print mass media--to help their students comprehend dynamic global events. In 1989, recognizing their own potential as an educational resource, major cable companies and programmers created Cable in the Classroom to help K-to-12th grade educators …

Attitudes, Motivations And Expectations Of Students And Instructors In An Intensive University Esl Summer Session, Ronald Andrew Ragsdale
Dissertations and Theses
All international students have specific motivations and expectations when learning English as a Second Language (ESL) in the United States, and recognizing the diversity of those motivations and expectations is the first step toward providing successful second language instruction. This study was designed to elicit the attitudes, expectations and motivations of two unique groups of students studying in the same classes in an ESL summer session at Portland State University (PSU), the preconception of the instructors, and the impressions and evaluations of the program upon its completion by the students, instructors, coordinators and administrators.

A Meeting Of Cultures: Faculty And Part-Time Doctoral Students In An Edd Program, Paul R. Smith
A Meeting Of Cultures: Faculty And Part-Time Doctoral Students In An Edd Program, Paul R. Smith
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to examine the cultural perspectives of the part-time doctoral students in educational administration and of selected faculty in the college of education at a medium sized middle western university. More specifically, the intent was to determine what types of cultures existed within these groups, the factors contributing to the development of these cultures, and what affect these factors had on the Ed.D. degree itself. A qualitative research approach was taken and included individual interviews, classroom observations, and university documents. Non-participant observations included five doctoral classes and related formal and informal conversations. The data gathering …

A Qualitative View Of The Educational Experiences Of Black African Students At Brigham Young University, Khumbulani Desmond Mdletshe
A Qualitative View Of The Educational Experiences Of Black African Students At Brigham Young University, Khumbulani Desmond Mdletshe
Student Works
Black African students first began enrolling at Brigham Young University (BYU) in the mid 1960's. Most were from Nigeria and Ghana, having been sent by their governments to receive a higher education. In the late 1970's, students from other Black African countries began enrolling at BYU. But in the 1980's, government support was not as strong. As one former BYU graduate student from Nigeria put it: "When I first came here in 1980 there were at least 30 Nigerian students. There were so many of them because the government was sponsoring them. Now the numbers have decreased because the government …
An Analysis Of Student Math Scores Based Upon Teacher Training In The Instructional Theory Into Practice Model, Martha O'Kray
An Analysis Of Student Math Scores Based Upon Teacher Training In The Instructional Theory Into Practice Model, Martha O'Kray
Dissertations
The main purpose of this study was to determine if teacher participation in Instructional Theory Into Practice (ITIP , Hunter, 1978) training resulted in any difference in student achievement. Student outcomes were measured by scores received on the district's Exit Level Mathematics Test (Roseville Community Schools, 1986).
The study took place in Roseville Community Schools. Six hundred forty-nine students and 32 teachers in Grades 3, 4, and 5 participated.
Fourteen teacher observations were included to confirm the appropriateness and frequency of ITIP strategies in classroom instruction. Observers using the Instructional S kills Observation Instrument (ISOI, Wolfe, 1984) scored non-ITIP-trained teachers …

How Can We Use What We Know About Questioning Skills To Develop Literate Thinkers?, Bonnie B. Thomas
How Can We Use What We Know About Questioning Skills To Develop Literate Thinkers?, Bonnie B. Thomas
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
As the critical thinking movement has developed and corresponding research has been reported, a wide body of knowledge has developed around the skill of questioning as a means of developing critical thinking. Effective teachers from Socrates to the present day have sought to do more than transmit facts to students. Teachers have tried to help students develop skills in problem-solving, analyzing, evaluating and interpreting information. A typical teacher does this by asking hundreds of questions on a given day. The prevalence of this type of teaching has been found in reviews of research on teachers' questions which include studies going …

Critical Literacy And Postcolonial Praxis: A Freirian Perspective, Peter Mclaren
Critical Literacy And Postcolonial Praxis: A Freirian Perspective, Peter Mclaren
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"This essay examines the relationship among language, experience, and historical agency. It does so in the context of recent work in critical literacy and critical pedagogy. My discussion takes its bearings from the work of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, described in a recent interview with Carlos Alberto Torres as "the prime 'animateur' for pedagogical innovation and change in the second half of this century" (12). In part this essay stands as a poststructuralist and postcolonialist rereading of Freire that, while to a certain extent "reinventing" his work in light of perspectives selectively culled from contemporary social theory, attempts to remain …
