Sexist Portrayals Of Women In Daytime Television, Angela Sommars Jan 1993

Sexist Portrayals Of Women In Daytime Television, Angela Sommars

Graduate Research Papers

Television is one of the main socializing forces in our culture today. It can mold opinions and attitudes and it can also help to change them. The portrayal of women on television in programs and commercials is still very negative in 1992. Although many people believe women have a more positive image on television today, many of these appearances are deceiving. Television's resistance of the influence of the Women's Liberation Movement is very evident in its continued stereotypes of women in subservient positions to men. Stereotypes of women are shown by the overwhelming majority of female roles in programs, commercials, …

The Effects Of Phonics In Reading And Writing Programs For Young Children, Marjorie L. Tindall Jan 1993

The Effects Of Phonics In Reading And Writing Programs For Young Children, Marjorie L. Tindall

Graduate Research Papers

Phonics is being taught in many kindergartens and .most first grades in the nation to introduce children to reading and writing. A large number of educators believe that phonics instruction is necessary for children to learn to read and to spell, but many psycholinguists question the value of this instruction (M. Manning, G. Manning, & C. Kamii, 1988). The teaching of phonics has been a source of controversy since Rudolf Flesch's (1955) book, Why Johnny Can't Read. Chall (1967) addressed the debate in her book, Learning to Read: The Great Debate, concluding that a code-emphasis approach produced better reading achievement …

Picture Storybooks For Speech Communications Curriculum And Extracurricular Activities: An Annotated Bibliography, Del Brink Jan 1993

Picture Storybooks For Speech Communications Curriculum And Extracurricular Activities: An Annotated Bibliography, Del Brink

Graduate Research Papers

High school speech instructors frequently use picture storybooks in their curriculum. Picture storybooks differ from illustrated storybooks and picture books because they are the only type of the three that includes a balanced union between text and illustrations. An observation made at a high school speech contest in Iowa was the impetus for the formation of a bibliography of picture storybooks suitable for speech contest work. The researcher located, read, annotated, and categorized books reviewed in The Horn Book Magazine between 1989 and 1992. Of the 497 books read, 363 formed a bibliography of picture storybooks divided among these categories: …

Historical Fiction In The Study Of The American Indian Culture, Kay Lynne Bisinger Jan 1993

Historical Fiction In The Study Of The American Indian Culture, Kay Lynne Bisinger

Graduate Research Papers

In planning school instructional programs, educators need to consider the cultural diversity in the United States. Children need to become attuned to diversity and at the same time discover the universals that all people share. One means of doing this is through literature experiences that nurture children's awareness and appreciation of different cultures. In selecting multicultural literature for the classroom, teachers need to make informed choices. Portrayals of any culture require sensitivity, accuracy, and positive imagery (Bishop, 1987).

An Exploration Of Peer Modeling On Behavior, Language, And Cognition Of Autistic Children In Early Childhood Education, Diana Pritts

Graduate Research Papers

Autism is a developmental disability that for years was closeted as a mysterious ailment that was not often researched, understood or even discussed. When the federal Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 (Public Law 94-142) was passed, parents, professionals, and even the public started to look for answers to questions about autism that had been left unanswered for years. This law stated that all handicapped children were to be placed in the least restrictive environment.

Manipulatives: Are They Necessary For Middle Level Learners?, Connie Bruns Jan 1993

Manipulatives: Are They Necessary For Middle Level Learners?, Connie Bruns

Graduate Research Papers

Educational leaders continually search for ways to improve the quality of learning for that special group of students we call middle level. Middle schools have worked to establish a unique program for making the transition from elementary to high school for young adolescents between the ages of ten and fifteen. Students at this age often make firm decisions about how and whether to continue their study of mathematics. Nowhere is the teaching of mathematics more challenging than during these years of transition (Leitzel, 1991 ).

Play And Literacy Development: The Role Of The Teacher And Classroom Design, Lisa Kay Schmidt Jan 1993

Play And Literacy Development: The Role Of The Teacher And Classroom Design, Lisa Kay Schmidt

Graduate Research Papers

During the past decade, research has flourished on play and its relationship to children's learning and development (Bergen, 1987). When focusing on preschool age children, play has been seen as a leading influence on their development (Vygotsky, 1991). Recently researchers have begun to link play with literacy development (Hall, 1991). To understand play and literacy better, both terms will need to be carefully defined and their development examined.

A Study Of The Benefits Of Reflection By Journal Writing In Mathematical Learning And Attitudes In The Primary School, Sally Edmonds

Theses : Honours

This descriptive study examines journal writing for the purpose of identifying aspects of children's mathematical reflective ability. It was hypothesised that encouragement to engage with the process of mathematics by reflective writing would reveal and assist learning, and give children a vehicle through which they could express their attitudes about the mathematics they were learning. The aim of this study was to find answers to the following question: How does the keeping of a mathematical journal reveal children's understandings of the mathematics they are learning? Other questions related to the study were: -What evidence is there from the journals about …

Drama Education: A Teaching Strategy For Young Children Affected By Attention Deficit-Hyperactive Disorder, Janice C. Miller Jan 1993

Drama Education: A Teaching Strategy For Young Children Affected By Attention Deficit-Hyperactive Disorder, Janice C. Miller

Graduate Research Papers

According to many experts, Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) represents the most common developmental problem in school children (Coleman & Levine, 1988; Goodyear & Hynd 1992; Henker & Whalen, 1989). Children diagnosed with ADHD share a group of symptoms including: impulsiveness, inappropriate attention span, distractibility, and in some cases, hyperactivity (American Psychiatriatric Association [APA], 1987). Problems associated with ADHD result in chronic academic and social failure (Parker, 1990). This study is a concerted effort to help parents and teachers understand the difficulties children affected by ADHD experience and to present a strategy that will help the ADHD affected child achieve success.

A Study Of Time Orientation, Temporal Integration And Reading Comprehension: Back To The Future, Tacey L. Ruffner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Problem. Lower-track high school students' combination of poor reading comprehension, present time orientation and shortened temporal integration is an area that has been identified in a range of divergent literature, but little studied in terms of educational practice. Previous research into time orientation and temporal integration has failed to investigate a connection with reading comprehension. Purpose. The purpose was to determine if there is a relationship between time orientation, temporal integration, reading achievement/high school track level and reading comprehension. Procedures. Two measures, a Time Orientation Questionnaire and a Cloze Test of Reading Comprehension, previously identified and pilot tested, were employed. …

Identifying Language Learners At Risk: Pre-Primary Into Year 1, Deidre Jordan Jan 1993

Identifying Language Learners At Risk: Pre-Primary Into Year 1, Deidre Jordan

Theses : Honours

Some children in schools in Western Australia may be at risk of developing learning or behavioural difficulties because they have a difficulty in language learning which is uncomplicated by any other obvious cause. Local research by Zubrick (1984) has revealed that, even at the Pre-primary and Year 1 level, such children are perceived to be less academically able than their peers. In an effort to improve identification rates for these children, Zubrick (1984) interviewed parents of children referred for speech therapy, and parents of children not referred for speech therapy, to determine the extent to which they felt that some …

The Use Of Creative Drama As An Observation-Based Strategy For Identification Of Gifted Preschool Children, Barbara Heitzman Jan 1993

The Use Of Creative Drama As An Observation-Based Strategy For Identification Of Gifted Preschool Children, Barbara Heitzman

Graduate Research Papers

Many scholars of gifted education have stated that early placement of children in gifted programs would provide opportunities for maximum development of potential and for nurturance of positive self concepts. Early identification and placement are also strongly suggested to help prevent underachievement (Karnes, 1988; Kitano, 1985a; and Van Tassel-Baska, 1988). Despite these needs, Karnes (1983) described very young gifted children as disadvantaged and underserved. More recently, the needs of young gifted children have become the subject of much discussion in the literature, and many educators have begun to address how to identify and serve this population (Karnes & Johnson, 1991 …

This paper demonstrates how teacher educators can empower preservice teachers to develop a rationale for honoring diversity in their classrooms by building upon an awareness of learning style preference; cooperative learning; and multicultural nonsexist education. A human relations course at the University of Northern Iowa that is taught concurrently with the student teaching experience demonstrates how student teachers become involved in collaborative relationships with their peers by sharing weekly seminars; planning presentations; doing action research; and engaging in classroom instruction. The model involves personalization of concepts through experiential learning in which group building and team teaching are key strategies. Learning …

Whole Language: A Delivery System For Facilitating Literacy Behaviors In Kindergarten, Carol Feddern Jan 1993

Whole Language: A Delivery System For Facilitating Literacy Behaviors In Kindergarten, Carol Feddern

Graduate Research Papers

The move to all-day every-day kindergarten programs has given rise to concerns about the nature of developmentally appropriate curricula and instruction in these programs. It is feared by some early childhood specialists that all-day every-day kindergarten classrooms will become, and are becoming, inundated with paper and pencil worksheets which are dictated by academic skill curricula. In addition, it has been determined that children are entering school with a substantial understanding of reading and writing which has created a call for an examination of the literacy experiences being offered to kindergarten children (Schickendanz, 1986; Strickland, 1990). As a result, kindergarten programs …
