Concepts in Animal Parasitology
Chapter 69 in Concepts in Animal Parasitology, S. L. Gardner and S. A. Gardner, editors. 2024. Zea Books, Lincoln, Nebraska, United States
Introduction
Parasitism, in this chapter, is defined as “a close association of two organisms, in which one—the parasite—depends on the other—the host—deriving some benefit from it. The benefit is often food” (Rohde, 2005b). Many bacteria, viruses, and fungi are parasitic but usually not studied by parasitologists sensu stricto; they are the domain of microbiologists. Parasites as defined here do not always harm their host; the border between so-called genuine parasites and other symbionts such as commensals is often …

A Thematic Analysis Of Health Literacy And Education Disparities Regarding Medical Needs For Transgender Individuals, Rachel Mcmullen
A Thematic Analysis Of Health Literacy And Education Disparities Regarding Medical Needs For Transgender Individuals, Rachel Mcmullen
All ETDs from UAB
Transgender individuals experience many challenges within the healthcare system including discrimination, socioeconomic struggles, financial strains, a lack of educated healthcare providers, and a health system framework that makes it even more challenging for them to receive their medical needs (Korpaisarn and Safer). One contributing factor to this lack of education is that on average medical schools in the United States only spend approximately five hours total on the health needs related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals (Miller et al.). Another contributing factor is the stigma around LGBTQ individuals within the medical community. The stigma is concerning …

The Intersection Of Health And Education: How School-Based Health Centers Address Health Disparities To Promote Learning, Sophie A. Koloski
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Through a review of studies and literature, this thesis examines the role of school-based health centers (SBHCs) in addressing disparities in health and education among student populations. By integrating public health services within educational settings, SBHCs aim to enhance both student well-being and academic achievement. This comprehensive review explores the history, services, and funding models of SBHCs, alongside their impact on physical and mental health, school connectedness, and academic outcomes. Findings reveal that SBHCs significantly improve access to preventive and intervention-based health care, reduce barriers to education, and foster environments that support student engagement and success. Furthermore, the review discusses …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
‘Mooditj' known as ‘good' or ‘solid knowledge’ in Noongar language based in Western Australian, is an impact evaluated sexuality education program developed in 2002 by Sexual Health Quarters after an extensive consultation process with WA First Nations populations. The program uses interactive activities designed to educate 11–14–year–old First Nations youth about sexual health, life and relationship skills. In conjunction with local and Indigenous leaders within hilltribe communities, Borderless Friendship Foundation (BFF) and Borderless Friendship WA (BFWA) adapted the Mooditj training program to a hilltribe youth audience. Hilltribe people are the Indigenous culture of Thailand, typically living in remote villages that …
Training Underrepresented Minority Students For Careers In Public Health Leadership – Public Health Leaders Fellowship Program, Jigsa Tola
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Background: Shortage and lack of diversity in the United States public health workforce is well documented and remains a challenge to meaningfully improving the health of the population. Although the diversity of the public health workforce has implications for access, care quality, and career opportunities in low-income communities, there is no strong mechanism by which minorities are trained to replenish the workforce. Morehouse College’s Public Health Leaders Fellowship Program (MC-PHLFP) is a cooperative program with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to train undergraduate students for careers in public health leadership.
Purpose: The purpose of this research is …
Black Teachers, Black Students, And Cultural Brokering: Leveraging Positionality To Strengthen Academic Identity, Shakasha L. Stevenson
Black Teachers, Black Students, And Cultural Brokering: Leveraging Positionality To Strengthen Academic Identity, Shakasha L. Stevenson
Theses and Dissertations
This study utilized a phenomenological photovoice approach to understand the lived experiences of veteran Black high school teachers. Black teachers are positioned to serve as cultural brokers to support the academic identity of Black students. The prevalence of symbolic violence in the Eurocentric curriculum and other curricular practices continues to hinder successful outcomes for Black students. The study leverages the experiences of Black teachers to understand how their positionalities influence their decision-making and pedagogical practices.
The literature review explored research on the social and political implications of Black education, Black identity development, cultural brokering, and academic identity. More specifically, the …

Online learning planning presents unique challenges that aspiring teachers must prepare for. This study aims to identify potential teachers' perspectives on designing technology-based instruction. Competency dimensions were created based on the findings of focused group discussions (FGD) with teachers and lecturers, which resulted in aspects of social networking, managing digital identity, filtering, creating content, and reusing. Following the FGD, indicators of nine dimensions"”pre-learning, opening planning, material mastery, learning models, learning resources, student involvement, assessment of processes and results, interaction mastery, and closing learning"”were created. Samples were taken through simple random sampling of 250 prospective teachers in education study programs at …

The development of highly advanced technology has changed the pattern of people's lives in fulfilling information needs. All forms of information obtained will spread very quickly and even difficult to control. We cannot avoid that currently people from all walks of life are increasingly "lulled" by the sophistication of technology such as cellphones to smartphones which are of course equipped with various applications that make it easier for users. However, this convenience is not accompanied by control from various parties, causing a negative impact commonly called Cyberbullying. This paper describes how cyberbullying cases affect school-age children so that the participation …

The Indonesian government has declared Covid-19 a pandemic, leading to restrictions such as working from home and room capacity limits. These restrictions have resulted in numerous layoffs, and the pandemic has been deemed a national disaster, with laws and regulations like Presidential Decree No. 12 of 2020 strengthening the reasons for entrepreneurs to consider it a force majeure event. The economic sector's decline has direct implications for employees, both in formal and informal sectors, due to decreased production, depletion of industrial raw materials, weakening of the Rupiah against the Dollar, decline in Indonesian tourism, and the fall of the composite …

Enhancing Dissemination At Medical Conferences: A Cross-Disciplinary Approach For Learners, Raquel Lamarche, Jasmine R. Marcelin
Graduate Medical Education Research Journal
Empowering novice authors, particularly trainees and learners, this perspective piece integrates a cross-disciplinary approach to bolster scholarly dissemination at medical conferences. Through a tripartite methodology — Innovate, Implement, and Influence — the article first delves into innovation, offering four essential heuristics sourced from diverse fields, guiding the germination of ideas.
